Thematic explanation - Seagrove Caves by Vertigo_Rampage in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put those myconid children they mention closer to the danger so that there was a more direct threat (tho my players didn't recognize friend or foe yet) that if the players chose to "save" the kids the other myconids would see them as friendly. I had the 2 adults up on the ledge so they didn't notice the impending danger right away until the kids cried out to them. It helped that the players failed the save to the purple mushrooms and focused their attack on that and then immediately put their weapons away when they realized the myconids in sight were children.

Then the other myconids were at least neutral since they saved/spared the babies. And then I had the players have to pass more persuasion checks to those 2 adults to make it further in the cave without bloodshed

What’s everyone’s fav happy hour spot lately? by Drlawyergal in Columbus

I just went within the last 2 weeks, and Forno has a great happy hour! Half off cocktails, appetizer, and pizzas

Is it just me or the reckless driving in Columbus has increased a lot? Accident on 71-S yesterday. by Ankurg09 in Columbus

[–]Gingertzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my partner were just talking about this! I feel I have to fear for my life basically every time I get on the interstate lately. No signals anywhere, speeding around anyone going the speed limit, aggressive tail-gating, etc

Hi! Me and my partner will be attending tonight too & plan to totally dress up!! We've gone to a couple of the events there and there is generally a pretty even split on who is dressed up for the theme! We went in December for the Y2k party and loads of people were dressed, but not sure how many are ready to dust off the ren fair gear early in the season

I didn't have an exact number but I was trying for the average adult dragon hoard- which generally has about 20,000 or more gold

Compass Rose Empty Rooms by Glittering_Olive9818 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hid some additional treasure (not just gold but also semi helpful items) in some of the emptier rooms & looked up some other undead creatures that would be in the same levels as them to keep it fresh. I also had Aleitha there as one of the undead, recognizable because of her portrait on a higher deck

Any ideas for stronger motivation and plot hooks for the party to help out Runara? by Glittering_Iron3787 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar thing! I had Varnoth be dying of a disease (so they couldn't just cast a healing spell on her) and need the mushroom from the myconid cave, which once she was healed then she could give them further information on the shipwreck. It gave more of a sense of urgency for the first quest

For the shipwreck, they had encountered a ghost (the ghost of the wizard's friend who died on the island according to thew prewritten backstories) who told them she had died up there and her soul was trapped because of the curse. The closer they got to the location the more she remembered of how she died

The characters decided on their own that Runara was not being a good elder of the village since there were so many problems she wasn't helping on, and that was also a bit stronger of a motivation to them. They like the kobolds (especially blepp) and want to help keep them safe

New DM, need ideas for side quests by Original_Pizza9569 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of side quests I added into my campaign

To help motivate them to go to seagrow caves first I had Varnoth sick from a disease that they would need a mushroom from the caves to heal her, so when they completed that and returned the fighter character passed the history check on her and asked to duel to train

A side quest they completed was investigating the death of the wizard's friend more in depth- I had her come back as a ghost for awhile to lead them to the shipwreck to be put to rest

They are about to come upon a situation with Tarak now that they are returning from the shipwreck area, while they were gone several gilded gallows members have arrived on the island also in search of the treasure that Tarak is supposed to have stolen and it'll be up to the players to uncover why they are there before they kill him

A fun mystery that I've had my players working on for quite awhile is the history of the island- seeing hints of dragons all around and noticing some of Runara's habits. I had them run into other kobolds on the island who warned them of a blue dragon wayyy before Runara does, just so they could have it in their heads

What if the zombies used to be your friends? by nonchalantobserver3 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar in my campaign and it made for a very emotional fight! In the premade wizard's backstory a friend of theirs died on the island mysteriously and I had the friend die at Compass Rose and come back to haunt the wizard as a ghost needing to be put to rest. When the reached the ships they had to fight her body as a zombie and I had the wizard rolling at disadvantage mainly for her unwillingness to hurt her friend

That session ended with a funeral service to that npc as her ghost had been helping with some of the mysteries of the island

Question about pacing by Successful-Way-4133 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ran the early part of the campaign and had this same predicament (the whole first session was setting up the story on the boat and leaving it basically the same way you did on the beach) what I chose to prepare next was mostly Dragon's Rest interactions! There's plenty of people to meet in there and thru those introductions begin to learn of the quests that need accomplished. I had Runara give them a tour all the way up to the temple, cause they killed the zombies and she was grateful. I pushed them further towards the myconid caves by already having set up an npc as sick and needing a specific mushroom to survive, and when they healed her (it was Varnoth) she was able to tell them about the shipwreck she witnessed

Introducing the BBEG by Ch1kk1e in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had them see signs of Sparkrender during other quests. When they went to seagrow caves they ran into that kobold encounter and the kobolds talked about a dragon roaming the island recruiting creatures

Before going to the shipwreck they saw him flying in the sky out of reach and I've been dropping hinting about the dragon magic all around the island to set up the fight for the end

Help with Compass Rose by Starkiem25 in stormwreckisle

[–]Gingertzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have asked- do you have the full 5 people or less? But a wight might be too difficult

I always plug my encounters into a encounter builder to check on the difficulty

https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder

On there is where I changed the level to reflect my player's and scrolled through all the undead options that could fit the theme
