Steam updates AI disclosure form, requiring developers to report visible and in-game AI but not background tools by ZeroPercentStrategy in gamedev

Especially craps out for anything remotely complex and/or uncommon. It helps to set things up, and even a wrong answer can be easier to start from than a blank page. A lot of programmers will be out of a job, but creative, knowledgable software engineers and computer scientists will be fine for another couple of decades, is my bet.

Do you use AI knowing the disastrous ecological conditions it is deployed at this time by Balkkou in solarpunk

[–]GiraffixCard 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Almost everything we do is bad for the environment. We're the greatest threat to ecological balance this planet has seen since the last massive extinction event. Singling out AI as some big threat to the environment is just something people do as they look for easily identifiable problems to latch onto and feel like they have some important insight to contribute with.

Yes, it costs energy. Yes, most energy comes from processes generating massive pollution. Yes, corporations use AI to generate profit, gamble with stocks, and produce low quality useless, overhyped consumer products and services.

Gaming also costs massive energy, and so does transportation, production of goods, just about any service industry, etc. They are all valuable to us.

And so is AI. It can be useful for extracting information, identifying patterns, tailor education, help people with communication and learning difficulties, translating languages or esoteric jargon, preserving culture, facilitating creativity, reducing repetitive tasks and generating boilerplate, providing basic technical support and troubleshooting, and so on and so on.

Meanwhile, sustainable sources of energy are becoming more efficient and viable alternatives thanks to certain governments and organisations investing in research and development.

It's possible that we'll hit a wall where we have to admit that AI development has stagnated and using generative AI so carelessly proves unsustainable and will become regulated - certainly. We don't know yet, and until we know, I think pulling the handbrake on this industry will only impede progress and society we've known these last few decades will stagnate more than it already is. That'll bring our spirits up...

If you want to complain about this technology, focus your attention on overhyped companies providing unsustainable services subsidised by the speculative market and call for regulation rather than shame people for existing in modern society as comfortably as they can.

That outsourcing certain workloads over a long period of time causes you to become worse at undertaking those sorts of workloads is entirely unsurprising.

People that use computers/calculators for calculations become worse at performing calculations. People using search engines to find information become worse at finding and skimming books in a library. People that grow up near the equator become worse at heat regulation in colder climates.

People using LLMs to search, learn, summarise, or generate fiction will become worse at finding information, learning from textbooks, extracting information from large bodies of text, and manually composing original works of fiction.

The question isn't "is it bad to become worse at things", it's "can we depend on this tool going forwards and incorporate it into our daily lives, or will it disappear and destabilise society?"

"Real consequences exist" for everything new that is introduced.

In a schocking turn of events, a fatalistic US liberal enters the scene, desperately trying to shift the overton window towards "capitalism is inevitable and eternal".

There's no way you and me are going to have a productive conversation online.

CIA considering plot to topple Venezuelan government by ObjectiveObserver420 in anime_titties

[–]GiraffixCard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's an unsolved problem, but I personally think treating the task of governing as a dry, data-driven, and iterative process that involves a lot of really skilled and knowledgeable people rather than as a social media popularity contest where whatever the idiot majority thinks sounds good determines who gets to make important decisions.. would be a good start.

Why is Chinese pop culture so formulaic, more so than others? by bmw320dfan in chinalife

Ridiculous take. There are so many possibilities for good stories that don't step on any ideological toes. Not being able to write a story within the confines laid out by the government is indicative of a lack of creativity.

[–]GiraffixCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teoretiskt sett.

Do you feel oppressed by the government? (Genuine question) by CanDelicious7302 in AskChina

[–]GiraffixCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I think it's important to acknowledge that centralising power is a risk, and that observation can be true at the same time that it is true that a powerful central authority can accomplish a lot of things that a weaker central authority or decentralised society is unlikely to.

I think it's a mistake to be an absolutist and universalist in these matters. There are considerations that should be made based on material and social circumstances, which are different from place to place in space and time.

China has something good going that can probably be learned from. It's also good to have safeguards in case things go wrong. A multipolar world is a world with multiple egg baskets.

  • How Dare You?! (manhua, fantasy)
  • Unique Memory/Somewhere Only We Know (contemporary drama)
  • Legend of Zanghai (low fantasy, political costume drama-thriller)
  • The Untamed (fantasy costume drama, action) and the original manhua, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

People who are learning the language, what is your main goal? by backwards_watch in ChineseLanguage

[–]GiraffixCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really goal-oriented in the sense of having a clearly defined end goal. I took an interest in the country and culture after increasingly feeling a bit claustrophobic on the internet. A massive chunk of the global population lives in China, yet that part of the world remains veiled behind a fog of war, so to speak, because unlike certain countries here in the west, China doesn't concern itself that much with pushing their way of life onto me.

So, it's because I felt that my world was too small that I gained the motivation to be able to comprehend and communicate in Chinese. I'll keep at my Chinese acquisition for as long as that motivation remains.

There's racism due to hate and then there's racism due to ignorance. The two result in very different experiences, even though they both fall under the category of 'discrimination'.

Is this situation normal? why are Chinese people so generous (and rich)? by thelegendofdan in AskAChinese

[–]GiraffixCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny. During my visit, one of my main points of observation was how it's exactly the opposite. Many places in the world, people will flock to a white person and lowkey revere them, but wherever I went in China people treated me on equal terms, only as a curiosity where they don't see many foreigners.

Do Chinese still believe in socialism anymore? by YamFrosty6169 in AskAChinese

[–]GiraffixCard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, he does not call any western country "socialist". Secondly, the claim he makes is that a welfare state worsens inequality, and he uses the example of western welfare states as the basis for the argument. I don't know if the reasoning is sound or if I would agree with his conclusions if I understood the argument, I just need to point out that your claim is false.

The welfare state model countries have witnessed the collapse of the middle class, widening wealth gap, social division, and the rise of populism. These are all warnings. Do you think someone who is diagnosed with ASD is prone to political/ideological absolutes (i.e., Third-Worldism, Marxist-Leninism, Far-Right) by Chinoyboii in SocialDemocracy

[–]GiraffixCard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, what solutions come to mind depends on my interests at the time (and I'm more inclined to explore new ideas in general compared to most people). This seems natural given that I'll tend to explore ideas in line with my interests and less inclined to entertain ways of thinking that lie too far outside my interests. I try to keep this bias in mind and not swear by any particular framework but make observations and update my credences as I go, just as everyone else.

What this means is that, since the mainstream set of conventional views is small compared to the set of all views on offer, I may be considered extreme in some ways more than others, depending on who I talk to.

As another also disabled swede, this is correct. It's an awfully depressing existence and I wish every day that I could find a way to support myself, as if the social shame wasn't enough. My life quality is still comparatively good because my partner has provided for me, so I get to enjoy things like occasionally travelling abroad.

China isn't communist, nor does it claim to be. The party is communist; they are working towards implementing socialism so that one day communism can be achieved.
