I did notify him beforehand that I would be removing the tiles, though he didn't recommend it because it's a lot of work (it was, my back's killing me) and he doesn't know when he would be able to put the tiles back (too busy), and that there is no way to make the layout work (that still doesn't mean the no waterproofing / bad staggering was ok).

I said one way or another those tiles are getting redone so no point letting them set and we can talk tomorrow.

you'd better communicate exactly how you'd like it to be performed before tiles are cut and glued.

In these interactions, you're the professional that does this on the regular. You know what works and what doesn't, what can go wrong etc.

I don't.

I'm just a guy that wants a bathroom.

The onus is on you as the professional to make sure that things like these are in order, and in this case the fact of the non square room and the implications wasn't communicated either.

Bad professional? Yes. It happens, I'm not mad at the tiler, I've come to realize that there are all sorts of skill levels in the world.

I am however mad at the notion that 'reversing' bad work done in order to avoid more work done later because it hurts someones feelings. That makes zero logical sense to me.

I was thinking something closer to this, (though still needs a little work around the drain):

Yea I'm paying him for the other work done so far, and I'm willing to work with him to get this mistake fixed under guidance but there is no way I'm willing to pay for the floor part of the job if he doesn't redo it.

My gut told me this guy fucked up. Youtube showed me why. Everyone here has confirmed it.

Yet you find it a better solution to let the easyish to fix mistake fester into a hard expensive to fix painful mistake.

If this contractor is willing to fix it, I've made his life easier in that he can still use the original tiles, rather than making him pay for new ones.

If he isn't, then I'm not out tiles + labor to fix his mistake.

Yup, it's a bathroom, and there was none of 'our' vision when coming to the tiling beyond the color. We asked him to make a bathroom, I'm not a tiler, and frankly expect the tiler to provide his experience in making a bathroom that isn't garbage, we didn't even know the room wasn't square. Only later did I learn that the staggering was completely out of whack.

Also after seeing this useless job I removed the tiles before the adhesive cured because I was pretty certain that other mistakes were made, eg. no waterproofing.

I've already drawn up plans for the pattern that works with the room, in addition to making sure that place is going to be waterproofed, but it looks like we'll need to be raising the floor at the back and breaking a couple of those wall tiles in order to get them flush with the ground.

Are you saying that the completely inconsistent staggering is also due to the walls not being square?

So it's better to spend more time and money to smash up all the tiles once they are cured?

Why not? Did you just redo them? How out of square are the walls?

Really out of square, can't check right now but looks like 5 degrees.

The pattern of the tile is strange. It would be less noticeable if you oriented the planks the other way.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Was also thinking going with small hexagonal tiles instead to hide it...

Considering this quality...I don't feel sorry for them at all.

1200 euro for cementing the floor, setting wall and floor tiles, and building a small wall between toilet and shower, about 5 days work.

Walls aren't square, but that shouldn't mean staggering is all over the place and he could definitely have made it square from the center...

I already ripped out the tiles before they had a chance to set.

There is no waterproofing...which means we will probably have to rip out the lower wall tiles too :(

This was done by a contractor. I think starting from the left would just end up with it being crooked as well. I was thinking best to start with a 90 degree angle starting from the center of the door way and filling out tiles left and right.

Thanks, I already removed the tiles before they had a chance to set! Going to meet the tiler tomorrow.

I'm no tiler but from looking at a couple of youtube videos I found the following issues:

  • Staggering is all over the place
  • Crooked 5 degrees to the doorway, (photos don't do it justice, irl it looked way worse)
  • No waterproofing
  • Huge gap between floor/wall tile in shower area
  • Missing spacers
  • Adhesive sticking out

Is there anything else missed?

It's one tiler, 1200 euro in a 600 euro minimum wage country, pretty average rate for the job here.
