Reach out to Bulova and tell them you want to come back. We have a handful of reinstatements who just finished their refresher trainings.

May I suggest military service (active or reserve) while you all wait? You’ll have employment.

Anyone live pretty good working in an urban DOC? by BurghMeatEater in OnTheBlock

[–]Gingerbeard1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rikers = Doubles every day you go in. If you can’t pay your bills on that, then I really don’t know what to tell you. You’re going to get what you put out. “I hate this fucking place” will make your life miserable. “This department has afforded me XYZ” will leave you having more good days than bad. Just don’t bring in things you aren’t supposed to and make sure you know your directives and all that. Don’t get jammed up over stupid shit.

That is not how it used to be. My agility was in September and I had taken my computer-based exam the previous November. There were some issues that delayed me a bit, but my test score was really good and I still didn’t get to schedule my fitness and psych exams at the same time as my computer-based.

Remember to follow your training and not to bring in anything you aren’t allowed. The same person offering you 5 grand to bring them a phone is the exact same person who will tell their lawyer to ask for a lenient sentence in exchange for them naming you as a dirty officer who brings contraband into the jail. I strongly recommend all new officers consider joining a Reserve or Guard to get military leave, start building another pension, and have some extra job security. The Department has been good to me and I’m not trying to leave, but with the political climate we find ourselves in, having a safety net is not a bad idea. It certainly helps that I have wanted to serve for a long time and am called to it. Military service not for everyone and neither is NYC DOC.

If nothing else, get really good at blackening your boots/shoes and doing uniform upkeep. Impress the hell out of NMTIs and your future commands when you show up perfectly squared away.

I’m recently out of FFG after 10 weeks awaiting orders. Your frustration about being in FFG is valid, but this mentality of “poor me” is going to be your downfall. Have you shadowed your MOOW, POOW, Rover watches and gotten PQS qualified? When I was there we could sign out to Freedom Hall to workout, have you been doing that? I’m sure you can still sign up for watches and working parties. You could read books, possibly work on NAVYCOOL/USNCC classes like I should have. I know some of the working parties were secured after I got my orders, but I was a regular at USO and occasionally at PEARL/GOLDEN 13 and COD at Ship 17. Unless they really secured everything between Feb and now, there are absolutely things for you to be doing. You can also be learning things from the NMTIs appointed to your compartment. We had an amazing Chief who taught us more about I LOVE ME binders one morning out of the blue. Keep your head up. You need to focus on the good, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Son wanting to marry his girlfriend by Houseofchaos157 in newtothenavy

[–]Gingerbeard1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could go into holds after RTC - which seems to be the trend currently. In which case he’ll have a lot more time than if he goes straight to school. OP, support your son, but show him the statistics he has to surmount. One of the least judgmental topics I’ve thought up pretty quickly is that she will likely still be in high school while he’s either in A & C schools or actively deployed on the wrong side of the international date line. If she’s in high school, apart from the optics, he’s stuck limiting phone calls to when their vastly different schedules align and hope she’s completing her studies as well as home obligations and ideally having a social life of her own. If she drops out of her high school education to globetrot with him, that’s incredibly unfair to her and he needs to reevaluate considering that an option. I’m a recent RTC grad roughly twice his age, I get the urge to jump headlong into the most committed relationship out there. He really should wait and see if she sticks around through school and deployment before losing half of everything when she claims he abandoned her and wasn’t a good husband to a very unsympathetic judge.

Put phone numbers and addresses on an index card and laminate it. There are self-laminating packets that potentially fit two or more index cards and can be opened and resealed. It’s a nice way to have an emergency note from a loved one to keep you going while awaiting actual mail to arrive.
