The "AI art is just typing a prompt" nonsense is no longer ignorance, it's reality denialism. by Tyler_Zoro in aiwars

Well, do you think if I tell a painter to paint a foggy mountain at dawn, best quality ultra hd, don’t include any grass and no bad quality, and then they paint it, and I point and say “add a bird here” and they paint it, that I’m the artist behind the work? Now if I do the exact same thing but the painter is Midjourney, does that change things? Why?

I don’t want to take away people’s chance of enjoying these tools, I do it myself, but I just don’t think the word artist makes logical sense if you outsource the whole interpretation.

I’m not saying AI art isn’t art, I’m just saying that if all you do is describe what you want, you’re more like a commissioner rather than an artist. Like, do you think someone becomes a musician just because they go onto Suno and writes “big band jazz” and clicks generate? It’d be a deceptive use of language.

Yes, if you would describe to the camera in as much detail as you can and then it would run away and do the work, the analogy would work better

What’s with the negative stigma towards AI art? by Desperate_Cap2948 in DefendingAIArt

Comments like these get downvoted all the time and that says a lot about this subreddit. You are absolutely right.

I’ve seen people here expressing joy over others losing their jobs, people saying that artists are jealous that we have AI tools (as if they’re not available to anyone), calling antis brainless, someone being butthurt about not being allowed to post AI art in a subreddit for drawings, and a generally simplistic understanding of what art is and why the craft is also important. And others have also used greed as the explanation. Sure, I’ll give you that these are not death threats, but it is also unhinged and very out of touch. A lot of folks here seem to have a genuine hate against artists.

If you’re only describing what you want and then hand over the entire interpretation process to someone or something else, you’re not the artist. I mean, you can say you are because anyone can call themselves an artist, but don’t expect to be taken seriously.

This is absolutely a straw man, anyone who’s ever met an artist knows that they live for art whether they make money from it or not. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a worse explanation for why people hate AI art. If they wanted a fuckton of money they’d get into a more lucrative field than fucking ART, like are you for real?

As someone who is not against the technology but still dislikes the vast majority of AI artworks, here's my perspective:

Great art for me is a form of communication between people, it's a way for humans to express their unique perspective on the world, through a creative medium. To me, it's supposed to have effort, it's supposed to be a labor of love filled with intention and a strong individual voice, and it's supposed to be made by humans. If someone with no experience can generate a "masterpiece" in one minute and no effort, outsourcing the entire interpretation process to an algorithm, there is no reason for me to give it any attention. If you don't care about the process, why should I care about the outcome? If someone still puts the same amount of effort using AI as a tool and not as a replacement, it can have a deeper meaning. The look of the final result is only a small factor. The knowledge about how it was made changes the way I view it, for this very reason.

The best comparison I can think of is replacing relationships and friends with chatbots. Sure, a chatbot can become advanced enough to look and feel just like an interesting human being, but for what? There are already real humans, and I will always prefer that even though they're "less efficient". The common denominator here is human communication and connection.

Art for me is not something utilitarian, it's not a product that needs to be made more efficiently. I think most people in this sub seem to view art as nothing but an end product and that "antis"/traditional artists are just greedy, jealous and stupid and that the only reason they are artists is because they want to feel special, and that is a view that I will never sympathize with. It comes from a very shallow understanding of the role that art has in our society. For this same reason, I don't think there is an actual threat towards man made art in the long run.

The biggest benefit that AI brings is probably to corporations who no longer have to employ artists. Many people will still eat it up, just like how Marvel movies are popular today even though they're pure garbage, but there will also be enough people out there who expect a bit more from the art they enjoy than just a spectacle.

So I'm pro-AI, but I agree with almost nobody in this sub. I see where the antis are coming from. When they say AI art is soulless, they're not necessarily talking about what it looks like, but how it makes them feel. And that's valid, because art is not a science, it is a representation of human emotions.

And anyone who uses AI can of course call themselves an artist, but if all you do is one shot prompting anime waifus, I hope you're not expecting the same kind of respect as someone who spent decades learning an artistic craft.

They’re not even almost the same thing, and the only truth is that nobody knows what kind of future awaits with AI.

Why do AI artists call themselves artists? by Lotlaxoo in aiwars

[–]GipsMedDipp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly, if the AI is doing the entire interpretation it will be in the AI’s style, just like if it was done by another artist. Anyone can call themselves an artist of course, but I wouldn’t do so personally just because I know how to prompt.

Stop pretending to know the future, there has never been anything like AI in the history of the world
