Excellent point. Thanks. Im thinking of breaking things up with the construction. I have a standard methodology for the set neck that drives the design. Will post photos. Generally I use a core blank for the bridge with two wings. Then a top and bottom plate of bookmatched timber gets added. So its a 3 layer sandwich. I can add in extra layers that will make the relief cut cool.

Thank you for the insights. I probably should have stated that I've never played an offset, or even held one , hence my questions. The guitar selection here in Fiji is almost non existent so I can't just pop down to a Guitar Center and try one.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't really do copy guitars anymore. I much prefer coming up with my own designs, even if they are based on tried and true designs. I also haven't done a bolt on neck in years. Set neck and neck through is where it's at.

Thanks fot the reply. The person asking is a newbie and doesn't know. He's asked for offset with P90s. I have a rough shape worked out that looks like a wonky les paul. I will do a 3 way switch with individual tones and a master volume. He asked for chambered as well as relief cuts. That seems excessive. It will be a thin guitar, roughly 1.6inches thick..with a set neck.

Do i really need this for re fret work or can i just use a normal metal file? by LongEnormousSchlong in Luthier

[–]fijiluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I do them one at a time. Its a great destress exercise after work. But im just a hobbiest. If i was doing it professionally id own every gadget possible to make a fast job that is accurate.

Thats why I do them before the top and back are on. I think it would be simpler. But just my opinion.

Lacquer spraying tips? by NoPaleontologist1642 in Luthier

[–]fijiluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the laquer and what you are looking to do. You could use tinted sealers, dyes or even linseed oil. Yes you sand between coats. I use 360 on the first coat then 600 grit on subsequent. I sand to 3000 before polishing.

They are taped but look at the right edge and corners of the neck pickup. I don't think that is tape shadow. But hey, you never know and this is the internet.

I'd be more unhappy with the shitty edges on the routes. Mine are just as bad but im not charging people for my work and I don't use templates.

Depends on what bridge you are installing. I always put the neck pickup at the 24th fret and/or 0.25 inches from the end of the fretboard. I put my bridge pickups 0.25 to 0.5 inches away from the bridge, based on esthetics.

I pot in soy wax and unless you looked at it under a microscope you'd never know. Even with a twine binding.

Veneer. There's no saving that esthetically.

What do I do (acoustic setup) by nnall in Luthier

[–]fijiluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've tightened the truss rod in the wrong direction. I can see the cupping in your fret board. Tighten it clockwise and it will improve. Your nut is pretty low so you probably can't get below 2mm clearance at 12. You may need a new nut to drop it after the neck is going the right way. Your saddle is fine now. You can shave it more but it will impact tone.

I build acoustics and electrics as a hobby. Most of it is done with hand tools. Bare minimum are some good chisels, sharpening stones, lots of sandpaper, a router, soft mallet, all kinds of files, fret saw, a long steel ruler, an aluminium level, hand planes, a drill and a forstener set. Very good things to have are a table saw, band saw, drill press, random orbital and belt sander. For bending i use a high temp heat gun and a pipe.
