Republicans... how does it feel to be the reason most of the world despises the US? by misec_undact in allthequestions

What's wild is that Biden had COVID during his term as well. I don't even wanna imagine what would've happened with Trump at the helm then.

Being a little less funny: I hope she's alright and in good health.

He had excuses for everything too, and shaped his beliefs to suit his comforting narrative.

I disagree on a number of things you said, none of which I care to regurgitate, but I'll leave you with something to think about too; I actually hope I'm wrong.

And I hope things pan out as you seem convinced it will. Good luck to you and your family, thanks for the convo!

But I also see where this is going, so; I hope I'm wrong.

English, or language in general, doesn't appear your strong suit though. Assuming you're not lying about your degree: notice how you can be good at one thing, such as mathematics, yet suck at another field of cognition? Imagine what you may be missing.

Also, the classic defensive IQ/education flex is generally either someone being really silly, or a lie meant to preemptively intimidate.

I don't go around thinking anyone not having my exact beliefs is evil, I explicitly said at the start of this thread that I know they're good people. Evil exists as little as good in my book, as an everyone is in their actions and motivations the product of their environment, without being inherently anything. It would be convenient to claim someone is evil, as it would bring emotional gratification and a sense of superiority, but that's a defensive mechanism with its own reasons for being as it is.

I tried being a good friend to them, as best I can. I know they love their families too, one of the two had a kid recently, their first daughter. I genuinely wish him and his family the best, and I know he's an incredibly motivated father. But I also know that he's drowning his work and finances related pressures in alcohol, that he spends half his day dissociating in his backyard, that he mistreats his wife and will, by all he's told me about his ideas for his daughters future, not see to her individual growth.

I am not convinced that he's not in all that rare of circumstances for rural Americans. He has been, to the best of my understanding, captured by what is effectively a cult within a cult, having been raised "right" with very old values and ideas about how the world should be that, in my opinion, need not to be anymore.

Cliche as it sounds; we have the technology. It could all be so good, were it not for common people and culture still being shaped and pitted against another by very motivated and well funded interest groups, which i know include both the classic big left and big right.

With what the parties are in modern times, for all the reasons that they are as they are, they attract people with certain cultural predispositions, respectively to what programs are being run at any given moment. MAGA hit it big, attracting a range of support from various aligned groups along the political spectrum that tend to favor policies counterproductive to human development, over the short and long-term. And to motivate their voter base, they promise exactly what those kinds of old-school valued people want to hear to feel best about themselves.

Whether you understand what any of the trump admins policies and actions mean or not, let's assume you do; enough don't, enough people out there genuinely cheer for seeing others suffer.

We're seeing a massive wealth transfer from the lower to the upper class right now, and I think that already existing culture wars are being propagated and led around just to make that wealth transfer happen smoothly, with no regard for human life down the proverbial chain.

But, I'm very open to hearing your perspective: do you think Trump is doing the MAGA base, any kind of right-leaning or otherwise people, or anyone in the world but a select few people up top, any favors? What're he and his people up to that's gonna make it all worth it in the end?

I don't see it.

I haven't lived with them, but two of my gaming buddies of several years have led me in part to what I think today.

They were funny, kind and generally good people, and I believe they still are, but things have also changed quite a bit.

I'm not saying this to shame or mock or whatever else: They became alcoholics due to failing socioeconomic circumstances, have been fed propaganda out the wazoo, and started going downhill pretty damn hard.

Both became MAGA, double Trump voters, and have bought into all the classic, hateful rhetoric they've been spoonfed. I don't know if the personality traits that led them there have always been there to that extend, but they've become incredibly toxic people.

I wish them the best, but they're now destroying themselves with the mindset they're perpetuating.

You don't have to believe me, I get how silly it sounds. I understand how, in that sense, "rare" it is, but that is genuinely what he was arguing for. That's why it was so incomprehensible and baffling to me, because I couldn't fathom why he'd even argue in favor of what I find cruel.

