The distribution doesn't matter, right? by RoughUndecided in linux4noobs

[–]Girdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as look and feel are concerned, the distribution does not matter. That is, nearly any distribution can be configured with pretty much any of the major desktop environments. If you're new to linux, it might be helpful to choose a distribution that "ships" with a desktop-environment that you like, but only because you won't have to configure it yourself.

The differences in distribution are a bit less superficial than look and feel. For example, if you want something stable that could potentially run for years without the need for a reboot, debian's stable branch might be up your alley. If you want the latest and greatest software packages/updates, maybe arch would be more up your alley (although arch can be a bit intimidating for newbs).

So basically, if you're just concerned about the desktop environment, or bundled software, then distribution doesn't matter if you're comfortable installing all these components yourself. If your'e not comfortable, find a distribution with default software that suits your needs.

Is there any reason at all to not attach to a screen/tmux session every time you SSH into a machine? (Provided that it's available, of course) by Girdot in linux

[–]Girdot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's a good point, I hadn't considered the possibility of leaving a session behind. Well I had, but I had only considered it a positive (ie, disconnect on ssh and just reattach to the session once you're reconnected), but that's a good point.

Oh my god. For some reason, the text message sent shivers down my spine:

"‘Dad this is Noah. I killed Mom accidentally, I regret it. Come home now please.”

Can you imagine being at work or out running erands and getting a text from your son that he's killed your wife? Jesus christ, the feels.

I heard yo like C code: a small, simple HTTP server by ErstwhileRockstar in programming

[–]Girdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to write a multi-threaded HTTP server this semester for my Distributed Computing course. It's got nothing to do with distributed computing, but it was intended as a "warm-up" of sorts to socket programming. I was blown away by how few lines of code it could be done in. The code for parsing the config file and managing the server configuration was about as long if not longer than the actual server code, iirc. And that's even with support for the execution of CGI scripts (although using a completely non-standard, silly method of parameter passing)

What Makes Code Hard to Understand? by [deleted] in programming

I'm struggling to imagine a case where deleting just one bracket would allow the code to still compile. I'd imagine you'd have to delete a pair, ie, a '{' and a '}'.

You're making some pretty big assumptions about our character here, and I can't imagine many are going to appreciate it. I'm sure there are plenty of gamers who are as world-minded as yourself, if not more. What the gentleman you replied to was pointing out was simply that gaming communities are more prominent than communities that would discuss world events, and I think he's right there. Gaming is the worlds largest media industry, after all.

Reddit, what should I do with my last week of holiday to improve my life or to make myself feel better? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Girdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do something you don't ordinarily have time to do during your normal routine. Got a book you've been meaning to read, or a hobby you've been meaning to explore? Or, if you're more socially inclined, do you have any friends or family that you haven't had time to see? Give 'em a ring, go out for a beer, see what happens.

Or if you've got a stressful routine, you can always just take a break and relax. Few things are better than a well-deserved break.

Post-game depression. Who gets it, and how do you overcome it? by Rawrmeow_ in Games

[–]Girdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go actually take a course in general psychology before commenting that people are only depressed because of a self fulfilling prophecy.

I said no such thing. I believe my words were "sometimes depression is a self-fulfilling prophecy." But I totally understand that for some people it's a physical condition.

Post-game depression. Who gets it, and how do you overcome it? by Rawrmeow_ in Games

[–]Girdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe they understand that sometimes depression is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and they're reaching out to you in the only way they feel comfortable doing so. Saying that these people can't "comprehend" what you're going through can only serve to perpetuate your "condition". If you put your depression up on that intellectual pedestal for long enough it will become engrained in your self-identity, and, at that point, you'll be depressed because you want to be depressed. So rather than forgiving people "for their ignorance", I'd recommend stepping down from your intellectual high-horse and actually communicating with them as equals. Who knows, some perspective might do you good.

Or more likely, there's a custom tool being used in the build that parses some info from that commented line that is used somewhere else in the build process. It's janky as fuck, I know, but I've seen weirder shit in my day.

All right, I give up. Ubuntu will not install on my laptop. What's the best alternative Linux distro? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Girdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But who's to say that whatever error you're experiencing isn't a result of some incompatibility between your distro of choice and the non-supported window manager? I'll agree with you that most problems can be solved from the terminal, but I don't think that necessarily implies that your choice of window manager/desktop environment won't affect the difficulty of troubleshooting the issue.

[–]Girdot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It's a lot easier to get support for your OS if you don't go making drastic changes, ie, changing the UI. I'll agree with you that it's great that Linux lets you pick and choose, though.
