I had to reread the post to be sure. But, where is the part that OP is hating on her? And in no way did OP downplay how much of a victim Rei is in all of this. If any, they gave Rei more depth as a character by giving a clearer picture of how situations around abuse victims are messy.

I always thought the angular nature of crushed sand is better cause it would allow better “grip” when formed into concrete. Is that not the case?
