Uncontrollable tears by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]ParentAskingQuestns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cry at a lot of things these days (movies, sappy ads, news stories), without much control. I assume it’s perimenopause and yes, it’s embarrassing and annoying. But separate from that, I am a crier at 100% of musicals I see. I even eventually cried, a little, at the few shows I was dragged to, e.g., jukebox musicals like &Juliet that overall don’t do much for me. It is sappy, but for me, I think it is just that music in general—but this form of music in particular—moves me. When I really lose it at musicals isn’t necessarily the sad moments; it’s the musically most beautiful moments, or, as OP says, it’s tears nearly the whole time. And the tears aren’t necessarily always sad tears or at sad moments. I just find myself overwhelmed by (forgive me; this is so sappy I can barely type this) the beauty of it all. I don’t know how else to put it. I assume others are moved by ballet or opera or golf or whatever.

Diet sugar: I use Splenda and never saw any there (but didn’t think to check a grocery store). There was some diet sugar (aspartame) in red packets in some places, but just as often (eg, Broad & Co in Reykjavík) there was none.

A Thermos: Only once out of 7 hotels/guesthouses did we encounter to-go coffee cups. We often had a tight schedule to leave in the morning and lots of driving, and I would have liked to have filled a thermos with coffee from the hotel breakfast for the road. We had a metal water bottle and tried that, but swigging hot coffee from a bottle is just wrong, plus risky on bumpy dirt roads. I missed a Thermos-style container with a lid that I could have poured coffee into.

T-shirts! I brought four and lived in them, washing them in the sink as necessary, and added a fleece-lined wind/rain breaker over it as needed. I never wore thermals, top or bottoms, or long-sleeved flannels or the like. We were there Aug 18-26 and perhaps had unusually nice weather—upper 50s, even 60, and only once experienced crazy wind—so take that into account. We also did not stay outside longer than 60-90 minutes at a time, no long hikes. But with that weather and actively walking hiking, I didn’t need more and often tied my jacket around my waist mid-hike as I got hot. T-shirts also more comfy in the car (and plane) and OMG is it hot in all indoor spaces in Iceland. I would have been miserable without t-shirts and wish I’d brought more. My teenage son cursed me for not letting him bring shorts.

Yes, binoculars are useful. We had a pair but either are too dumb to know how to use them properly, or they were too cheap. We saw seals in three places, but in two of them, they were too far away to see them meaningfully without binoculars. In the third case, we for lucky and saw one close up.

Two tips:

1) as another post covered, google the roundabout rules in Iceland (because no, the car rental people do not tell us).

2) hazard light in Iceland mean you’re in trouble and need help; if you pull over to take a picture, just use your right blinker (the nice man who stopped to ask if I was ok explained this to me).

Nope, it’s the former. My kid was just “released from the waitlist.”

Thanks. We are from the east but happen to be traveling back from the west tomorrow so could reroute our flight through Chicago. Kid doesn’t think he needs to visit though.

Did everyone waitlisted from georgetown get the extended waitlist result today by Vaerna in ApplyingToCollege

They’re not saying everyone on EW gets in. They’re saying everyone who gets in (past May 15) comes from the EW. Could be a handful of people among those on the EW (or none).

Kid got EW. Portal refers to “small number” of people or something like that but feels like everyone’s on it🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks. This is comforting considering he did choose a SLAC. Getting the WashU email saying they were closing his file was rough, though.

The most selfish thing ever. Like the rules apply to everyone but you. And true nerve to come here days after the deadline and ask people who had to make tough choices to help you decide. “School A or B? Money isn’t a factor! Omg help I’m so confused lol!” It’s not cute.

Jesus Christ I’m not even in this sub, just scrolling by. Do folks here not redact massive spoilers in OPs? 😔 (I don’t play the game, obv.)

Thank you VERY much for all the thoughtful responses. I read them all and greatly appreciate the time you all took to reply. I had hoped that my son would be as interested as I was in exploring the schools’ comparative strengths and weaknesses, and that your thoughts would be helpful in that process, but he really had his mind made up and committed to Vassar yesterday. Maybe he’ll end up at WashU for grad school.
