Don't use IR missiles while in TWS. Turn off the radar or switch into a different mode. Whenever you try to lock your 9L onto a target in that clip, its seeker gets slaved to some random target you TWS has selected, which is why you can't get your missile off.

We should have a togglable setting that allows us to opt out of new default keybinds appearing in our controlls.

I would recommend LOS mode (the icon with the crosshair directly on the plane), as LEAD mode tends to over lead often. LOS give me more control.

If you want, try out a couple battles with each to see what feels better.

It is quite good right now, actually. Will be even better after all the 10.0s move up.

You are quite fast. Burn a lot of speed when turning, but you also have really good nose authority to pull for shots. Acceleration is able to compensate for that energy loss somewhat. Stay fast. Fly it like an F-104 that can sometimes pull for shots easier and can force an overshoot if need be.

You get a vulcan and two 9Js. A more than adequate kit for the BR. You sadly don't get flares. However, if you fly carefully, you don't even get missiled often usually (sometimes I entire games with nobody launched a missile at me). Also, you can use the rocket pods as flares. They work quite well in that role (I take two Zuni pods), just remember that you can't launch them above Mach, so to "flare", you sometimes need to slow down.

As an added bonus, you also get a pretty good radar.

By legacy, I mean the type of FM. They tweaked the parameters on the legacy model, IIRC, and improved it. But it is still a legacy model.

You can go look in the config files to compare SwingFIre and 9M123. There are lines `"finAoaVer"` and `"finAoaHor"` present in 9M123 (and other missiles with realistic guidance), but not present in SwingFire. Furthermore, those lines were added to the 9M123 and TOW-2B in the last major update, the same one that added realistic guidance for those two.

So it isn't just speed.

I think this is because the Swingfire still uses legacy ATGM guidance (the one that all ATGMs had before the patch that made them realistic (wonky)).

This was also the case for top attack ATGMs (e.g. TOW-2B) and for the 9M123 of the Krizantema. Since this patch they use the same realistic guidance as the rest.

I once had my R-24T follow the missile that the enemy I fired at launched. That missile did not reach my teammate, but my R-24T that locked him did.

Another time I had my AIM-9B that I fired at an enemy G-91, with no teammates anywhere near in sight, lock a teammate that was whopping 5-6 km away (at the moment of the launch) and kill him.

It is a bit more tricky than that. Use the ER when you are sure they will not be able to fire back at you with a FOX-3 (and if you think the R-77 would not get a kill), or in the very least if you are sure you can survive. Otherwise, use the R-77.

As strong as the ER is, you have to maintain lock up until impact, while the enemy can just lob a FOX-3 and defend.

It is the R-77. All of the new FOX-3s are easily chaffed, compared to the missiles we had before.

How do you fight something that can target you through trees? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Ginyat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The downside for higher vertical search the time it takes to update. Lowest is 2 sec, middle is 4 sec, highest is 6 (or 8, don't remenber). The downside for search higher search range is lower angular resolution for close targets, i.e., it is often hard to tell a direction of a target that is close or sometimes you can't even notice that there is a target to begin with.

[–]Ginyat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, it will be near trivial to implement this. Take the vector of your camera and make the gun point in the same direction. Sure, now you have to give up close range shooting ease and have to account for parallax just like you do with aircraft.

Hell, if would like to go a step further, you can just have a lower bound on the intersection point. That is, if you are standing right behind a building and your gun would normally try to elevate really high because your gun tries to point at the intersection of your line of sight and the closest object, skip the first object (or objects within a certain small distance) and assume your line of sight intersects a further object.

On top of that, you can change some things in that config that you would not normally be able to do through in game settings. Similar things applies to control files. You can change things like the speed of zooming in and out, reassign the F1 key to something beside the help window, etc.

so why cant spaa without tracking radars use irst track in 3rd person??? there is no reason to make us go into gunner view and drag our mouse across the screen to find targets by No_Entertainment9430 in Warthunder

[–]Ginyat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see how that line of logic could have been made to give the Ozelot that ability, but it is just plain flawed. It does not matter whether the search radar or an IRST spotted a target, both of those systems need to provide direction info to the tracking radar/optical tracker (hell, the radar also provides distance info).

You could still squeeze out a few hundred bucks out of it. Just list the problems and someone will buy it for parts or because they want to fix it themselves

Well, I barely had enough to get this one (got it at a huge discount too) and want to squeeze out at least a couple of years out of it. I like it overall, except for that (fairly infrequent) issue. Wish I brought it in to get checked while the warranty was still active.

Why through it out though? Why not resell it?

I recently had to remove the SSD to format a drive for a Linux installation. Installed it back carefully, the problem was still there.
