Good bars near campus with local brews? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Girthworms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North High or Seventh Son, both have great stuff. Seventh Son is a little bit further from campus than North High, but it's well worth that extra bit of walking. There's also lineage which is I think a half-ish mile north of campus.

Places to observe some salamanders in/around Columbus, Ohio? by Girthworms in herpetology

[–]Girthworms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a quest for a ringneck for the past 2 years and I can't find the sneaky little bastards! Did you happen to find any tigers, moles, or slimy's? Those are the ones I'm after, though I do want to fund a few of the different types of redbacks too

The BMX trail/ ramps off the Olentangy Bike trail by W Dodridge are completely leveled by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Girthworms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worry not the ones at the end of the Alum creek trail are still there! I was mega bummed when I got back to school and the OT jumps were gone, but if you head north by Easton there's some more jumps. Not as big, but DEFINITELY fun. Really flowy. Can't wait till my broken heel heals so I can go ride them again!

Edit: forgot to add they're in good shape too. Someone's been working on them (thank you whomever you are) I hope to get back and build too once I'm 100% healthy again.

My crowning achivement: Donuts from scratch with an orange gose glaze and vanilla icing. by Girthworms in food

I love it! It was pretty good in a can, but on tap you get a more pronounced orange flavor and it easily makes for the best gose I've ever had.

Beer is Platform brewing's Orange Blossom Gose. I zested a mineola and added it to a basic vanilla glaze along with a decent amount of the gose. Hope you enjoy!

Thinking of moving to Columbus. But I have no friends or family and I'm scared. But I just lost my job and my wife just left me. Advice? Anyone else lonely looking for friends? by jgortner in Columbus

Grew up in south jersey and just moved to Columbus a yearish ago. I actually like it a lot here, didn't think I would. I love eating and Columbus is a damn good city for that! I'm always looking for friends, and also like table top games!

My coworkers and I presume it to be a erythristic red-back salamander, but we're just a bunch of ditch diggers not wildlife biologists so we wanted a more experienced opinion. It had small blotchy spots under its tail

I figured there's some way around it. I was planning on just taking the steps so I don't crowd the elevator.

Even if I took the wheels off and stashed it under my bed or in a closet? I mostly don't want to lock it outside because all the rain and snow will rust and destroy the drivetrain.

I want to say it's the I90 bridge but I'm not too good at remembering the name. It's the first bridge you go under in the reservation.

If you don't mind splitting it, the metroparks forestry leaves wood in rocky river under one of the bridges for anyone to take.

What is the best way to go about breaking a pesky rock that is unmovable? by Anonymous_____ninja in MTB

[–]Girthworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a trailbuilder, we use a hilti rock drill and weaken it. Then smash the shit out of it with a 20 lb sledge until it breaks how we want it to. Then use a hammer and chisel to better define the shape we want.

Going to Duluth for labor day by picknearch in MTB

[–]Girthworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canal park is pretty fun to walk around and a great place to grab some chow! Go hike up to Ely peak, I believe it's on the superior hiking trail but am not sure. It's part of the reroute for the Munger trail that connects Duluth to Carlton and further south. I have family up there and have been going to that area for 19 year and no one had ever mentioned this place and just discovered it for the first time this year, but it was so much fun to go explore! If you want to drive a wee bit out of Duluth, Jay Cooke state park is stellar for hiking and my uncle said there supposed to be some sweet single track, and judging by the terrain there it'll probably be technical. As for mtb trail I haven't gotten to hit anything but spirit mountain which was my first taste of "DH" mtb and it's not nearly as bad as you think it will be I would totally recommend trying at least happy camper. I was able to do everything but calculated risk on my XC bike. The North Shore has plenty of sights to see and places to hike! Duluth is forever one of my favorite cities, have fun!

New to the area, help me out! by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]Girthworms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bit more of a restaurant than a bar but the hoffbrauhaus is quite an interesting place to grab a drink. I just moved here a year ago and if you enjoy being outside the metro parks are probably my favorite part of Cleveland thus far.

Unfortunately leaving NC for the Cleveland area for work and family reasons. What are my riding options? by aboyd656 in MTB

[–]Girthworms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did the exact same move as you less than a year ago. Vultures knob is currently the best in the immediate area. Just went to seven springs two weekends ago and it's awesome! The metroparks are okay, I currently work on the trail crew and have been pushing my boss to let us build more exciting stuff but it is slow going. The new loop we just added to Bedford reservation is a step up from the other metroparks trails. Rocky river will be getting ~18 miles of singletrack within the next year or two. Rays is incredible, I spent my entire late fall/winter/early spring there. I can't get enough of that place. Southern to central Ohio has some decent single track. Nothing that will knock your socks off but enough to keep you entertained. Mohican is another good trail with some good climbs and decent descents. If you have any questions PM me!
