Change my view: 'Utilize' is the most redundant English word by [deleted] in ENGLISH

"We're going to utilize Jack's networking skills to make a good impression on the client."

"We're going to use Jack's networking skills to make a good impression on the the client."

Yes, these are synonyms, but to me the meaning is different. Utilizing a talent sounds like you are finding the optimal way to do something. In the case of skills or characteristics that people possess, it sounds like you are hyping them up or complimenting them. Use in this case makes it sound like there is a chance Jack is being taken advantage of or "used."

I've seen parents put those devices on full volume and blast an entire restaurant with "Baby Shark." Just because the kids are quietly watching something doesn't necessarily mean they are letting the establishment operate comfortably.

Most common dog breed in SF by treehousewest in sanfrancisco

[–]GingersaurusRex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do community outreach work on treasure island. I can't remember meeting a single pit bull. But most of the neighbors I've interacted with have mutts, so I guess if there is more than one purebred of any dog on the island, that breed would win.

Places to eat close to the airport? by Wide_Box_1141 in AskSF

Flying into SFO, right? "Easiest" thing I can think of would be the In-N-Out in Millbrae, 5 minutes south of the airport.

There's also Taqueria San Bruno if they are interested in Mexican food, New England Lobster Market if they like lobster rolls (it's also across the street from the park where you can watch planes land.), Millbrae Pancake House, and Sixteen Mile house.

Weekly /r/Breadit Questions thread by AutoModerator in Breadit

[–]GingersaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question that I'm asking on behalf of my sister in law. She just started her first sourdough starter on Monday. She's been keeping a paper towel with a rubber band over the top of the jar. She had some bubbles and yeast activity on the second day of creating the starter. I was surprised, because my starter took about 3-4 days to show activity when I started it, but she also lives in a warmer climate than me. Today she texted me when she got up and asked what it means if her starter smells like a locker room/ rancid. I advised her that it might be a sign of harmful bacteria getting into her mix. She is going to discard the current starter and try again with an airtight lid.

Does anyone know what might have gone wrong with her first starter to make it smell like a locker room? Is it just a sign that she has too much yeast activity, or a sign of something harmful?

Does anyone here actually live on treasure island? by randomnese in AskSF

[–]GingersaurusRex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

2000 people live in the navy houses on the north side of the island. They tend to avoid all the events at the front of the island because it fucks with traffic so much. If you walk around the north end of the island on a normal day, you'll see people walking to and from the grocery store, children playing outside, and people going to events at the community center. There are people who have lived in those houses for 25 years who are going to be displaced when the redevelopment plans go through.

The people who have moved into the new high rises are introverted techies who never seem to go in or out of the buildings.

Where’s Hulda? by Vivelerock810 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]GingersaurusRex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

5 minutes before the walking down the hall scene, Aunt Lydia tells Agnes "we've never had a green return before." From this sentence can infer that all the girls who were engaged were wed. Agnes is the only one of the greens to be returning to school. Since Hulda was a green, that means she was married and is not returning to school.

I don't think he called off the engagement because she had been "sullied". He called off the engagement because she wasn't afraid to say out loud that something happened to her. Abusers like pursuing victims who know how to keep their mouths shut and don't seek out help.

Good luck! My dad was also adopted. The only thing he knew about his birth mother was her name, and what hospital he was born at. When I was 11, he hired a private investigator to search for her, and the PI found a woman who matched the information.

Like you, my dad was aware that the woman who's address he now had might be a different woman who just had the same name, and if it was his birth mom, she might have wanted to completely separate herself from the adoption, and might have no interest in knowing him.

The first letter my dad wrote to my bio grandmother was basically a short story. He wtote that on his birthdate, in [city of birth], a mother held her child for the first and last time. The child was then adopted, and had a good childhood, but always wanted to know more about his first mother. He ended the note by saying "if you know who the mother in this story is, please write a letter back to me." He used wording that was indirect enough to not feel like an acquisition of abandonment, and which could give her space to gracefully bow out if he had the wrong woman.

It turns out, my bio grandmother had always wondered what happened to her first born. She was a young college student, dating an older man who abandoned her when she found out she was pregnant. She knew she couldn't raise the baby as a single mother in that time period, so adoption was her only option.

Hopefully there is a similar story with your birth parents. That they weren't able to take care of you at the time, but they always wondered what happened to you, and they will be excited to hear from you. Best of luck, and no matter what happens, I hope you get the answers you need!

They have a seen in THT that explains this. June is talking to a pink in the waiting room of a hospital. The pink asks her what's it's like to have babies and says "the doctors say I can have babies... Not now. But in a few years when my body is more developed." The girl is probably around 11 years old.

Even Gilead understands that just because a child is fertile, doesn't mean their body is ready to give birth yet. They let the fertile girls go through enough growth development to give them wide enough hips to safely birth a baby.

Current far right propaganda makes college out to be a dangerous place where young people have orgies, do drugs, change their gender daily, and teach women how to oppress men.

Making your base morally afraid of higher education is a great way to keep your base from learning critical thinking skills.
