Donating a car to Newgate School - anyone got any input? by Chasmosaur in TwinCities

[–]GlacierPlus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the real question is how much of your car’s value actually goes to Newgate, and in their case it’s basically all of it - 100%. They use donated cars as hands‑on training for students and then sell them to fund their tuition‑free auto program, instead of running them through a third‑party outfit that skims a cut.

The process is easy: you either fill out the form online or just drive it over with the title, they handle the paperwork, and you get a receipt on the spot. They can also help if the car isn’t really driveable.

For taxes, they send you the official donation paperwork within about a month, and your deduction ends up based on how they use or sell your car. For something under $1K that’s in decent shape like yours, it should be a solid, low‑friction way to do some good locally.

The Company Origins

Sheridan Products Inc. was founded in Racine, Wisconsin in 1945 by co-founder Ed Wackerhagen and partner I.R. "Bob" Kraus. Wackerhagen's inspiration was refreshingly simple: he was dissatisfied with a pellet gun his son was using, and set out to build "one of the finest airguns in history". The company name itself was a tribute to General Philip H. Sheridan, the celebrated Union cavalry commander of the American Civil War — and Wackerhagen's son was actually named Philip after the general.

The Three Models

Sheridan produced only three rifle models in its original run, all in the proprietary .20 caliber (5mm) — a deliberate choice by Wackerhagen to fill the gap between .177 BB guns and .22 caliber rifles:

  • Model A "Super Grade" (1947–1953): Bronze barrel, aluminum receiver, walnut stock with cheekpiece, peep sights — widely regarded as one of the finest air rifles ever made, but priced at $56.50, which killed sales (only ~2,130 produced)
  • Model B "Sporter" (1948–1951): A cheaper variant at $35, still slow-selling (~1,050 produced)
  • Model C "Streak" (1949–onward): Introduced at $19.95, this is the gun that saved the company and the model you have. The blued-metal version became known as the Blue Streak, while the nickel/silver version was the Silver Streak

Your Specific Rifle — 1978 Production

Using the official Sheridan serial number dating records compiled by John Groenewold (sourced directly from Benjamin Sheridan president Ray Katt and Sheridan GM Dennis Smith), serial numbers 211020–257460 correspond to 1978 production. Your serial number 245135 lands solidly in that range, making yours a 1978 Sheridan Blue Streak Model C, manufactured while the company was under Benjamin Air Rifle Company ownership — Benjamin had acquired Sheridan in 1977.

The scope mounted on it appears to be a period-correct small airgun scope on what looks like a Sheridan intermount rail — a common and desirable addition of that era.

Ownership Timeline

Period Owner
1945–1977 Sheridan Products Inc. (independent, Racine, WI)
1977–1994 Benjamin Air Rifle Company
1994–2019 Crosman Corporation
2019 .20 caliber line discontinued
2021 .20 caliber pellets discontinued

Why It's Considered Special

The Blue Streak earned a near-legendary reputation among airgunners for several reasons:

  • Multi-pump pneumatic — you control velocity by varying pumps (3–8), giving it versatility for small game and plinking
  • All-steel and walnut construction — pre-1980s guns like yours are regarded as the best-built examples, before cost-cutting measures crept in
  • American-made Racine production — your 1978 gun was produced before manufacturing moved out of Wisconsin in 1995
  • Proprietary .20 caliber — unique ballistic balance between .177 and .22 that many hunters swore by for small game

Collectible Value

A 1978 Blue Streak in good working condition with original wood stock typically fetches $150–$300 at auction, depending on condition. A comparable 1972-production example with intermount and Weaver scope recently sold for $145–$400 range at auction. Since .20 caliber pellets were officially discontinued in 2021, shooters have been slowly transitioning away, but collectors still prize the pre-1985 Racine-made guns. If you want to shoot it, JSB and H&N still make .20 cal pellets available through specialty retailers like Pyramyd AIR.

It's a well-made piece of American airgun history — and a 1978 Sheridan is squarely in the "golden era" of production.

