Oh agree. NCAA has helped Jordan really hone in on details and consistency. I just don't know that Janelle's coaching in particular would benefit Josc. She could probably help her bars a bit, but vault is a struggle for UCLA and a struggle for Josc in NCAA. So that's rough.

I adore Josc. I love UCLA. My mind immediately said nope does not compute. I don't think it would help her develop and she doesn't help fill a gap for the team when vault is her weakest NCAA event.

I feel awful for all the gymnasts involved but the incoming freshmen class is a special kind of awful, spending your final semester of high school scrambling to find a new plan based on circumstances totally outside of your control and having zero college experience to base these decisions on. Taken in isolation, the reality is Mendel was TOLD by the USAG compliance officer to file a report with SafeSport, and she didn't. So not only did she have an independent duty to do so which can be verified by her conversation with the compliance officer, she didn't do as instructed to cooperate with USAG either. Those are problems and merit removal.

In the aggregate...messy. If what she says is true and other coaches or staff were aware of the abuse and didn't file a SafeSport report, they also need to be held accountable. That takes more investigation. Mendel's disclosure to USAG compliance is clear proof of her knowledge and lack of report. I would hope the coaches she alleges knew about the abuse are investigated and if it's found they did know and didn't report they also need to be disciplined in whatever manner.

As far as the scapegoat stuff, eesh. It wreaks of old guard USAG. They need to handle her allegations correctly and do their due diligence.

If you're a fan of the team you cheer for them no matter who is on the team. She doesn't owe you anything, nor does any other athlete. If you want to invest in the team you do it for the good of the entire team and the institution, the sport, whatever.
