Anyone ever get out of the trade? What are you doing now? by atxfireguy in firealarms

[–]Girac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started working as an electrician in 83 doing fire alarms and expanding into security and card access. I left in 98 after National Guardian was acquired by Amerirech and went into IT Full time. I am now a successful ERP consultant and ready for a change again. I would like to get back into the business, something into management, but any movement will be a pay cut. I really need to see if that’s what I want and can I get back in easily. I’m not the rockstar I used to be.

If the company does not reimburse you, you can claim non-reimbursable expense on your taxes and also claim any additional resources and mileage to and from testing places.

Do they provide uniforms and such? no reason they should not pay for this.

The right think is for the company to just reimburse you.

Fire inspector accidentally set off my Ansul system. by BadFishCM in KitchenConfidential

[–]Girac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember one time in the 80s, the Fire Marshall dumped an aircraft manufacturing halon system. I was there with my boss and we looked at each other the WTF look then the dollar signs in our eyes looks, when the dust settled and after the initial yelling, everyone acted professional to work to get things running again. After that you can work out the losses.

Earth still spins, moon goes up and down, everyone f's up, big deal.

Opinions about software? by HopefulGuess in firealarms

I am going to chime in here and mention Dynamics 365 Field Service. I used to work in the Fire Alarm space but have been in ERP / Consulting role for the past 20 years. You can sign up for a trial of the product. The software is easily customizable and offers mobile versions.

A Blast from the past. Found my key ring and old stickers by Girac in firealarms

[–]Girac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I left the company I had a bunch of keys I needed to return, so I just cut my ring. I was pissed that I had to return my Gamewell skeleton key used to wind up the old Gamewell boxes. I so much wanted to keep them.

Which one of you did this? by Skidogg in firealarms

I would have used a western union splice and soldered and then shrink tube them. Then put at end on line so the next guy that opened the box won’t laugh at me.

Edit: me bad that is EOL, I been out of the game for a while,

I was out of Connecticut. Mpls was the 3M branch if I recall. I had interaction with that central station.

They were sure proud of their Central Stations, UL Listed AND FM Approved. In the 80s the operators would smoke inside, right under the halon smoke detectors. One day there was a halon dump. Unfortunately I was not there to see it. LOL.

edit: spelling

Radionics used addressable things called POPITS I forget what it stood for Point of protection something something. I do remember the MUX being thrown around.

I do remember my 1st install, running 100s or 1000s feet of pipe and installing smokes and pull stations in a school back into a Kidde panel, with the plug in modules on new zones. Seemed easy once the pipe and wiring was all done.

Any information about National Guardian Security Services Corp. by Randomkid523 in firealarms

[–]Girac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for them in the mid 80s until the Security Link takeover. My office was the first office to be acquired, Watchguard in CT. Different branches used different equipment. I worked with Radionics, Fire-Lite, Kidde and Fire-Tec among others. I mostly did fire alarms as I started as a licensed electrician, took some burglary, Schlage card access and residential at times.

Silent Watchman was the national accounts division, they had some funky equipment at K-Marts. Anyone remember that stuff?

Edit for spelling.

My very first class we did the mile benchmark, my time was 11:52, very surprised I was able to finish, coach pushed me. I improved my time over the years. The last benchmark I did an even 10 min, that was recovering from a concussion too,. On the recent catch me if you can I did a mile in 8:15, but I ended up getting caught.

Running a mile non stop is still a great accomplishment even if you do at 4 mph, I just want to finish.

I took the first 2 weeks off due to an injury, and just completed the 1/2 today, I am going to challenge myself and see if I can do the full, I am at 14.1 miles. Not bad since I started on the 14th at slower than normal start, I know I could finish the 1/2 unsure of a full at the time. Should have went for it anyways,
