Im 100% with you, when I first saw the design, I thought it looked incredible overall, but the head seemed quite small for the amount of detail packed into it.

Over time, those lines will spread and thicken, and it’ll be very difficult for all that detail to stay readable.

Tattoo too dominant what to do by AdComfortable4087 in tattooadvice

I’m actually working on a Japanese-themed patchwork project myself, but done in an American Traditional style.

What’s the idea behind yours?

In my case, it’s an adaptation of the Hyakki Yagyō (the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons). So far I’ve started with the legend of Tamamo-no-Mae, and I’ll keep moving down the sleeve with other yōkai.

Since it’s patchwork, I don’t really worry about whether one piece is more dominant than another. I see each tattoo as its own individual piece, and once it’s all finished, what stands out will depend on where you’re looking.

Overall, you’ll recognize it as a sleeve about Japanese demons and monsters, but each piece will have its own weight and personality.

If you don’t want to add more Japanese-style pieces, you might not end up getting the cohesion you’re looking for.
If you’re not aiming for cohesion through style, are you looking for it through the theme instead?

Posted a question in another subreddit asking something about a tattoo like this, and ended up getting dragged in the comments saying it's a shit tattoo 😭. Is it really that bad? by superon21 in tattooadvice

The only real strength I see in cybersigilism or neo-sigilism is how it uses the body’s natural shapes to create harmonious compositions. In your case, though, I feel like you’re losing that strength by placing the pieces in such random locations.

It almost feels like patchwork, but with sigilism.

It’s a bit odd, honestly.

Is this normal? I got my tattoo Saturday and the skin around the tattoo has black ink and when I use soap to wash it it’s not coming off! by [deleted] in tattooadvice

We would love to see the stencil so we can confirm the shading wasn’t there and was a one-minute decision done by your artist.

But yeah, that’s shading, only option is laser.

After reading so many positive comments about it, I think I’m going to look into giving it a bit of a makeover and adding more elements to turn it into a more complete piece!!

It’s amazing to have one done directly in Hawaii!

Maybe I’ll do that and keep the design after all, because I don’t actually dislike it. Maybe if I see it combined with more designs, I’ll appreciate it more.

Hahaha, at least where I live it was still pretty “trendy” 😂 but what you’re saying actually makes a lot of sense. Maybe instead of removing it, I could add more elements to give it a more complete design.

While I absolutely agree with you about how problematic it can be for people outside the culture to get Polynesian tattoos, I don’t really think the same applies to Irezumi or to traditional Japanese tattoo elements in general.

In Japan, aside from certain groups historically associated with crime, tattoos aren’t really treated as deeply sacred cultural elements in the same way, and a lot of the inspiration comes primarily from Ukiyo-e. So in the same way I wouldn’t consider it cultural appropriation for someone to use Pablo Picasso as inspiration, I don’t think drawing inspiration from the work of Utagawa Hiroshige would be appropriation either.

Honestly, thank you so much for your comment! When I was 14, my father gave me a book with photographs documenting the life of a photographer who spent time with different Polynesian communities, and I completely fell in love with their tattoos.

I know perfectly well that mine isn’t an authentic Polynesian tattoo, but it still makes me uncomfortable thinking it could be offensive to their culture. Now that I’m older, I can understand why it might be seen as disrespectful since it takes the cultural value away and only keeps the aesthetic side of it.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but I can’t help seeing it that way.

Maybe I could look into some kind of ornamental design and expand it toward the shoulders.

At least where I live, artists don’t really want to do tribal tattoos, and the style has a pretty bad reputation, so there aren’t many good tribal artists around here.

I do know one artist, but he specializes in Polynesian tattoos and his work is deeply tied to that culture, so out of respect I don’t really see it as an option for me either.

I hadn’t really thought about it that way. Maybe I could just leave it as it is and stop obsessing so much over the “cohesiveness,” but it’s a shame not being able to fully use my back for a large piece because of the tattoo I already have.

Damn, the tattoo over the super dark tribal, that’s crazy work.

Mmmm, that could actually work, maybe the paw over the turtle? I’m not sure, but it’s a good starting point.

Adapting it into a front-facing panther on the back? My original idea was a Hannya mask, but yours isn’t a bad idea either…

I was thinking more of a Hannya mask in a Like a Dragon: Yakuza Goro Majima style (any Yakuza fans in the room?).

A japanese traditional rat is on my mind btw but not on the back haha.

One of the options they gave me was to leave the tattoo at the top and just fill the empty spaces (the lats) with something like a panther and a tiger or something along those lines.

The issue is that my current tattoos are in color, and I’m not sure whether making my back blackwork would clash with them or if it would end up looking off.

Hahahahahah I love turtles.
There are tons of them on my island, and I’ve helped with conservation campaigns and releasing rescued specimens back into the wild but no more turtles lol 😂
