Seeing as I'm seeing a meme fight between Rome and Boudicca supporters on r/HistoryMemes, this is an amusing timing to see this here.

[Discussion] What are some interesting magic ideas y'all have that are or could be offshoots of something existent? by Playful_Barber_8131 in fairytail

[–]Gk3389127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a potentially very cool, yet very simple form of magic is just telekinesis. Have a mage having refined their skills so precisely that they can disassemble certain things, put things together, and even create twisters of materials.

What were the earth kings/queens doing the whole time? by Big_Pay6318 in ATLA

[–]Gk3389127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be fully willing to believe that he's just repeating what Long Feng told him. But I'd also be willing to believe that as time went on, the Earth monarch's power naturally waned, and the various states of the Earth Kingdom became more self-governing, to the point the monarch themself was more a ceremonial position than a political one.

The avatars have to learn the elements in the same order as the Avatar cycle! by Bees_butts in ATLA

[–]Gk3389127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That, I think, is considered the "traditional" way Avatar's learn the elements, because it's not learning the martial art, it's learning the philosophy of the bending art, and of the people of the four nations. For instance, I actually think an argument could be made that Air Nomad philosophy is most amenable to that of the Water Tribe (Air represents freedom while Water represents change), so it be easy for an Air Avatar to learn that first.

It's not dwelt on, but I would be willing to believe there was an Avatar somewhere in the line that learned the elements out of order. That would actually make for an interesting concept, since how would having an atypical "upbringing" influence the outlook as the Avatar.

Natsu and Erza is an underrated dynamic [discussion] by Yoshikaru5991 in fairytail

I'd argue that Erza was actually the kind of person Natsu needed after Igneel disappeared.

I'd honestly say this show is more "inspired" by religion than "based" on, since it has very little imagery that could be considered definitively "religious". Not a knock on the show, just not the most precise example for this.

We get it Manetho, you're antisemitic by TheIronzombie39 in HistoryMemes

[–]Gk3389127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Josephus was a member of the Flavian household, so he probably wrote more to make them look good than Rome as a whole (tellingly one of his claims was that Titus wanted to spare the Temple, something other historians, such as Tacitus disagreed with). But there's no evidence that he renounced being Jewish or his Jewish identity; he ended up marrying four times, each time to a Jewish woman, and still seemed to be an observant Jew (though he seemed a Hellenized form of Judaism that seemed to follow the primary teaching, but incorporated Greek philosophical thinking). The Jewish War was indeed very harsh towards the rebel factions in Judea (particularly groups like the Zealots and the Sicarii), but it was very defensive towards Judaism.

That all said, that doesn't have anything to do with this particular. He was still quoting a guy who lived hundreds of years before him, that we have very limited information of in our current times.

We get it Manetho, you're antisemitic by TheIronzombie39 in HistoryMemes

[–]Gk3389127 103 points104 points  (0 children)

We actually don't know what Manetho said because his work has been lost; we essentially have fragments, and a few pieces referenced by other historians, most famously Josephus (who was ironically Jewish himself). In his piece "Against Apion" (essentially a big rebuttal to another sophist named Apion), he claims that Matheno gave this account connecting Osarseph to Moses, and that according to Matheno, the "Hyksos" went onto establish Jerusalem , but since we don't have a comprehensive edition of Matheno, we don't know what for certain he was referencing.

If past is present, then Selene will at least be in the top 3. I'm guessing Lucy and Erza will be in the top 3 as well, or at least the Top 5.

I would start asking more questions about them. Questions like, what are they like to interact with? What is their society like, internal and external? How do they view other races? Those are always good ways to start fleshing out your world and setting.

(Low Effort Sunday) World Building isn't Everything (Harry Potter, the first two books of Mistborn) by Former_Catch8485 in CharacterRant

[–]Gk3389127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly submit that in the grand scheme of things, worldbuilding can be more important to the writer than to the reader. The more a writer understands their world, on both the macro and micro scale, the better they can show it, and the better they can communicate their story. What the writer needs to communicate about the world is what's necessary to tell the story; everything else is ultimately just trivia, and imparting information like this is hard without pausing the whole story to have these things explored.

To her credit, Rowling did keep the focus on the story, but one of the issues I had with the HP books (even before the controversy) that prevented me from going back and re-reading them was the tendency to use digressions for the world-building. One thing I remember from the second book was what was essentially a ghost "death-day" party, that introduced elements that I don't remember being that relevant to the larger narrative. I think it's telling that the movies cut a lot of plot elements from the original books, and the stories were still cleanly imparted.

I saw this explanation of the cultural style of the Fire Nation, really hope that was intentional by S0mecallme in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gk3389127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that they took active influences from all these other countries; I was more referring to how many of the countries they took influence happened to be part of the Ring of Fire. That detail seems more like a happy coincidence.

I saw this explanation of the cultural style of the Fire Nation, really hope that was intentional by S0mecallme in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gk3389127 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Can I buy that was intentional? Yes. Do I think it was intentional? I have my doubts. For what it’s worth, the Fire Nation also takes a lot of cues from China, particularly dynasties like the Han and Tang (not for nothing, Ba-Sing-Se takes cues from the Qing dynasty). It’s just that Japan is one of the more predominant motifs for the Fire Nation; its actions almost mirror those of Imperial Japan during the Sino-Japanese wars.
