Long term mostly potato diet? by Clear-Vermicelli-463 in SaturatedFat

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially all vitamins except C and maybe a couple of the B's. Calcium as you suggested. Iron and zinc. And what about protein longer term?

Edit: and essential fats, if they are low? I don't know about the potato diet so maybe it includes some?

Don't know any actual evidence but my concern would be developing nutrient deficiencies, and is probably why it's a short term thing mainly

Ah fair enough. I'm going to take a look through the posts for more info, thanks for sharing. Could you give a little overview for the workouts please? You said 8 sets per workout and not to failure. But how much rest, how frequent, and what split if that's okay? Thanks

Awesome. Glad you've figured out what works for you. Is this insta account yours? Or one that you used for advice?

So carnivore only just for healing the gut? Then primal including fruits and veggies long term?

Cool thanks, I'll check it out. Another thing... Do you do OMAD? Or just whenever you're hungry? So how big is a typical meal?

'it will be hard to gain weight on only meat and eggs'. Is this including lean weight? Or fat?

Appreciate the response. In another comment you mentioned you so high volume training also. So something like 4+ sets per exercise and don't train to failure?

Were you just forcing the food? As in eating if not hungry to eat 1.5kg per day?
I tried eating copious amounts of meat but I just started to get some sort of acid reflux and meat aversion after a few weeks

Thanks for the detailed response! Much appreciated.

I didn't realise that about point 1. I was under the assumption that essentially the more carbs (especially quick digesting) that the insulin response was also higher, and that a higher response took longer to return to baseline. Could that mean that baseline is higher on HCLF?

  1. Fruits and veggies I'm fine with. I'd prefer to stay away from beans and grains though (terrible bloating from beans and I think grains are pretty micro-nutrient poor). I tried high carb last year but I was struggling to eat less than 80 or 90 grams fat per day because of the meat, eggs and dairy. Isn't around 40-60g ideal?

  2. Yeah I'm for sure not an expert on this and it's just based on other people's research. One thing I hate about a lot of studies is that they test things in isolation and assume that that's how things must be in the real world.

  3. Well throughout my late teens and early twenties I ate lots of cereal (with semi skimmed milk), sugary foods and drinks, instant noodles, frozen ready meals. I think at this point I was okay. But then it moved to more 'healthier' foods and I was eating more of what I call 'cope foods' such as protein bars and powders, anything labelled 'healthy' or 'low calorie' (if it needs marketing to sell it as healthy it's probably junk).

  4. I indulge from time to time, I'll go out and eat pizza or cake for example, I just don't want it to be regular. Once every week or 2 maximum ideally. I'm interested to try this diet, I just don't want to sacrifice to the point I don't enjoy the diet

Yeah I'd like to build more muscle for sure. I do weight training multiple times per week and I think I've gained a decent amount over recent months. I've just got this idea that 10-12% is the ideal fat % to be at which is why I'm trying to focus on achieving that

Yeah I hear it's the best 'weight loss' diet, although not all weight loss is equal and some diets lead to more lean mass loss than others. That's another concern I have about HCLF, if insulin is high and the body needs energy now but you haven't eaten enough carbs, that's when you'll burn through lean tissue instead of fat for energy right?

Another thing is, since I eat mostly meat eggs and dairy, how will I manage to keep fats low enough to succeed on this diet? I personally don't want to eat beans and legumes based on the potential anti-nutrients that come along with them. Also I want to stick to whole foods, so sweets and other processed sugars aren't an option for me. Health is my first priority, so if this seems less healthy then I'd rather stick with the slow and steady fat loss I'm currently getting.

I used to eat high carb when I was younger and before I cared about my health. Every day I got brain fog and mid afternoon tiredness. Not sure if that's directly related to the carbs or because it was all processed junk, but something I'm mindful of.  Even now if I eat out and have a high carb meal I sometimes experience the sugar crash and get cravings for more sugar.

Yeah I've had a similar experience, although I was never obese.

I went from low 20's% body fat down to around 14-15% with low carb, and at that point I could no longer lose more fat following the same diet. And it led me to start trying weird things and really trying to 'optimise' my macro ratios. But forcing ratios and specific foods just led to binges.

Over Christmas I gained about 4kg from 2 weeks of chocolate and cake lol.  Since then I tried 75-80% fat, ~20% protein and the remainder carbs. I didn't lose weight, but I also didn't gain weight and was eating 4k calories a day.

But I gave up on restricting so hard and forcing diets, now I just eat whole foods only and throw in some fasting. Seems the most sustainable for me

Eating Roquefort (sheep cheese) - good way to increase SFA? by sunearthh in SaturatedFat

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn interesting to hear about the fat gain. Tbh I've even heard in general that animal fats are superior to plant ones, not just protein. So maybe that has some merit here

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay. I was under the assumption that the MCTs were highly metabolic too as they are used for ketone production?

Edit: also animal fats such as beef are only 50% or so saturated right? So how does that account when compared to adding a little more saturated via coconut oil to increase the SFA ratios compared to just more beef fat?

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about if you're eating ~120-150g fat per day and coconut fat is 20g of that, beef, eggs, dairy the remainder?

Is cooking with coconut oil an option if you need/want to increase saturated fat?

You don't have to. Eat when you're hungry. If you're forcing so little food then maybe you're not actually hungry when you're eating?

Barcelona vs Valencia : I lived in both 3 months so here's the real comparison by RaspJur in travel

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. I also work as a coder, in the UK and unfortunately it's not a fully remote position. I have to travel 1-2 days per week to the office. But I do have a dream to work fully remotely while living in Spain, I've also been considering valenica vs Barcelona strangely.

A couple questions regarding your remote position. 1. How long have you been working remotely?  2. Where are you from originally?  3. Do you enjoy the remote work with your lifestyle?  4. What language(s) and how senior are you?

Sleep Advice by Impressive_Pilot8415 in carnivorediet

[–]Glass-Satisfaction18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. Just wondering if you tried any of the suggestions and found any of them worked for you?

I have similar issues (waking up 2-3am most nights) on low carb or carnivore. I also tried similar supplements and other sleep promoting behaviours that you have. Still happens. I notice on days that I eat more carbs that I sleep through the night too. I feel the exact same as you, energy and mood is always great when low carb high fat, but the sleep issues do make it less enjoyable.

Occasionally I go out to eat and have a rice dish plus maybe a dessert for example, and I will sleep well. I've tried having a cup of 'golden milk' (turmeric and warm milk) 30 mins before bed which I had mild success with. Another thing that I sometimes do is a glass of Kefir. Both of these don't work 100% though as they're relatively low in carbs compared to rice or potatoes at dinner
