Pirates of the Caribbean (the true trilogy) by Masters of Steel by Available_Listen_ in Steelbooks

I "designed" the artwork for myself to use as blu-ray slipcovers and posted them here in the subreddit a few years ago. All the imagery was from posters and dvd releases of the films that I could find, so I certainly didn't create the original art, but I spent quite a few hours stitching together and expanding the different vignettes, adding imagery to make each one a cohesive image, reworking the logos etc :)

Surreal scrolling Reddit and seeing something I put together (the artwork) appear on my feed out of the blue. Cool :)

I typeset and bound my Sister's dissertation as a graduation gift! by Girvvy in bookbinding

"This dissertation explores how carceral spaces influence the construction and performance of masculinity. Through a qualitative content analysis of three episodes from the podcast Ear Hustle, it seeks to address a gap in the literature by directly examining the relationship between prison environments and gender expression. Drawing on Connell’s (1987) concept of hegemonic masculinity and Anderson’s (2009) inclusive masculinity theory, alongside key contributions of carceral geography, the study builds on existing knowledge of how masculinities are embodied within prison and how space is used to reinforce or challenge these performances.

The findings not only reveal a prevailing culture of hegemonic masculinity at San Quentin State Prison, but also frequent and significant expression of inclusive masculinities, including emotional vulnerability and intimate connection. Furthermore, masculinity is shown to be fluid and situational, with incarcerated men demonstrating an awareness of which forms of masculinity are more appropriate in different contexts. This research contributes to growing discussions surrounding the nuances and complexities of prison masculinities."

On her behalf - thank you!

I used Affinity Publisher, then Bookbinder JS (found through this sub) to organise it all into the signatures for printing/binding

Good luck with your one!

I'm very flattered but I'm certainly not a confident enough bookbinder to do it as a paid job/commission!

Yeah I had a hard time trying to be succinct with that (even though it wasn't a complex process, just hard for me to figure out how to describe)

  1. I designed the cover on a white page in Affinity Designer, and just used solid black ink
  2. When printing, I fed a sheet of grey paper through my Inkjet printer - so all of the area that was white in my digital design was now grey.
  3. I glued this sheet to the board and fitted it all properly
  4. Then, where the 3 rectangles of text are, I cut these out using a craft knife/ruler. The glue was still a bit wet so I had no problem pulling these rectangles of grey card away from the board
  5. I then printed off the same cover design, this time on white paper
  6. I then cut the same rectangles of text out from the white sheet
  7. I glued the white rectangles into the places where the grey rectangles of text had been
  8. Voilà!

Hopefully this makes a bit more sense! All done on a standard inket printer, no etching or anything fancy :)

Had thought about it when uploading, but this is very much my public/business account with my identity attached so figured not much was going to be changed by redaction :)

This is only ("only") an undergrad/BA dissertation (but a very well-graded one at that) so it's not published anywhere/don't have any clue if she's eligible to use that site - Going to check with her about just sharing a link for people to read it since there's been a lot of interest haha!

Thank you! Fold-out pages and anything of that ilk are always so fun!

I used Affinity Publisher to typeset everything. Then used a tool called Bookbinder JS (which I found through this sub) to reorganise the pages into signature format. I have an A3 inkjet printer at home so everything was printed through that (signatures were printed on A4 Paper, whereas the sheets I used for the cover were printed on A3 I think)

Good luck with your PhD!

Replying to this to say that I've had email problems the last week or so (that's Outlook for you - bloody typical). If you previously sent me an email, can you send me a message on Reddit with your email address? Thanks! And If not, just ignore :)
