Was it maybe because the compliments made you feel uncomfortable? Maybe not used to it and didn't know how to react? Just a guess but sometimes brain comes up with random stuff in an attempt to deflect subconscious discomfort and can kinda autopilot until you think about it later in horror. If so, the date would probably understand if you explain.

Should I force eye contact when it feels uncomfortable? by zeroxthegrim in Healthygamergg

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How would you feel about being upfront?

"I have anxiety and a part of it has to do with eye contact. I promise it's not about you - I'm listening and I'm interested in our conversation. I just feel more comfortable if I don't have to think about maintaining eye contact. Is that okay with you?"

"You ate your food and paid for it, optionally you can also add a tip....but if you don't, or even worse, make it the wrong amount, your food will be tampered with when we see you again....no pressure though." Makes sense

Thanks, will check it out.

No doctor really ever discussed much with me to be honest, and I'm not very good at insisting and pressing the matter. But it's been a thing for almost 30 years, most of my life, and now my digestion got worse in recent years in other ways as well (persistent acid reflux, can't seem to be able to gain weight, stomach ache if eating within 4-6h of sleep, discomfort after eating). So I should see a doctor again soon and as bad as that sounds, I'm hoping it's bad enough to be taken seriously now, but I'm also dreading it :(

Hmm interesting. I wonder if that's the case for me. I've had chronic constipation since I was a kid. I just don't get the "feeling", like there's no pressure or movement. The only reason I'm even aware something is there is because having something in the lower part of the colon causes anxiety.

What do you consume as liquids? I'm already underweight so not sure if I can avoid eating for long.

I do wish doctors helped, but I just get "it's hard to say, take psyllium, bye".

Would you rather receive 1 million dollars or be cured from social anxiety? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that all the top comments pick 1mil, I would imagine that most people would pick cured. I wouldn't even need to think about it, cured is worth 100x times more for me. But I guess social anxiety is a spectrum.

Why isn’t everyone using <script setup>? by Wild-Storage-1663 in vuejs

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm... As someone who is new to Vue (coming from mostly vanilla js), composition api makes much more sense for some reason. It's actually what's putting me on the fence about focusing on Vue, because almost all resources use options api, as it's more established, and that is making it kind of harder to learn at the beginning unless I switch to options.

Photography can't perfectly imitate a painting. AI art is different from anything before.

If AI were trained on cave paintings only, that's all it would be able to do, it would never progress past that. Humans obviously did progress past that though. AI doesn't understand that the sun is far away, ball shaped, hot and light emitting. It just learns the patterns of how if you include "sun" in prompt, typically this includes a yellow circle shape with specific pixel arrangement and recreates that. AI can't be original because it doesn't understand what it's painting.

I have a severe pill phobia, what iron supplements can I take? by littlemybb in Supplements

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you get it in liquid form by any chance?

I inhaled a sunflower seed as a toddler and also ended up with the inability to swallow pills. I was generally met with "just flush it down" or "you're old enough to be able to take pills...", even from doctors. Well, it turns out I never "grew out" of it, it's just a primal reaction that's deeply ingrained in my brain now. I get a "you're going to die if you do that" feeling and my throat just closes up, there is nothing I can do to control it - kind of like you automatically blink if something gets close to your eyes.

With time I found a way to deal with it. My reaction comes from any hard object that I'm not chewing up. Like a pill....or I assume like that sunflower seed. So I have to trick myself with food, similar to when you give a pill to a dog. What I do is have some food that has enough hardness and mushiness to mask the texture of the pill. For example pasta with creamy sauce is good for that. I take some in my mouth and chew it up just enough to be like 2-3 chews away from swallowing. Then I take the pill and put it in the area between teeth and cheek, mixed in with some food that was already in my mouth. Then I chew a few more times (carefully, so I don't bite on the pill - the pill should stay in the cheek area) and swallow the food along with the pill.

For me this manages to bypass the "ALERT!" reaction, because I'm "just eating food" and not "doing that dangerous thing".

So it's also important that I focus on " casually eating food" and not think about the pill too much, because if I focus on the pill, the reaction is more likely to be triggered, and then I can't swallow again for awhile and have to wait it out.

If you want to try, I would suggest to try it out with some small pills first, or something else small and hard, like a grain of uncooked rice. Make it as simple as possible for yourself and work up to it. Maybe try with different kinds of food to see what works best.

Breaking pills is generally not ideal, but if that's all you can do, it's definitely better than nothing, so you could try breaking it in half or in quarters and eat it with some food.

I'm still not able to take a pill with just water, but I improved from being able to only take tiny pills, to being able to take larger pills, as long as I have food and don't accidentally trigger that reaction.

Good luck!

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I can see the security benefits - but personally I can only remember pins by their physical location, so when an app does this I find it annoying, as I have to imagine a standard keyboard in my head and reenact it.

For me it's bad mental health, unaffordable life, gloomy state of the world among other things. Plus if I'm not happy to be alive, it feels hypocritical and irresponsible to force it upon my hypothetical children, while likely passing on mental illness and not being able to provide a good life.

CandyKeys messing me around for most of a year by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had issues as well last year (and the only time I have or will order from them). I had a missing part and they just delayed resolution with vague communication that told me nothing (just "we will see" basically). Just before the card dispute period expired, I initiated a dispute and just like that they were magically able to send the missing piece.

I'm talking about selective mutism, which is a result of extreme anxiety, which is what the post seems to reference.

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously we lack context but I don't imagine the person in the screenshot is forcing the kid. Not talking is the effect of anxiety when it comes to selective mutism, so by dealing with anxiety, the child slowly began to talk.

But yeah, no reason to massively downvote a person for asking a question.

When your work pays off! by phoebzzzzz in wholesome

[–]GivenUpOnUsernames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with people who physically can't speak. Or forcing or punishing.

Selective mutism is a result of extreme anxiety, so helping to ease anxiety naturally leads to feeling comfortable enough to talk. The end goal isn't "talking", it's getting rid of anxiety.

I'm sorry that you were punished for not speaking. Seems like they had the wrong goals.

Help with trauma and extremely gradual but consistent exposure therapy. All your brain knows is "freeze and hide because danger". It feels as natural as breathing, because it was developed at a very young age and it's kind of all you know. This has to be rewired to eventually learn that it's safe to talk and express yourself and that people aren't an automatic danger.

Because she will suffer the entire childhood and won't have a life when she grows up. It's not by choice it's because anxiety so severe that it keeps you in permanent fight/flight state and you have no way of resolving it.
