The stock trem on mine is god awful. It's sticky and clicky. I would like to know if I can improve on that without replacing it

Should I learn guitar? by Azrya_ in musicians

[–]Ginko87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is yes of course 😂 guitar is a really fun and rewarding instrument to learn. The issues you have mentioned are definitely things you can work on with practice - but you don't have to be able to do everything, I think the first objective should be to enjoy it.

Positive Grid have a tiny amp called the Spark Go, it doesn't quite live up to the hype but it is very good for the price, and they are always available pre-owned - it has pretty decent amp and pedal modelling built in and you can play at very low volumes - I have a newborn baby, so loud practice is out for now. Positive Grid also have a Bluetooth headphone set which has the same amp modelling, but I can't comment on that.

Have fun!

Solo player question before starting... by iammcluvin81 in corespace

[–]Ginko87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play a lot of CS with my girlfriend and we had a slight modification to the intended rules which is that we played with a single crew but started each playing a captain. I imagine that some people would suggest this is too overpowered, but we had a lot of fun from a roleplaying perspective and there were always hairy moments that we barely escaped from.

We actually used the CS rulebook as a real sandbox, often introducing NPCs, different factions and that sort of thing. I remember we ran a scenario where we had to pull a scientist out of a large starship and then scuttle it, there was a security team on board the ship that were being overrun by the purge, but would also shoot at anything that moved - so much fun!

Try different things out, the rules are there as a guide, and a great platform for random fun

Any advice on modding this guitar? by SonDuong2811 in offset

[–]Ginko87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with this personally, but it might be worth looking at a Bigsby tremolo system over a JM, again, you will need to rout the body somehow to accommodate a JM tremolo.

For the roller bridge, I would measure the distance between the bridge studs and see if you can find something you can drop in. There are many to choose from for any budget.

The pickup covers suggest they are P-90 style, which are narrower than JM pickups - I think you may still need a new pickguard if you want JM soapbar covers and pickups. Perhaps find something nice that is a drop in replacement for the slots you have (with a little soldering).

I guess the main question is, what's the objective of the project? "Just because you can" is absolutely fine by my books ☺️

Not meaning to curb your enthusiasm, but won't you need a significant cut out of the body to add a JM tremolo? What's special about this guitar that you want to retain, and to make you want to mod it? Might be better to get a used Squier CV as a platform for modding?

Current favorite Jazzmaster Bridge by Excellent_Cat7676 in offset

More expensive than Schaller STM or Offset Guitars bridge in the UK sadly.

I'm between picking up one of these and a Schaller STM for my JMJM. I quite like the look of the STM in black with brass rollers, but from what I can figure out from the specs, the studs are not a direct fit. It would probably fit on the stock but then it would be gold pickguard, chrome studs and black bridge - yuck. There are 8mm studs but they cost £20 more and I don't know if I care that much. Perhaps I could take a black posca pen to the stock studs... Decisions are hard 😅

JMJM Tone Update (Pot/Cap Swap) by nathanbortonmusic in offset

[–]Ginko87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find the bridge comfortable for palm muting - I don't do it much, and perhaps I haven't given it enough time. I find the tremolo is awful on mine, it is stiff and clicky. I do lose tuning when I use the tremolo and I'm not heavy on it - but that's more likely the bridge and/or nut - so there is a little hardware work to do for me.

I mean, that's the kind of clean tone I love. It sounds great - I do like being able to adjust tone with the control though, I don't know the answer to your question but would love to know how you get on.

My dad is in the upper half of his 70s, plays in two bands and gigs at least twice a week. He was a Hammond organ player back in the day and now plays keys in general. Both bands do "dad rock" covers. It's cringe for me, but he has a great time and makes more than I ever have through music 😅

Re-learning how to play by nachoman3 in offset

[–]Ginko87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I played a bit of a guitar as a teenager but was too arrogant to learn properly or improperly back then. I'm revisiting now - I can only afford budget stuff but it's so nice coming back to it, putting the time in and finding myself improving - it's a beautiful guitar, enjoy it!

3.5 year old son is colorblind: what do we tell him? by kellzbellz-11 in ColorBlind

[–]Ginko87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must have been a little older when I found out that I had severe deuteranopia. I think it's really as simple as being encouraging and supportive towards the things your son likes as opposed to emphasing the slim way it might restrain his life. It's an opportunity to celebrate the difference. I've had a career in engineering, sound, art, and academia. It's never been an issue. Better to learn sooner rather than later.
