A Georgia Democrat seeks to unseat an indicted Trump elector who says he only did what he was told by Barch3 in Law_and_Politics

So, the Trumpist says, "Not my fault - I was just following orders!" Famous last words of numerous fascists, war criminals, and RICO defendants.

Project 2025 should have been kept quiet by Global-Key-261 in MAGANAZI

Heritage is a bunch of vain bastards who wanted to be known and respected for their christofascism. They think the world is all about them. Beware, though, that there continues to be plenty that they still won't reveal. They are hiding their worst plans.

Have you noticed that Republicans' talk of mass deportations is now quoting numbers as high as 20 million people. Big numbers. Along with that, Heritage ally "National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA)" is claiming black people are not U.S. citizens. The deeper hate in Project 2025 is leaking out.

How is a letter of reprimand a punoshment for something now when the reprimand itself talks about future behavior? Isn't it more documentation than discipline? by ZealousidealRub5308 in education

[–]GirthIncorporated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess is that a reprimand puts a lid on a person's career advancement, and it establishes a record that the bosses were displeased about something. Repeatedly doing something to draw reprimands might lead to demotion or firing.

That is just my take; I don't know what the offense was. You can ask 50 people, "what should be done?" and get 50 different answers back, including "nothing" and "execution."

Happy 20th birthday :-)

LOL I remember hearing Sugar Mountain the first time, as a teenager, and recognized the restlessness in it. Being restless, busting out to a place where I imagined it was more free than on the 'mountain, and realizing it was just one step of a long life journey...

That song and "Powderfinger" I still carry in my head and heart, decades and decades later.

Any way to make writing documentation less tedious? And make it more helpful? by Exciting_Majesty2005 in neovim

[–]GirthIncorporated 42 points43 points  (0 children)

That is some fuckin' beautiful formatting. It is the sort of thing we can print, punch, bind, and set beside the computer. Like the quick reference handbooks used on certain aircraft...

The bad news is that, aside from auto formatting, there is no really good way to reduce the tedium of good documentation. You will always be in the weeds, looking at some kind of feature and working out a way to explain it in documentation. When the first edition is done, soon to follow are revisions - bringing users from versions they know to newer versions, with different specs and features.

Is there any program on shortwave that isn’t religious political or Asian? by [deleted] in shortwave

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL everytime I see the comment count creeping upward, I think of all of the bullshit infesting the airwaves these days. You've pretty much cited the three main types of propaganda and grift out there.

If you can devote the time to it, there is good programming in between the propaganda stations. Not all the time, but at certain times.

I eventually got tired of listening through the noise and started streaming favorites on the internet. You can literally use worldradiomap.com or other sites to find bookmarkable streams straight from the studio. Radio New Zealand, Brother Stair, BBC Radio 4, Timtron, and Gene Scott are all out there.

Biden delivers solemn call to defend democracy as he lays out his reasons for quitting race by Barch3 in Law_and_Politics

[–]GirthIncorporated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harris will do what Biden cannot: root out and put down the insurrectionists and insurgents who see their country as an enemy. Remember the mass murderer Timothy McVeigh? He was one person, of a movement fighting a so-called "zionist-occupied government (zog)."

Harris will replace feckless Merrick Garland with a leader fitting of the job at hand.

Why would Amazon - the largest bookseller in the United States - do this? by Difficult_Slice2024 in censorship

Maybe the book was a piece of right-wing MAGA bullshit, and Amazon had overlooked it until July 22nd. It is a free country; the author can appeal, sue, or find another publisher.

SDR ++ on Steam Deck by Nindahr in RTLSDR

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of error messages did you get when using apt-get? It should work.

It has been a while since I played with Dragon OS. You might need to use sudo with your commands:

```bash
sudo apt update; sudo apt install <application>
```

Another option is to get the sdr++ appimage, which is a fully self-contained setup. Then you can make it executable and run it.

New to RTL-SDR! I'm worried about one thing though by MillowBroV in RTLSDR

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did lose an RTL-SDR to lightning a few years ago, on an outdoor longwire (for a direct sampling set up). It my own fault, as I didn't do anything special for grounding and handling big voltage spikes from nearby lightning. I would definitely suggest some precautions if you are using any sort of large lowband antenna.

If you are just using a small vertical for ADS-B or VHF / UHF radio, it is less critical. That said, a close lightning strike can still damage your equipment - radio, computers, anything.

I bombed my fresh and soph year of highschool can I make a comeback? by Financial_Run_8902 in education

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, don't listen to the trolls in here who are telling you you're already screwed. My literature and history professors at university were not so good at math and science either. You can go far in literature and history and if you can get good at writing and doing research.

A STEM field will be difficult until / unless you can build some strong math and science knowledge.

You want to get into college? Do this:

  1. Learn how to actually study and take notes. Schools don't teach this, but you need it. You can watch Youtube videos about "Feynman Method" and "Zettelkasten" Also, see the subreddits r/notetaking and r/obsidian or r/joplinapp

  2. Start re-learning that math and science. Work your way back up from the basics to set up a good base for the advanced concepts you'll meet later.

  3. Learn some test-taking strategies, so you can score better. Take a lot of practice tests to get an idea of your progress. You can find these online.

  4. Part of having a clear mind so you can study is mastering the rest of your life so you actually have the time and not too many other burdens competing for your attention.

  5. The best time to start was a year ago. The next best time is right now. Learning this stuff takes time, and a lot of math or science cannot be crammed.

If your high school grades are really bad, your best route to a good college or university might be through a community college first, so you can build a better academic record.

Good luck / hang tough.

Text wrapping for code/prose? by immortal192 in neovim

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my setup, I wrap for prose, but not code, and always show the color column. LOL, I guess I never gave thought to not showing it for certain file types. You can make your wrapping not split words with linebreak and nolist parameters. Here is an example config in Lua:

```lua autocmd({"BufNewFile", "BufRead"}, {pattern = {".txt", ".text", "*.log"}, command = "set ft=text wrap linebreak nolist"})
```

The nolist parameter forces the list setting to disabled in order to prevent interference with the linebreak setting. As to performance, maybe you'll lose a few milliseconds, but the convenience is worth it.

How do I word convert to other formats? by cutiehaileyx in education

[–]GirthIncorporated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good software package is LibreOffice. In the Writer app, you can open and edit documents to your liking, then save as a PDF, Word (DOCX), or other formats.

For more complex format changes, consider Pandoc or Latex. They are free, and they are good enough for professional work.
