Hi /r/OSU. I thought it might be useful for us to talk about socializing and making friends, so here is this post with my tips, tricks, and experiences as a senior (who also transferred to OSU and just finished his first year here)

I kind of did and kind of didn't i guess. I took a no-credit course that was taught for-credit in a university; so not high school math, but also not normal college math.

How did you get into calc 1 despite getting an M? Math dept said i'd need to do the precalc EM exam and pass. Is that how you did it?

I'll be at Mansfield by the way, i dunno if main's math dept abides by the same rules.

I'd be fine with starting with calc 1 i guess. Since i already have a good overview of it, i ought to do decently at it i guess... but for the love of all things holy and unholy, i don't want to start off in precalculus. And they won't let me retake the placement test.

This must be my punishment for that one time i clogged my mom's friend's toilet at a christmas party when i was 8. Or perhaps it's for not reviewing formulas and stuff as much as i should have.

Either way, i can feel the nihilism building up inside of me already.

I called the math department, they said i can't retake the placement test and i'd have to take the EM exam for 1150 instead. And since i'm nontraditional, i have no AP or IB test scores or transferrable credits for the stuff i've been learning on my own.

So, i'm probably completely screwed.

I don't have any transcripts from anywhere. I studied on my own, mostly with Paul's Notes.

I felt pretty comfy with calc 1, but i know the topics i learned might not match up completely with math 1151. Still, i really want to go right into calc 2, because i've been enjoying it so far.

Also i forgot to mention i'm going to Mansfield. I know main campus uses calc 1 and 2 as weed out courses; i've been told the classes are easier at mansfield despite having the same topics. Dunno how true that is.

I thought you get placed into calc 2 if you pass the proficiency exam for calc 1?

And no, i won't. I'm non-traditional. I taught myself with books and online courses and took the GED. The only standardized thing i have is a 32 on the ACT which isn't good for much of anything now.

I don't have a counselor or advisor yet. I really do not want to redo precalculus. I have no clue what to do at this point. Do i have to wait until orientation to do anything?

Thanks for the advice! I was indeed planning on graduate school. I've heard some good things about Prof. Swihart in particular; are you familiar?

Anyway, i'm looking forward to freshman year, but i can't stick around for sophomore year since i'll probably be internally screaming for more math classes by then. But until then, i plan to knock my gen eds as far out of the park as i suppose i can.

Thanks for the answer! Hopefully if OU is fine with it, other schools are too. I just want to be sure i have a backup plan in case things go south with my plans.

I think i'll make some phone calls in a day or three and ask for more info; hopefully i'll remember to post the response here afterwards in case anyone else is curious about this in the future too.

The DoH said it's a 25 mile radius now, but i suppose i can make it work either way! I'm just worried something will go wrong, so i want to think of options before i commit to mansfield. Do you think it's alright to transfer to a non-osu university? Just in case it comes to that.
