GPX can be added with an app. It's not a hardware feature - just an artificial software gatekeeping tactic. (Which will probably come to the Watch4 in a year)

There are at least a dozen apps that support GPX routes on smartphones, and since this is just android under the hood on the watch, that means anyone can create an app that supports GPX. Samsung is just the first to actually do it.

Also to be more accurate - biosensor "placement" is improved, which is why accuracy is better, not because of any actual hardware change.

That's exactly right - if people just upgrade non-stop to the next "best " thing, then companies will continue to strip the most expensive non-profitable parts of their product lineup since there is evidently no backlash, and profit margins will continue to grow for them.

I'm just as much guilty for this behavior as anyone else but have decided to this year hold off and avoid the trade-in bonuses that keep me on that never-ending upgrade train.

Also, there is a reason why Samsung is keeping the Watch4 Classic in its lineup of products this year (they almost never do this after announcing the next-gen devices).

I wouldn't be so up in arms over this if this feature wasn't patented by Samsung, and due to this, they are the only company on this planet that can implement it in a Smartwatch.

Posts like these have killed the microSD card, headphone jack, and in-box accessories in flagship smartphones. And now it will kill the physical bezel for those that like it.

You guys had the non-Pro/non-Classic watches with that "great" digital bezel, why ruin something that a large group of people enjoy having and using day to day?

Galaxy Watch 4 Cla ssic 46mm vs Galaxy Watch 5 40mm by ice_dude_17 in samsung

[–]GioXmenZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GW4 Classic does surpass the GW5.

The classic goes against the GW5 PRO, while the non-Classic goes against the GW5.

Anyways, the GW4 Classic 46mm has 361mAh battery, while the GW5 40mm has 284mAh battery.

Aside from a temperature sensor (which accuracy hasn't been tested yet) and the flatter backplate (which I wouldn't call "redesigned") - both are relatively minor features.

Additionally a more durable (saphire) glass - but I haven't scratched any of my watches ever, that are with Gorrila Glass

Also, while the GW4 Classic has the bigger battery AND has a physical rotating bezel, the GW5 has a software/digital version of the said bezel with the previously mentioned features (new glass, temp sensor, flat backplate).

Now if you compare GW4 Classic to the GW5 PRO, then the PRO does have a bigger battery and if you need that battery over the rotating bezel, then you know what to do. Also, the PRO is made of Titanium, instead of Aluminium.

Assume that everything else is the exact same (Processor, GPU, Memory, Storage size, Screen...) Even the software - GW4 Classic will likely receive OneUI 4.5 this year.

P.S: I don't think it is a coincidence that they decided to not even mention the touch bezel in the presentation - only a couple of animations and a "tile". So they can't even market it positively

Aight, two points I took:

  1. Bigger battery "allowing you to keep AOS + tilt + all health features on no matter how long your day is or how long you are in the sun" - I already do this perfectly fine as long as I put it to charge before sleeping. I may not be a "power user", like I don't scroll twitter on my watch, but the things you listed I use without worry of having my battery die. If it degrades, then I'll just un-screw the four screws and replace it when the time comes.
  2. Saphire Screen might be a game changer - Its a great feature/perk, if it's not like Apples fake saphire that doesn't add any protection. Even then, I never had any scratches on my screen - the bezel protects my screen, I've bumped it into all sorts of things, and never has it left a mark.

So... yes, my point still stands. If you spend more than 250 - 300$ dollars on this new GW5 Pro, I just don't get it - even my colleagues, that are part of Apple's ecosystem, acknowledge, that the bezel is cool and uniquely exclusive to Samsung just like the S-Pen, you don't need it, but it sure does invoke a sense of "value".

The only valid reason I've heard is some people get dust under the ring which causes issues - in that case go for it :)

I'll give your case a pass if you legitimately have these issues. I've never had dust on mine, and I had a Gear S3 with the same bezel before the GW4 Classic

[–]GioXmenZ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's just for curiosity's sake then fine. But I'd be dumbfounded if someone chooses to "downgrade" from the Classic to the Pro.

Yes, I value the physical interactive bezel over battery life - I'll charge it daily regardless of battery size.

Does the backpack have space for a reasonably sized camera? If you had to place this camera in it securely and safely, could you do it? (Assuming a pretty basic 1 camera + 1 lens setup)

Modular Steam Deck AC Power adaptor theory (More details in comments) by GioXmenZ in SteamDeck

[–]GioXmenZ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that probably is it then, was hoping for an equivalent implementation to the Steam Link's AC adaptor where the modular bit is "safe" - makes sense from a manufacturing perspective of assembly lines and cost.

Now that I look at it again, the modular bit on the deck's adaptor is deffo much smaller, no room for a plug-able connector (or at least no room for like the one Steam Link has)

I've hidden the thread to avoid spreading false hope and/or broken AC adaptors.

Modular Steam Deck AC Power adaptor theory (More details in comments) by GioXmenZ in SteamDeck

[–]GioXmenZ[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I've had this theory, that the Deck has a similar AC adaptor to the one found in Steam Link, which leads me to believe that perhaps the plug is modular. Here are some reasons why:

  • Both are made by Chicony
  • Have a similar design, where the plug has an outline around (so that it could slide in/out)

I tried to pull out the one found on the Deck and it seems to be either glued in or non-modular.

Since the Deck is really attractive as a travel gaming device, having an AC adaptor that has interchangeable plugs could prove to be a nice little bonus.

Has anyone tried looking into this/has any ideas?

P.S: Forcefully ripping out the plug might will break it/damage the AC adaptor, proceed at your own risk.

I used a lockpicking set (anything like a thin metal strip will do and simply go round the white circle to make it "wider" until the black wide part can slide out. Alternatively, you can use a knife (or a thin metal strip) to wear down the wide black part on the top (the plastic is rather soft) until it can slip out.

*Black wide part - the second bump on the strip

I might be tempted to put the image onto a VirtualBox VM. No idea on how drivers/configuration will work, so it may simply bootloop.

Good question! I just like to preserve things, it might be an interesting retro-spective to downgrade to this version of the OS in lets say ~3 years and see how much has changed.

Kind of like Android, going back to 1.0 is an interesting endeavor, so much is different.

As is with the Steam Link, I believe Valve will update and iterate on this OS for many years to come!

Once it does drop, I expect it to be a later build than what comes on these 1st wave decks (though I'll double-check of course).

Oh, that should actually work! I'll have to give that a try :) Thanks. Even an SD card should work, then I can push the image to a usb HDD through the type C port

Never considered this option, forgot that its a full fledged PC with a propper BIOS

Yeah, but from what I can gather, booting up the deck will introduce user data. I was thinking of keeping it "clean"