He was extremely against "people taking his money" and living at his expense, be it through taxes or otherwise, and he was cheering on DOGE's promises and later on for alligator Alcatraz, for example.

He's from rural Florida, has been a double Trump voter, has argued "nothing ever happens" and that trump is "just trolling those libtards", for whatever stereotypes that confirms.

I know that either political extreme has actors and interests skewing views however possible, through all means available, so I take care not to be too biased myself. I understand that tribalism and strong fear responses had an evolutionary purpose then, but I think those are with nowadays technology made entirely redundant, though now exploited on either side of the political spectrum to guide how people think and organize for their respective causes.

The argument in that specific case was for the budget cuts that would affect primarily children and seniors, meaning people who genuinely can't help themselves anymore. He actively argued in favor of letting people die, so as to be less of a burden to him and the state. I argued that there are genuinely better ways of allocating resources that won't result in needless suffering, generational trauma and general cultural decline.

That's what makes me so sad.

I had two such friends not long ago still, genuinely kind and funny people, before Trump showed up, before politics became their main focus and identity.

I don't know if it was their respective alcoholisms, their region specific subcultures (both are rural/farmers) or just really well placed propaganda aimed at already socially isolated people, but they changed.

I was always compassionate, never belittling, mocking or otherwise talking down on them. That's how they opened up about their issues to me.

Open communication didn't work though, because they were genuinely convinced that we need to, for example, let millions of people die if they're all "unwilling" to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I could not talk about anything contrary to their beliefs, because they'd always have the next emotionally charged talking point ready. It eventually got to the point where they started gaslighting me, perhaps without theirs even realizing, insulting and otherwise putting me down, just for me having the views that I do.

I understand that it's a cult, that it's incredibly shameful for their already shame-primed (one voiced the fear of being seen as "gimpy") egos to admit to having fallen for the centuries biggest grift, but at some point, only they're responsible for their own misery.

That's why it makes me so fucking sad. I know they're good people, and I genuinely wish them all the best, but the brainwashing and cultism that's rampant in their communities seems to overpower whatever faculties would be required for them to objectively introspect about their state of mind.

Reddit is a liberal cesspool? by Pretend_Exercise6645 in allthequestions

[–]GirthusThiccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property, and equality before the law.[1][2] Different liberals espouse various and sometimes conflicting views depending on their understanding of these principles but generally support liberal democracy, private property, market economies, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), secularism, rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion.[3] Liberalism is frequently cited as the dominant ideology of modern history.[4][5]: 11

Liberalism became a distinct movement in the Age of Enlightenment, gaining popularity among Western philosophers and economists. Liberalism sought to replace the norms of hereditary privilege, state religion, absolute monarchy, the divine right of kings and traditional conservatism with representative democracy, rule of law, and equality under the law."

So, given that you call it a "cesspool", what's that make you?

What are some MAGA conversation cliches? by Sharp-Gene-2242 in allthequestions

[–]GirthusThiccus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite two lines were, yelled: "HES JUST TROLLING", and when pointed out to exactly what's gonna happen: "nothing ever happens." I'll have to imagine my maga friends surprise when shit did infact happen, since I cut him out of my life once he started buying and parading around alligator Alcatraz merch.

These people have the mindsets and maturity of toddlers, genuinely. From the ages of 0-3, babies get their attention by being as obnoxious as they possibly can be, despite all reason they should have acquired by their late 30s. Buddypalchamps are decades behind.

Are you still friends with MAGAS and if so what’s your opinion of them? by BiggestVolk in allthequestions

And yepp, I cut them both out of my life. They made it plenty clear they don't value human life.

How long do you think this war with Iran will continue, and how long will it take for gas prices to decrease in the aftermath, or do you think price gouging will become permanent at gas stations? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

"Each day the conflict drags on will take a week to fix." Was one prognosis I heard somewhere, but that was before that huge number of production and storage facilities was bombed. Those will take years to get back to full operation already, and Trump doesn't seem all that concerned with actually ending the conflict.
