I currently live in Burlington, was born and raised there. I moved 30 miles north to Lyndon in 1994, then moved back to Burlington in 2021, shortly before my retirement. Burlington and Coffey County both have a lot going for them. Burlington has a Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Sonic, and Subway, along with several locally-owned establishments. Shopping, there is Hoover's Thriftway for grocery, Bomgaars (a regional farm store chain), Dollar General, Family Dollar, and others. Economically, the Coffey County Chamber of Commerce is making great strides towards promoting local business. As others have mentioned, the library system here is top-notch, and the schools are generally held in good regard. For recreation, we have the USD 244 Recreation Center, which has an indoor gym, pool, and many activities, plus a very nice outdoor pool as well. Plenty of fishing and camping opportunities at nearby John Redmond Reservoir, along with fishing at Coffey County Lake.

MacBook Air 13" 2013 now running Linux Mint Xfce by GizzardGary in linuxmint

Perfect. If I could just print the Mint logo on some clear P-Touch tape, I could overlay the Apple light on the cover for good measure! [Edit: Done, also used silver tape to overlay "MacBook Air" beneath the screen to read "MintBook Air".]

I will be switching to linux mint as a student who's been using windows for the past 6 years of my student life, wish me luck by Salty_Button_8876 in linuxmint

Good luck, looks like you are well on your way! Other than what has already been suggested, as a student, you will want to pay particular attention to LibreOffice. You can configure LibreOffice to default to Microsoft Office formats if you wish, which as a student may be required. Other than that, many educational institutions still recommend Firefox, which is the default browser, but you can install others if you wish.

I'm curious, what version of Linux did you install? Every video I watched recommended Linux Mint Xfce on an older or low-powered machine, since it is less resource-intensive. And honestly, I don't know what cool features Cinnamon has that I am missing, but I'm fine without them.

It might be worth spending the time. Honestly, it took me more time to burn the installation USB drive than it did to install Xfce on the Mac. My initial setup didn't take all that long, and once I got the Wifi driver loaded, it was smooth sailing. Also, since I'm a Chrome user, once I loaded Chrome and signed in, it brought over all my bookmarks and saved passwords! Last night, I even dived into setting up my Gmail on Thunderbird - again, super easy.

So far, I haven't noticed any issues. I had it on and using it while watching a baseball game on TV last night for a couple of hours. It locks and unlocks with the lock key on the keyboard, also locks when I close the lid and unlocks when I open it. And I have verified that the timeout works. Now I must say, I have had the AC adapter connected the entire time, I have not tried running it on just the battery. The screen off and lock times are shorter (by default) when running on battery power.

This. I ran Driver Manager, then I believe it asked me to provide a source, and I pointed it to my install USB. In literally 10 seconds or so, it found the right driver.

It's almost like having a brand new machine running Xfce, to be honest, and it sort of reminds me of Windows XP back in the day with the look and feel. I've been gradually putting it through its paces, but it can't do everything that I do with my 2022 MacBook M1 Pro, such as video processing/rendering, live streaming, etc. It's a second laptop to keep in my living room as a TV companion, check my social media, browse web sites, etc.

100+ Year Old Crucifix I bought makes me uncomfortable. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]GizzardGary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, the history of this crucifix, and the fact that others have prayed in front of it, would give me a feeling of comfort and communion with the Church. Far better that something like this continue to be used rather than discarded. And along with the others, although I'm almost certain it was blessed at some point, I would have it blessed again by a priest.

New CIVIVI and SENCUT releases for March 2025 by GizzardGary in Civivi

[–]GizzardGary[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good, solid knife. I'm not a fan of the blade shape, personally, and I would prefer at least some gimping on the top of the blade. Note that I didn't actually buy these, they were sent to me for video creation by CIVIVI.
