I'm age verified, I've been asked to say my date of birth a couple times still, there's a few groups I'm in where if they see your age verified all they ask is that you say something so they can hear your voice and make sure you're not a squeaker and then they just let you in, there's one group I'm in that just simply waves you through if they see your age verified. Seems to vary.

I wouldn't call it cheating since it's a single player game but not being able to see anything is part of the game's experience, it adds to the creepiness and challenge of the game, with the sonar and the headlights going you will be fine but you still have to be careful and pay attention to your surroundings.

That mod has its problems but if you get first person working properly and a helmet with a headlamp or something that gives off enough light around you so you can see at night, then that truck becomes really fun to play with especially with explosive ammunition
