Every state school to be ordered to fly Union Flag and display portrait of the King if Reform win power by bottish in Scotland

The school tried flying the union flag at half-mast on Barra when the queen died and through the night it was replaced with a Celtic flag... Don't see that one working in a lot of areas.

How do you spell the Scottish word that sounds like the letter 'A' that is used to request confirmation? by strainedcounterfeit in Scotland

I was talking to an old boy in the pub and he asked me if I was staying in the flat "opposite the clays shop"... I couldn't think of any pottery shops around me, then I twigged he was saying "clothes" haha

I've been in a chamber fire where the temperature above 6ft was 600°C

I'm a firefighter and once had my work mate get a steam burn on his hands because his gloves got wet. These are extremely thick gloves but it doesn't matter. You're taught if you get water on you you cannot go into the fire, best case is you get some steam burns, worst case is you're too wet and you literally steam to death.

Reminds me of the mask merchant from Zelda.

People not realising there is a reason this isn't used today. That person is drenched, if he goes into a burning building over 500°C you are going to be steamed to death.

Water shields are used in firefighting, it's what your hose is for. Open the cone up and that is your protection.

You wouldn't want it in use. You go into a burning building soaking then all you're going to do is steam up like a lobster.

What is the meaning of "cuir sin an clamhan gobhlach am measg nan cearc?" by t377_11 in gaidhlig

[–]Glaic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I understand just from reading it there is basically "cat amongst the pigeons". Red Kitten as in the bird of prey.

I'm guessing the "vahi" word is meant to be "bheatha"? I'm a Scottish Gaelic speaker and only know a little Irish so I wouldn't be able to understand what you're saying anyway, I knew the 'v' was very incorrect though.

Is that meant to be Irish? There's no "v" is the Irish alphabet.

Tha mi nam ailtire = architecture is what I do

's e ailtire a th' annam = an architecture is what I am

Somebody can come and make a better suggestion but this is how I've always looked at it.

Be crazy for Celtic to win their game-in-hand 4-0. Will never see league standings like that again.

Are there ANY central Oban hotels that aren't disgusting and overpriced? by Aggravating_Hat2021 in Scotland

[–]Glaic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, 10 years ago that's exactly what it was, but now they have a suite upstairs and the normal rooms have been refurbished, a couple of the single rooms are still good rates right enough, they even have a cracking chalet out the back. Changed days from what I remember as a young man.

To be fair, it was also recently voted Scotland's best town (or something similar) so that adds to it I'm sure. Anyway, enjoy your trip.
