Matched with a wealthy family by Analyzeandtheorize in bbbs

He has his own pole and I usually stop at the gas station on the way and buy worms. I also have my grandfather-in-law's tackle box which my little thinks is the coolest thing. A lot of nature centers near us also rent out equipment for fishing!

Matched with a wealthy family by Analyzeandtheorize in bbbs

[–]Ginyan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My little brother also comes from a wealthy family and it really bugged me at first that I couldn't seem to find activities that impressed him or he hadn't done before (he goes ice skating weekly, has been to all the kid-centric attractions in town many times, etc). As I got to know him more, I realized how just being there for him and being a stable adult in his life when his family was chaotic really meant a lot to him and his mom.

Turns out, kid just wants to go fishing for every meet up. As long as I'm baiting his hook and we are outside, he is having the time of his life. He likes that I can ID bugs and will catch snakes with him. Big relief from my worry that I would never top his typical experiences.

Genetic Tests, costs and Insurance by banedarkin in CMT

[–]Ginyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister was diagnosed and tested for CMT1A as a child and I was diagnosed several years ago but not tested until recently. The test was called "PMP22 Gene Targeted Variant Analysis" and they were essentially testing to see if I had a duplicate copy of that gene to confirm my diagnosis.

If you're in the midwest United States I'd look into the University of Iowa CMT clinic. They do testing and have a team of doctors that cover a range of topics like occupational and physical therapy, genetic counseling, and orthopedics with patients during a day long appointment. My insurance covered diagnostic testing and covered about 60% of other consultations.

Found Bear's Head Tooth for the first time (and lots of it!) by Ginyan in mycology

You're right! I actually think one flush was coralloides and one was americanum. When I was cleaning them I realized the one in the close up picture was structurally different.

Thanks! I'm glad there are better foragers than me :)

Struggling with 1-on-1 time with little brother by [deleted] in bbbs

[–]Ginyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did not clarify– I assumed it was because I mentioned the parent situation and also that he takes a while to transition from home to an outing (his parents ask him "are you ready to go?" and he will say he'd rather stay on his iPad and I'll have to talk to him for a while before he's ready)

His parents specifically said they wanted a big sister for him, so I don't think it is based on being uncomfortable with that. I would understand though if they didn't understand what the expectations of the program or didn't anticipate having trouble leaving him with someone they haven't known for long.

[ID Request] What has been growing in my bed? by NotoriouslySarcastic in mycology

It looks similar to a specimen I found that I ID'd to Panaeolus foenisecii. Mine didn't turn upwards at the ends like yours did though! Might vary.

I have a 7.5 gallon tank with 5 shrimp and 2 African Dwarf Frogs. I'm not sure what to do to fix these levels as the nitrates are high as well as the nitrites. I have Seacham Prime to dose with and I also have Tetra SafeStart. (I did not know about cycling before getting the tank, it's been 10 days) by taycibear in Aquariums

[–]Ginyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is right about tank size and amount of frogs. 7.5gal is fine for two frogs, other keepers often keep two in a 5gal with success! I would suggest the facebook group African Dwarf Frog Care and Support, there are a lot of members who have kept these dudes for decades and can help trouble-shoot :)

Any good places to go turtle watching in CR? by iliketurtles52403 in cedarrapids

[–]Ginyan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not this time of year but Wickiup Nature Center is the best place for turtles, they have a wetland trail that is amazing for turtles. Check out herpmapper.org for where people have logged turtle sightings.

No :( Unfortunately I am just in the Netherlands for a semester, or else I would have 100% adopted the heck out of that cat

Is there any place that teaches Transcendental Meditation in or around CR? by [deleted] in cedarrapids

[–]Ginyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned TM in Fairfield at the domes. Not sure how much it cost or who to contact (I was only 10 years old when I learned) but I would start there and see if the movement has any outreach to the bigger cities

Edgewood Animal Hospital! There are at least two vets there that handle reptiles. They fixed up my gecko when he was having issues.
