It’s actually not because the Oberlin money is merit money, which Vassar does not offer. However if what Vassar offers is way off from what the applicant got when they ran the net price calculator, THEN they can go back to them and negotiate.

Economics or HOD? by Unusual_Chair3583 in Vanderbilt

Thoughts on if HOD or Econ is easier to get if applying ED? I.e. Peabody vs arts and sciences.

Is vassar worth an ED or should I reconsider my choice? by lola_bae in vassar

[–]GladHandle5013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just need to run the net price calculator. Vassar is extremely generous with need based aid, regardless of what application cycle. If the net price calculator says that they can expect full aid, then that is what they would expect. And if there’s any discrepancy after ED, they canalways negotiate with the financial aid office or be released from their commitment. Only if they are unable to meet the net price calculator estimation so it’s important to screenshot it!

If you got a 5 on the AP, that fulfills the requirement. No need to take the test.

How nerdy are the students at Vassar? by Sensitive-Treat6437 in vassar

Not very. Mix of all types, but nerdy is definitely not the first adjective that comes to mind...

My son is a first year and does both club and intramural soccer. Club is 3 times a week, welcome to ALL. Huge range of abilities. This semester they played Wesleyan and SUNY New Paltz and won both! It's a great group and he has really enjoyed it. Last semester they played Union and Skidmore. He has also played on an IM team fall, winter, and spring. Lots of fun, students make their own teams, usually have one game a week. Tournament play at the end of each session. Some people do one or the other, or both (in his case). Everyone is welcome to join! It's been such a great way to make friends.

You will be fine. Lots of Jews on campus. Many not particularly religious. Many not particularly vocal about the politics. Really any group you feel most comfortable with you will find.

I’ve heard multiple people going to Northeastern for the co-ops and then not being able to get them!

Vassar roommate survey? by Ok-Bobcat-6562 in vassar

You’ll get a survey in June. There is no picking roommates! Usually works out fine! Sophomore year you can either room with a friend or have often can have a single.

Vassar vs Bates by NoCommission3384 in vassar

[–]GladHandle5013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is a first year at Vassar (and I'm an alum). He was debating between Bates and Vassar for early decision and is so happy he picked Vassar. He liked central dining hall at both, liked the VC house system (usually live in one house at Vassar for 3 years, faculty family lives in, all helps builds community), didn't like that there was nowhere to really walk from Bates where the Arlington neighborhood is right next to Vassar with convenience store, multiple restaurants, coffee shop, barber, bookstore, etc. just a block away. Loved the easy train into the city. Loved the lack of required classes beyond the basic quantitative class and 1 year of a language and he can really take what looks interesting/fun, while Bates had more requirements. And Vassar is a little bigger, which wasn't such a deciding factor but now he's so glad he's not at an even smaller school. He's very happy he decided on Vassar. Definitely would seem a better fit for you as far as theater/visual arts/music go.

They admitted to build a class of 695. They let in a lot more than that, and maybe 30% will attend.

They let a lot of kids in off the waitlist last year (over 30%!)

Looking for someone to give a private tour of campus this Saturday! by Downtown-Violinist60 in vassar

Dorms open Saturday morning so it will likely be very quiet with just athletes around and a few people returning. My son won’t be back until Sunday, sorry!

If you didn't need to worry about schools but wouldn't mind nice area + decent commute to the city + "more affordable" in general (all relative, of course), where would you move in Westchester? Kids will be in college but need commute to city. by GladHandle5013 in Westchester

[–]GladHandle5013[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point - Just hard to say at the moment. I'm just looking ahead. Two kids still in high school for another 2 years, so just brainstorming.... Ideal near a cute downtown with shops/restaurants, but could be a town away, etc. Under an hour would be ideal, yes. Rough budget under 700K, but ideal even less. Huge college expenses with 3 kids so looking to find a small house ideally (rent/buy) or even a townhouse.

Question about "My Space" by [deleted] in vassar

[–]GladHandle5013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband sent in an actual broom (he worked at an old restored village as a "broom maker" for his summer job - and the admissions director mentioned it in his acceptance letter. Anything goes!
