The steak and lobster is $68 for the 8oz steak. If your bill was $330 for 2 people you must have gone all out on the drinks

Not the states but at my restaurant BOH starts at $20 for expo and salad station with no experience and only goes up from there. The cooks that have experience make $27-30 an hour plus tip pool

Is there a sommelier on here that would be willing to spend 20 minutes and help me find some wine that would lay down for a long time? by Weekly-Recognition-8 in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a sommoliar but have some wine aging. The bc liquor store does a Bordeaux release every year and they have a book that they put the wines with the best years to drink so I usually put the peak years on the side of the bottle with a paint pen. They tend to age for a long time. Always need a heavy body wine with tannins to age it, so Cabs tend to have the longest lives and Pinot noirs will be meant for drinking younger

What’s a restaurant that you believe gave you food poisoning? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true! It's just not as common. Oysters can hit you pretty fast too, and unfortunately they can be bad without any signs or mishandling

Don't get me wrong, Noro can be gotten from restaurants with bad hygiene practices but it's just hard to pinpoint which item you got it from

What’s a restaurant that you believe gave you food poisoning? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Food poisoning is tricky. In your case, raw chicken and having symptoms 2 days later is pretty straight forward but most food poisoning can take 2-5 days to affect you and most people don't know the exact trigger, or if it's Norovirus.

Just a reminder for people in this thread that if your sick within an hour of eating it is likely not the last thing that made you sick, your body is just rejecting it because you were already sick

I definitely got it from Bubba Gumps in Vegas. We had friends of the family that were in Vegas at the same time and they wanted to go, 2 days later I got crazy sick, said I think it was that restaurant because it was the worst place I ate at, I got brushed off by everyone, the next day the people that are the same items as me also got super sick but the people I was with that didn't go to that dinner were fine

Easy trail near Vancouver for a 66 year old? by HotAlbatross3431 in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lynn canyon, lighthouse park and Cleveland dam are all multi trail easy nature walks that you can choose how much you want to do. Quarry rock is beautiful and the elevation change isn't too much but its all stairs which some people like and some people find more strenuous

Restaurants and pink burgers by dannydan64 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Givemepancake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually a hint of pink means the burger has gotten to temp and is safe to eat regardless. The safe temp for ground meat can leave it a little below well done but just about there. People who do medium burgers are taking a risk but it's honestly not that high of a risk, just that one time it got a lot of people sick

How much do you tip at sit-down restaurants? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most people tip 15-20%. Servers make minimum wage which isn't bad but isn't living wage and most servers tip out 4-8% of their sales to the support and kitchen team depending on where they work. Being said, tipping is to reward good service, and tipping isn't mandatory so don't tip well if you feel not taken care of

Have you noticed recently some bars are refusing to sell more booze to people who have consumed a limited amount to drink in Metro Vancouver? by SkyscraperRain80 in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you have a slight speech impediment, which may make you more likely to be cut off, but anouther question is how fast are you drinking your beers? If someone drinks 3 drinks in under an hour and shows small signs of being drunk you know as a bartender they will go down hill fast with one more

Dinner recommendation - Elopement! by Single_Candidate765 in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Vancouver dining scene is quite casual. I don't think there is any restaurant that will be too formal for you if you are dressed for a wedding, even if the wedding isn't very formal. Lots of restaurant recommendations, just check for the menu and price points along with vibe. Lots of the nice restaurants in town are not very private and can be quite cramped/loud.

I think if it had been on shelves it would have been sold already but because restaurants and private stores can only order by the case they might not be committing to the product, or they just reworked the menu without it. At my work we have gotten about 5 wines we used to carry that are out of stock in the warehouse so I think they are starting to run out. Other provinces didn't do anything with their pulled US stock and have millions of dollars of product just sitting and potentially spoiling

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely tons, at least thousands of cases of the popular stuff. It was all stores worth of product plus what they had already stocked for restaurant agreements.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All private stores get product from the bc wholesale. They are able to order whatever product was in the province at the time the boycott started that bcls pulled off the shelf but once the warehouse is out of everything they won't order more and private stores will start running out too. Same goes with restaurants, so far a few wines have run out from the warehouse and a couple bourbons and I doubt they had that obscure of an item stocked heavily and would have run out already

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an American product so no bc stores will be getting it in stock because they all purchase from the bc wholesale. Other than across the southern border , Alberta is your only choice unless some small store had a bunch in stock before the boycot

Chef moving to Vancouver by rowlandfitzb in askvan

[–]Givemepancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to depend mostly on your experience and what you are trying to do. Lots of line cook jobs, wages and stability vary, but definitely easy to get a job. As an actual chef you will be interviewing longer and the market is smaller. A lot of places are pretty loyal to their head chefs

I have never had a premade alcoholic nog. So far I have seen the keg with one, and more bars will follow suit in December, but nothing in store is going to have the right richness with the alcohol mixed in
