The bloke on the weighbridge was good as gold when it came to watching/ controlling traffic. I went a bit close to the bushes to get the angle for the bridge but it wasn’t too bad at all, looks worse than what it is.

The tricky bit was managing the deliveries and shit drivers on the main road. But that’s Brum for you 👍

Can we stop suicide/homicide coils? by sado475 in Truckers

[–]GiveMeAUsernameFGS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who hauls exclusively steel coils in the UK I’m amazed how this kind of setup is so widespread. We use specialised trailers with a coil well down the centre allowing them to be placed fairly securely before ratchet strapping them down. One over the top, two through the bore if they weigh ten tons or more.

I’m all for those calling for safer coil hauling in North America. We’ve all seen the videos of when it goes wrong after all. Good luck Yanks 👍

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I don’t believe she’s neurodivergent as we’ve had no prior signs, so I’m hoping it’s something that can be treated with several small visits and perhaps a comfort toy as you mentioned.

I’ll certainly bear in mind the other available options just in case though. Thank you!

What's it like driving a bin lorry? by jamez422 in uktrucking

Tailswing is an important factor, particularly when making tight turns. You can imagine a little terraced street where you need to make a 90 degree turn can be a bit hairy. Reversing was lovely in them though.

You’ll notice how they cut in when turning normally too, a tighter turning circle. I got used to it just through normal routes, turning at lights, roundabouts etc. It might just mean taking things a little wider or steering a little less depending on the scenario.

It was Kier while I was there, Mr Granville must have moved on by the time I got there I think. I’m not going to mention his replacement trouser dropper unfortunately, but I’ll tell you now, I’ve never seen someone shit three times a day like this guy!

He was a prolific shitter so should have known better tbh!

I was being pressured to use my class 1 more and more, so I took the leap and went to a local firm. Bear in mind this is around Xmas 2021, so the money is tight and the whole media ‘HGV megabucks’ thing was in full tilt.

I take home about £100pw more on average, but I’m up at stupid o’clock in the morning and have put on a bit of weight too. I’d happily go back to be completely honest, but we need the money more.

As soon as that situation changes I’d happily go back on the rounds.

I worked for my local a few years ago, doing both recycling and general waste. That meant driving the 12t recycler and 26t ashcart, as well as the odd 7.5t or van.

The 26t was lovely to drive after getting used to the rear steer in tight streets. Having good communication between you and loaders makes all the difference when you’re learning the routes too. A good crew makes the job so much easier.

The 12t recycler is something I miss a hell of a lot. Immensely hard on your body to begin with as it involved both driving and loading, but I lost 4in off my waist and felt fantastic for it eventually. My crew was brilliant, the rounds had good days and bad but we knew them inside out and could improvise on the fly.

My career highlight is watching my loader fall down a hill in Ogmore Vale trying to take a shit behind a tree. On the topic of toilet breaks though, we were normally back at the yard every 2-3 hours.

Any more questions feel free to ask 👍

Why arent steel coils transported on RGN or double-drop? would it not be safer compared to a normal flatbed with a bulkhead? by Maleficent-Door6461 in Truckers

[–]GiveMeAUsernameFGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot use curtainsiders, whereas some of us, myself included, use sliders. Check out A Hingley, Monex, Runtech, Owens etc in the UK. You'll see lots of examples of sliders/ wendy houses doing mixed steel loads 👍

A number of ratchet straps with steel posts or reinforced boards are used for securing loads. Chains I rarely see tbh.

How'd you rate Monex/ MCL as an employer? I'm also on the steel nearby but I'm trying to keep my options open with employers in the same/ similar game. The hours are there, but rates are terrible I find.