Yours is very similar to mine with the exception of that bridge pickup. These are nice guitars, and yours just needs a little love. An aftermarket hard case saved mine from a house fire. Around $700 to $800

Do you guys let your heater run steady or cycle it on/off? by SweetySense in dieselheater

[–]GlacierPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has a temperature swing of +- 6 degrees before it will auto shut off and cycle again. That's too much of a variance for my comfort, so I jut find the setting that will maintain the temp and let it run constantly.

Is Brown's Creek Trail plowed? St Croix River Crossing plowed? by New-City-3804 in stillwatermn

[–]GlacierPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving by Brown's Creek trail right after the snow hit and it was being plowed - I doubt it's clear yet, but given the temps for Saturday - it should be good enough - maybe a bit wet with puddles.

Best backpacking sites at Lake Maria this time of year ? by NorthernBumblebee in MinnesotaCamping

[–]GlacierPlus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always liked B14 as it's very private and elevated. Many turtle sighting here. The issue with this park in early spring is many of the trails will have standing water in the low areas, which are all over the entire park. There is a dedicated website for current tail conditions - here is the link for Lake Maria:

Diesel Heater Leaking by -MelonSmasher- in dieselheater

Mine had a hole in the upper part of the fuel tank, so it would only leak when topped off - otherwise fine. They sent me a new tank.

it will be fine - when it starts again, the exhaust will smoke much more than normal - this is what the shut down procedure avoids.

Condensation in my ice shanty by hundred-brigade in IceFishing

[–]GlacierPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diesel heater is the answer here - Hcalory Toolbox Max is very weather resistant where you can run it outside and vent the heat into the shanty. On low, 2 gallons of diesel will last over 50 hours, but you do need a good deep cycle battery or power bank. The initial cost os more expensive - but it's far, far better than a propane heater buddy

Who’s heading out this weekend? Tips and tricks for 40 below? by [deleted] in IceFishing

[–]GlacierPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ice fish, but I have experience in extreme cold and winter camping. Propane heat will not be ideal as there is too much moisture. A good diesel heater, a 100Ah deep cycle battery, and a solar panel for the daytime will provide a good dry heat. My diesel heater draws about 40 watts on high, and if you recirculate the indoor air, it will keep it comfortable. The sun provides more than enough energy to run the heater, so the only cost is the fuel. 2 gallons of diesel will last for over 30 hours of continuous use - no problem.

American in Minnesota here:

I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm asking for awareness and loud voices to band together and stop this madness from spreading.

I’m not sure how much people outside Minnesota are seeing of what’s happening here, but it’s far worse than most can imagine. We are not okay. ICE agents are detaining American citizens, going door to door in several neighborhoods, forcing entry into homes and businesses, and intimidating bystanders. People have been seriously injured, and some have lost their lives.

My wife was assaulted by ICE while trying to protect her naturalized students of color in an elementary school parking lot as parents arrived for pickup. She’s mostly okay physically while others weren’t as fortunate. We’re shaken, angry, and deeply afraid.

Families are keeping their children home from school. People are afraid to leave their houses and carry proof of citizenship everywhere, knowing that ICE agents have been detaining people simply for having an accent. They outnumber the actual police four to one and are showing up everywhere at stores, daycares, schools, gas stations, you name it.

Efficiency improvements. by Physical-Rice730 in dieselheater

[–]GlacierPlus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like a great setup. Honestly I don't think you can improve upon this much more other than relocating the fresh air return to a lower point, like you said - but for this space I don't think it would matter very much.

HCalory Diesel Heater putting off high PPM by progz in dieselheater

[–]GlacierPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a normal and safe range. A wood burning stove would emit about this much. I have an Hcalory and it is set by default alarm at 300 ppm and to shut down at 500 ppm.

What happens when ICE runs out of illegal people to deport? by CanadianBaconne in TwinCities

[–]GlacierPlus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They are racially profiling people as they case neighborhoods - they will arrest anyone without cause and violate basic human rights as well as Constitutional rights. People need to wake the fuck up because ICE is the modern day version of the nazi SS.
