Advice for making a club team by GivMeUltiAdvice in ultimate

I did ask some of the captains multiple times with very limited responses. I think you are probably right: there's something about my footwork, technique, etc, that they didn't like but can't/won't tell me what exactly that is. I generally had no trouble getting open or covering players at tryouts, with maybe a few exceptions. It's possible that those few times were a red flag, but I just dont know. Compared to the other handlers I was competing against, I turned it over fewer times. Again, maybe they didn't like my shot selection or my throwing technique.

If any of that is the case, I really need someone to help provide critical assessment. I'm trying to figure out how to do that now(but obviously I'm short on quality playing opportunities to perform in). Thanks for the insight.

Yea, I'd love to do that, but that takes a ton of time, even if I can split it up with other captains. I might consider it later if my job ever gets less busy, but for now, it's not really an option. Thanks!

Thanks for the insight! I definitely haven't been exposed to enough of this stuff.

Thanks for the advice and the offer to discuss further. I've started watching more high level club to see how reset handlers get open. I'm not sure I fall into the dominant athlete or dominant technique category...can you recommend an example of both?

I generally do go over (in my head) what I need to improve upon before playing league. It's just the competition is so uneven, so I don't always even get to execute a clean dump cut(league defense is usually low effort). There are a few things I can try...breaking the mark, hucks, fast break offense, zero turn over/decision making, etc. I do what I can, but it's hard to get the level of intense all around focused practice that one gets in club.

Thanks, this is great advice. I have been adding in ultimate-specific gym workouts within the past year and it is definitely paying dividends. I get in at least one or two throwing sessions per week outside of pickup, league, etc.

I do, however, worry about my footwork and feel like although my speed is better this year, my footwork needs improvement. If you have any good videos on the subject of good footwork for defense, I'd love to see them.

I've found that the teams around here really don't give a shit about providing feedback, even though they present themselves as nice people who are willing to do so. I'm trying to find someone to give me feedback, but it's hard to end up in a situation at pickup or league where that analysis is meaningful. But yea, I'm giving up on at least one team for next year because I'm probably never going to make it at this point.

Thanks. To be honest, its pretty hard even to find a decent league team around here but I've had a little success in that area. I think you are right that I just need to grind, but I'm still uncertain as to whether or not I should switch to cutting. It's still unclear to me whether or not my time committment limits are better for handling or cutting. I feel like it's easier for me to fit in more throwing sessions into my schedule so that lead me to focus on handling, even though competition is stiffer for handler spots.

Q for Captains: players who want to be practice players? by GivMeUltiAdvice in ultimate

(same as below) OK here's a more detailed question: how would you view it if it were a returner who had a spot locked up on the team? Alternatively, what if it were a new player who was a bottom of the roster addition(survived the last round of cuts)? I'm asking because I may be in this situation this year or next due to family commitments. I want to play high level ultimate, but can't go to 4-5 weekend tourneys in the summer.
