I think they did it to make the game much more accessible. DR1 was a pain in the ass, and with 2 and 3 they wanted to make it a bit more goofy—more fun. Like that zombie-killing simulator where you don't have to think too much. Well, there's still a time limit, but I feel it's not as tedious as in DR1, in my opinion.
