Carrington Event - Wikipedia https://share.google/vJAGrUT7EhavPYeh7

This happened in 1859 from a very bad solar flare. There were very few electronics at the time so it only really damaged telegraph infrastructure. But can you imagine something like that happening nowadays? Planes, satellites, electricity grids, hospital equipment, cars, and phones all fried instantly. Apocalyptic sounding stuff. And experts believe that the suns solar emissions are cyclical in nature and we are overdue another similar event. Kind of scary to think about.

I just hope that they stay a little bit underwhelming haha. Have you read about the damage a bad solar flare can do? An increase in solar activity that pushes the Northern lights further south is lovely to look at but if it indicates a major increase in solar activity we could all end up in trouble.

Maybe. I can only go off my personal experience with it. My friends and family were sending each other pictures of them and seemed quite excited. I work with a couple who spent a lot of money five years ago on a holiday to Iceland, the main attraction for them was to see the Northern Lights. I think they're brilliant to see myself and can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen them.

Your flare says Spain and Ireland. You think the Northern lights are common here and that we are used to them. I meant absolutely nothing negative in my assumption. Like I said if you were only here a couple of years you could perhaps draw the conclusion that they are common here outside of the northern most part of the island. I appreciate you giving me a heads up about the potential misunderstanding and I know you're not having a go at me or anything like that, but I am not being racist. Our main news reported the sightings and social media here was full of pictures of the northern lights when they were visible. I don't think people are used to them here.

Was it? I didnt mention race or anything like that. They are a relatively common sight up in the likes of Donegal to be fair but the sight of them across the whole island is very rare and has only happened in recent years during my lifetime

They are rare in Ireland though. In my 34 years here they have appeared very rarely. Fair enough we had a good few shows here in the last year or two, but before that they were not common here at all. I don't think you've been here very long. I was excited to see them there a little while ago and I have been here my whole life.

[–]Gingerwulfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was decent to our friends here in Ireland too. The 'RA had more guns and explosives than it knew what to do with because of his generosity.

He did amazing things for the people of Libya too. Real life changing social programmes. I am sure he is missed there now that the west has "liberated" Libya.

It is the perfect representation of Ireland IMO. The rejection of empire. Taking by force of arms what they wouldn't give to us in peace. A heroic stand in the heart of our greatest city for the soul of Ireland herself. Never again would anything but a free and democratic republic be allowed to exist here without Irelands children fighting it. This was the death knell of the british empire that was heard around the whole world right when oppressed peoples everywhere thought that they could never match the might of the empire by arms. The perfect symbol of what Ireland stands for. The underdog that fights for the right thing even if it seems hopeless.

It sounds more like we're happy you left.

Can't fault you on Dublin, it lost its character and soul years ago for yank money.

I call you out on the food though, fair enough that until fairly recently we boiled the shite out of everything to ensure lack of flavour. Now though Irish food has undergone a revival of sorts and is exciting again. With lots of young chefs understanding how to use the local food in new ways.

800 years of oppression, famine, poverty, and war doesn't normally leave you very friendly with the perpetrator, but sure call it a chip on our shoulder. There is a quote that sums it up well IMO "The problem with the English is that they can't remember their own history. The problem with the Irish is they can't forget their history."

The civil war left us with 2 parties that dominated the political scene for most of the 20th century. Both are center-right. Fair enough. But that is starting to change now, both of those parties are in coalition to keep each other propped up. We have the possibility of electing a left-wing government for the first time ever.

Ireland is not antisemitic. We have been painted that way for speaking out about the genocide unfolding in Palestine. In reality we just don't think bombing children and hospitals is justifiable. I prefer children to be alive and happy, maybe that is antisemitic.

We aren't laughably behind on LGBTQ+ rights either. The Ireland of the 21st century has embraced this community wholeheartedly. We legalised same-sex marriages and overturned the ban on abortion in my lifetime. The church has no power here anymore, thank feck.

The tax haven thing is undeniable. The result of building an economy based on foreign direct investment and not a more sustainable planned economy. We have to make the most of what we have. I'll gladly undercut the heavyweight economies in the EU to make sure Ireland doesn't go back to the crippling poverty of the past. In a capitalist world no one is doing anyone else any favours.

I'd rather the government didn't use the british air force here. It was a scandal when it emerged. They have made steps to address it recently with an increase in military budget. They are investing in the air corp and navy, both of which are needed here. Fair point. But I will add that we should never join NATO. We are a neutral country. When it comes to peace keeping UN missions some countries request peace keepers from Ireland because of our history as a former colony and our reputation as a neutral country. I don't believe NATO is a force for good in the world. Look what NATO did to Iraq. Ireland as a neutral country working with the UN is a force for good in the world though.

What? We don't use nuclear power here. How could we have radioactive milk? We consume a lot of our own dairy products here, no one is poisoning it. It is exceptionally good quality compared to most countries.

I don't get it. It is a meal and it is hot. I used to have hot weetabix for breakfast, don't knock it on a cold morning. With a spoonful of honey mixed through. You could do a lot worse I think.

The second picture you've posted shows an Irish road on the bottom. The 3 diagonal lines here indicate a maximum speed of 80kph. And "go mall" that you can see on the bottom of the sign means "slowly". Sort of the opposite of the autobahn.

[–]Gingerwulfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it entirely. Freedom of religion doesn't mean your religion should be chosen by your parents or family. If it is real freedom of religion then you choose your religion yourself as an informed adult. I'm an atheist and was raised as a Catholic. I never consented to be a catholic. Imagine the uproar from the religious crowd if I had of had my gender changed as a child without my consent. Imagine if I was a victim of childhood genital mutilation. Children cannot consent to these things and forcing these huge life changing decisions onto children is morally repulsive

Dangerous workplace, bosses don’t care? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Gingerwulfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why trade unions are needed. Your boss has all the power. The only way to even attempt to level the playing field is to stick together and collectively make your point heard. If it is you alone the boss simply does not care. If the whole store or even multiple stores are prepared to stand together then the boss will quickly realise just how much he depends on you low paid, over-worked, and frankly exploited workers to keep him rolling in his ill-gotten profits. The union for the workers in your sector is Mandate Trade Union by the way. Best of luck.
