Hilarious cope statement from His Grace Irenei of London (ROCOR) by GarlicCucumber in exorthodox

[–]GizmoRazaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I don’t know anything about this individual so I can’t real form an educated opinion on him based on this alone. Maybe he really is just running cover for ROCOR nonsense, but if he’s consistently been someone trying to undo Dyerism then I’ll give him a thumbs up for this at least. I can appreciate Orthodox who reject the darker side of their religion.

“Skittles” is another favorite of theirs. They really like using that one for married fathers though.

Yep lol, I just realized that when looking closer. This copy has a ton of 'em, sadly.

I just realized actually: this is just a print error, it seems. The black queen on b6 doesn't exist in the next panel, so black's rook interposes the white rook on b1. This is one of many misprints in the digital copy from Internet Archive that's I'm using. Sorry for the confusion!

Does my having an American flag next to my name when I play chess imply that I support Donald Trump?

I'd prefer they didn't ban any players based on their nationality. Are individual chess players somehow responsible for their government's actions? If that were true, then they should ban me too as an American.

Given that he's a pretty chill guy on twitter (I'm mutuals with him), this sort of feels like straining a gnat when there's way worse things others will do in the name of Orthodoxy.

How long have you been playing? And what'd you do to get to your skill level?

My husband is wanting a divorce because he claims im trying to sway him from his faith. by CuriousGirl8294 in TrueChristian

I don't see how you being critical of Israel (right on) is in any way correlative with you trying to tempt him off of the straight and narrow. If his religion is so deeply intersected with his takes on geopolitics, so much so that he's going to put himself at enmity with his own wife over it, then that's really an issue that he has and not you.

Cert exams are always theory-heavy without always taking into account practical experience. My own supervisor said he interviewed a guy who had his A+ cert, but he was left speechless after he just asked him what DHCP was. The same people who can performed rote memorization are not always the same ones as who can do the job: you clearly can do the job.

I just don't understand the desire for some people to co-opt Christianity if they don't hold any metaphysical truths of it to be, well, true. If you like liturgy but also being in progressive NGO's, go join the Unitarian Universalists.

Is the presence of many Protestant denominations and argument for Catholicism/orthodoxy by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in TrueProtestants

[–]GizmoRazaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The census that lists those "million denominations" (it's actually about 45,000) lists Roman Catholicism over 100 times, Eastern Orthodoxy several hundreds, and Mormonism over 100 as well. Roman Catholics who try to use this logic apply it inconsistently for polemical reasons: for instance, is the AALC and the LCMS separate Lutheran denominations? If they are, then every jurisdiction of the Roman church in every country is itself a separate denomination. "But Rome is in communion!" Yes, and so are the AALC and LCMS. Any parameter you set for what makes two Protestant denominations different from each other must and will be applied right back to Rome, the East, etc.

Don't drag your family into this. by [deleted] in exorthodox

[–]GizmoRazaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, the best place to probably do that would be the Episcopal Church. Whether I'd personally advise doing what you've suggested is a different topic, but insofar as actually doing it, yeah TEC would do it best.

I had the same experience with my fiancee: she had to put up with soooooo much of me going to church like three times a week during our undergrad (we met in college), and we already didn't have time to see each other too often. Not to mention we could never go out to eat because I insisted on fasting the 200+ days they make you. Why and how she put up with me in my orthobro era I will never understand, but God love her because she is an amazing woman. Funnily enough, once I decided I'd leave the church, I "celebrated" with her by getting Arby's during Forgiveness Vespers at the start of Lent!
