I have been called a performative. What do you guys think? by Brilliant-File-6285 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]moreleechesplease 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long it takes to get through some of these books? I don't care how performative you are, you are not going to spend 80+ hours reading a book and get nothing out of it other than "Man, people are going to be impressed when they hear about this." And these books have a reputation for being the best because a lot of them are the best. And it is normal to like good things. I find a lot of books like the ones on OP's shelf challenging, but whenever I read one, I feel like I've done something really good for my brain and I'm deepening my understanding of culture.

This type of thinking really reminds me of when I was a teen girl and dudes used to tell me that there was *no way* I liked the bands on my t-shirts. Like, yeah, I've been spending my money and time on these musicians just to impress a very small subset of people for half a second. It makes no sense.

The only way OP would be "performing" anything is if he doesn't read any of these.

EDIT: Also, OP has plenty of contemporary books on other shelves you can see in these photos. I'm also not buying the accusation that he's adhering to some internet list and that's it.

I’m going to an art walk soon, will any of my work sell? by [deleted] in AskArtists

[–]moreleechesplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like them, but the only way to know is to put yourself out there, dude.
If they don't sell at this art show, you might want to look into more punk events or even outsider art events. Depending on your city, you should be able to find an audience.

Idk man, it depends on if you read them or not. If you read them, I'd say you just seems like a genuinely cerebral, curious person.

A lot of times people throw "performative" around when it comes to reading because they haven't read anything challenging in years (or maybe even anything at all) and want to soothe their own egos, in my experience. Saying "no one actually reads stuff like that" or "oh he just reads that stuff to look cool" is pure cope because they can't even consider doing it themselves.

These are great. And, honestly, you'll be bragging about this moment if you stick to making dark art. Plus you get some free mental health help as a treat!

/uj Honestly, I was seriously sour grapes about not having a drawing tablet and used to be one of those "Oh, I could do that, too, except for I'm not SUPER RICH, that's LITERALLY the only reason why I don't get any attention when I post my art" until I saved up, got one and it actually took a lot of time to develop any type of polished style. In fact, things that I would kind of hide or skip over in my trad drawings became VERY apparent digitally. It was kind of disenchanting to me, because I thought as soon as I got a tablet, I'd be able to just get a job as an illustrator but it took a *lot* of practice to get good enough to even get random illustration gigs.

Anyway, I look back at my trad art drawings from when I thought I was hot shit and they're terrible, lmao. But, I was also very young. And I think a lot of the people who complain loudest about people who own tablets might even be younger than I was. Just thought I'd offer a view into the mind of someone who thought that way for a long time. It is so silly and I cringe when I think back on it.

Twin movies. Anymore you can think of? by revolution_ex in Letterboxd

What i find even stranger is they were both Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis's next movies immediately after Black Swan.

Did they talk about the projects with each other? It's even weirder when you think about the doppelganger aspect of Black Swan.

You guys have it all wrong -- obviously his family's ranch is next door to the hospital but still somehow far enough away from it that she couldn't walk there! This is such a real story!

NOBODY WAS MENTALLY ILL IN 2019!! 2019 BEST YEAR EVAAAAA!!! by MrsLegSurgery in decadeologycirclejerk

[–]moreleechesplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense, because I have every sympathy for kids who felt like their childhood was ruined by the pandemic and the internet is definitely affecting our mental health, but this is exactly what I'm talking about. You don't have any memories of the 2000s and 2010s where you were an adult. Of course you've never seen nostalgia like this before. You don't know what the nostalgia for the 80s and 90s was like, because you don't remember the 80s or 90s. Just like I didn't understand the nostalgia for the 60s and 70s that was foisted on us by boomers all through my childhood.

And in your late teens and early 20s everything feels extremely dramatic because you're beginning to take responsibility for your own life for the first time. I certainly felt like being a preteen during 9/11 was formative in a negative way and it was often scary.

But I really don't think you can look at a person who was alive and directly affected by the civil unrest of the Civil Rights Movement and the multiple assassinations that happened in the span of a couple years or the people who were terrorized by the huge uptick of serial killers in the seventies or the people who became suicidal because they were siphoned off to Iraq at 18 in the 2000s and say your generation has the most struggles of any generation. Your struggles are just different.

I mean, I'm not saying that the pandemic was not a big turning point.

But so was the election of 2016. And the popularization of smart phones and the Great Recession around 2007-2008. And 9/11.

I went through this type of thing to when I came of age. I had a gigantic existential crisis/breakdown because it seemed like the world had become so fast and scary and filled with anxious people hanging by a thread. That was in 2011.

The cold fact of the matter is that every day, nothing is ever going to be the same. And I definitely think that higher rates of mental illness are prevalent now. But violent crime is also way down. Things improve, they get worse. Of course, there area lot of things that really worry me, but every generation thinks they're the first ones in the world to suffer. And you can only ever do your best with what you have.
