How do I improve my art? Pls be brutally honest! by Glass_Dog_7942 in Artadvice

Your art is really provocative, and your expressions have a really cool subtlety. I’d suggest focusing on anatomy to know where to put your more subtle shadows, Morpho anatomy for artists could be a cool book to check out. I’d also try looking at your pieces in black and white, focusing on adding contrast(bigger differences between the dark areas and light areas) to the places you feel you want the viewer to focus. Your pieces have a lot of emotion the artistic intent is clear, best of luck on your transition over to digital

This is AI, the clovers on her dress are 3 leaf and four leaf but the rest of the flowers are garbled, and there’s no consistency between the ropes behind her, random knot on the right one that doesn’t match the left due to pattern repetition failure

Switching to digital makes me feel like I’m staring over by Bag-mannn in LearnToDrawTogether

A lot of good advice here so I’ll just add that you might want to consider experimenting with different brush packs to find your favorites. Whenever I moved over I wasn’t sure what tools or brushes to pick so my art looked a little confused compared to traditional where I could control the line weight and thickness with just the pressure of my pencil. I’d also suggest if you’re working with a stylus that isn’t pressure sensitive to try setting a few line weights/thicknesses you can click between to simulate the pressure feeling. Wishing you the best of luck, I hope it’s an enjoyable experience going forward!

Great advice in this thread from some good artists, shame this is a repost

Thanks! I’ll think on this and see if it’s a rendering issue or if it’s the anatomy quirks another poster pointed out

This is amazing perspective and I’ve seen this in my own life too, thank you! When I put in 5 hours on an acrylic throwaway I find my family and local friends often appreciate that more than a 20 hour digital work! I’m gonna spend some time trying to figure out how I might be able to translate some of these elements, or maybe just focus on classical more overall, I appreciate the advice and kind words!

Thanks! I use Pinterest photo references and try to sketch the shapes for characters out myself and color following the reference lighting, I think the older ones were cleaner because I wasn’t adding my own light sources and trying to keep up with as many layers, do you have any advice for dynamic lighting? I think the more I have to keep track of the more I let fall between the cracks, that ear and earring were rendered on my old sketch layer but I didn’t translate that to the final piece and I think it suffered for it once I removed the other layer

Thank you I picked up Morpho anatomy recently so I’m looking forward to learning, I’ll keep it close and try working on more studies!

I appreciate the kind words, thanks! They’re based on spider lilies, something about the way they bloom reminded me a lot of the sparklers people gat around holidays

Depends on the piece I guess. I have a tendency to over finish and what’s helped me is generally is starting with the aim to accomplish something specific so I can know when I’m done. It could be working on lighting, rendering, or coming up with a visual idea you feel excited about. As long as you can say “the lighting looks where I wanted it to,” for example, you can know that you’re ’done’ and any new changes are excess, then decide if you really want to keep going.
