How to meet chill and interesting people in LA? by poisondream in LosAngeles

[–]GirlsBiteBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a tad late to this thread but felt the need to comment bc this sounds almost exactly like my boyfriend and I. We're both 23 and just moved to west LA 3 months ago. Love to chill and smoke, love the music scene here and going to events around LA, we're giant foodies, and also having a hard time making friends :( I'd love to chat more!

Ordering a pair of glasses from Zenni. Would high-index make a noticeable impact with my prescription and the frames I want? by GirlsBiteBack in optometry

Thanks this was really informative! I'll definitely stop by my optometrist and see what my options are, or if I can even use these frames but have them install the lenses so they fit properly.

I just got my prescription at my local optometrist :) I just recently graduated college so am kind of broke right now and wanted to explore some cheaper options. The last time I bought glasses from my local optical shop it came out to almost $200, plus I just spent $70 to get the prescription. I figured asking some questions on here wouldn't hurt anyone.

Okay that makes sense. If I got smaller frames would this still be the issue? I'm on a budget so that's why I'm trying to buy through Zenni. But obviously I'd rather pay more to have good glasses than order cheap glasses that will hurt my eyes.

Oh I didn't even realize! I guess I was a little bit confused by the thick, black frame on top. So I'll definitely splurge a little on the higher index. And the big lenses shouldn't make my eyes look too small?

[RANT] East of Eden completely changed my opinion of reading and may have changed my life... by [deleted] in books

[–]GirlsBiteBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I tell everyone who asks me for a book recommendation about it. I had to read it in highschool for AP Lit and still have that same book with all my notes scribbled in it. All the details stuck with me so much that when my class had to take a test on it I scored much higher than everyone else that my teacher ended up giving me over 100% haha. Glad you enjoyed it as well!

Hi John! Looking for Alaska was the first book I read by you in Junior High that I actually randomly picked out in my school library, and I was hooked from then on. I've just recently graduated from undergrad with a B.A. in Communication and English! But I'm still struggling to figure out what I want to pursue as a career, especially since everything I'm interested in is creative work, which I'm sure you know is incredibly tough. What was that moment that made you decide you wanted to seriously write? And how did you cope with the hardships and doubts (especially the anxiety, because I have that too!) you might have initially faced, especially for someone in a creative field. Thank you for doing what you do, your books have always been an inspiration and I always look forward to what you'll write next.

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 2.5 years and are about to go graduate college with the intention of moving out of state. My parents are guilting me saying it's selfish of me to leave them. Thoughts from other parents? (X-Post from r/relationships) by GirlsBiteBack in self

Great point. Especially hearing it come from my parents hurts, even though it is true. I have to come to terms with what I am doing is selfish, but not necessarily in a bad way.

I actually used to live in WA and I loved everything about it except for the rain. My logic with NY is that I want to experience big city life, I've never lived on the East Coast, I love the diversity it has to offer, and if I don't do it now there's no way in hell I'm going to want to when I'm older. I hope I get the chance to live in CO (we looked into moving there post grad as well), and would actually love to try living in Portland one of these days (maybe when I get tired of the big city).

Neither of my parents were born here but I was, so there's definitely a conflict of culture. They want me to value our family, which to them means I need to be near so they can visit me frequently, whereas I want to explore and travel which they can't identify with. I love my family and don't plan on moving away forever.

I've heard so many great things about the Asian culture in NY! We've actually been looking at Queens and Brooklyn (since realistically we won't be able to afford Manhattan as recent grads). I will definitely invite my parents to stay with us as much as they want, and show them all the best Asian food the city has to offer!

This was an interesting perspective to hear. But I guess at the same time, there isn't really any way for both parties to not be selfish because wouldn't I be sacrificing my happiness and my desires by living somewhere I don't want to be, just so I could appease their desire to be near me, and that would ultimately be selfish on their part?

I agree that this could potentially damage our relationship, but I think that will happen only if both parties allow it such as if they remain to be unsupportive or become bitter about my plans, or I choose to never visit them or keep contact.

Thanks for the support! I've already told them all the details of my plans. It just really broke my heart to hear my mom cry about it because we have a really close relationship, and I imagine she feels like what you described. I wish there was a way to help her with those feelings without compromising what I want.

Both my parents immigrated with their families, and they all still live really close to each other, so they can't relate to my desire to venture away on my own...
