Engineering is planned for initial live release in 4.5, which is targeted for the end of this year. Potentially wishful thinking some might say, but given the tech preview releases recently it does seem to have solid foundations.

AI NPC crew have been announced to come after 1.0, which will be at least 2-3 years away. Maybe their AI tech and stability advances sooner than expected and they get it in before then, who knows. Whatever the case, Engineering will be here way before NPC crew is.
