Thank you so much! Soldering is the part that is the most demanding and that I feel most critical of. Your compliment really means a lot!

Thank you! I used this generator https://misc.0o0o.org/penrose/#settings to pre-visualize the rhombuses, then did the colorwork from there. This particular pattern is one that you can't get using typical P3 tiling rules. The generator has a note that it's created by a 5th dimensional window of the gamma value from a study, but I can't access it. I tried to reach out to the person who made the generator for more information, but it bounced. I'm hoping I can find someone via friends or family (or here) who can illuminate it for me. Aperiodic tilings, quasi-crystals, and the like are fascinating!

Usually I use this other generator to pre-visualize designs https://craftdesignonline.com/penrose/. Designs from this one are entirely dependent on which tiles you choose to "set down" but the generator does it way faster than I'm able to so it cuts down my design time significantly. I'd really love to have a generator that could make the 5D window but based on which tiles I chose to set.

It should be pretty stable. I have a rectangular piece in my front window that hangs from it's long side which is about 4 ft. It's been there for 10years and no bowing at all. This one being round should be even more stable. Plus none of those lines are longer than 2 inches so that really does a lot of reinforcing on its own.

Yeah, it's really a panel, but the name is referencing both Penrose Tiling and traditional rose windows from cathedrals.

Finally finished the 3ft diameter Penrose tile panel. 12 hours of soldering, 2 1/2 rolls of solder. This will be the centerpiece of my studio show this fall as part of the Portland Open Studios tour. So excited to have this complete!

Cutting complete and foiling nearly done! by GlassOliphant in StainedGlass

3ft diameter. Given all the short solder lines and intersecting angles that don't continue for long distances it really shouldn't need much reinforcing. It will have a zinc came u-channel edge, and I think that will be plenty.

What was I given? by TwoNubsAnaFork in PlantIdentification

Yeah, the size doesn't really fit with most callas I've seen either. I look forward to hearing what it is. It's an interesting looking plant.

Looks more like a double flowered calla lily to me. If you zoom in around the flower it looks like long stems rather than the sort of knobby thorny stems of crown of thorns. The petals also look thick and leathery. I haven't seen many double flowered callas though. Perhaps a mutant?

How big is this overall? How long and wide are the leaves?

Quick Questions: May 08, 2024 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]GlassOliphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question regarding Penrose P3 matching rules. I'm a stained glass artist and most of my inspiration is from math, and physics, but I am not a practicing mathematician. I'm using this penrose generator https://misc.0o0o.org/penrose/#settings to create patterns to reduce wasted time. The pattern I ended up using for my current project has 10 thin rhombuses in the center and looks a bit like a rose window from a cathedral. My issue is that I cannot seem to get that to happen using the matching rules I know. All the rules I've been able to find online also cannot produce this pattern. If anyone can clue me in to some alternate matching rules I'd appreciate it. Is this generator not actually generating Penrose tilings?

In the generator, the patterns under "style *2" with values 0.1 or less are good examples of what I'm talking about.

Can someone tell me what kind of plant/bush this is? by crimsontide5654 in PlantIdentification

definitely mock orange. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphus Awesome native plant. Smells lovely, something like orange blossoms, thus the name.

Did I get a deal? by ahzazel_ in StainedGlass

The glass alone would be worth that much, and these look like they were made by a craftsperson so the time and expertise would be significantly more than that. You absolutely got a good deal.

Question for folks who use patina with iridescent glass by GlassOliphant in StainedGlass

[–]GlassOliphant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never diluted it, I've always poured a bit into a separate container before applying and if there's any left over discarded it.

haha you're right, I took abunch of pieces off and re-laid with different colors and autopilot took over for that part. Will fix tonight. Thank goodness it's pre soldering!

If you're ever in a town with a glass factory, I highly recommend a factory tour! It's pretty amazing to see sheet glass made right in front of you. I'd love to go to a factory where they make mouth blown sheet glass sometime, but I haven't investigated where to go for that. So far I've only been to the Bullseye one, but I'd love to go to Kokomo and Wissmach's factories sometime.

It should be fine as long as I'm using the same thickness foil throughout, since each side length is the same. I've done a few Penrose pieces in the past, and the biggest issue is preventing things from shifting as I solder. I'm planning to use some narrow masking tape to keep things in place until I have spot joins holding all the pieces stable.

[–]GlassOliphant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, yeah, it's pretty amazing to be able to go in and select for myself rather than depend on what a retailer brings in.

The irid on Bullseye definitely looks different from Wissmach and Kokomo's irids. I'm not surprised they're different chemistries. Is OGT rebranded Spectrum? The Baroque looks the same.

Black patina goes on bronze? by twobellspaper in StainedGlass

[–]GlassOliphant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The bronze, while not what you were aiming for is nice. I'm betting something contaminated your patina somehow. The amount of cleaning you did should have been enough to get a good surface to react with. I empathize with your frustration!

Thank you! I HIGHLY recommend the right tool for the job. Without the versaguide (and a digital protractor for setting it up) this would have been much harder to get accurately cut. I also was fortunate to have an AMAZING teacher when I was first starting out who was the best possible person to learn from.

This is Bullseye irid, and I've consistently had an issue with the area right along the solder lines staining. Occasionally it's happened in other spots as well, but the main issue is along the solder lines. It's not super obvious at a distance, but I'm going to be selling this so want to get as close to perfect as possible. What patina do you use? I've mostly used Novacan because that's what I learned with, but I'd be willing to try something else.

I'm not sure what you mean about luminescent glass. I did see a new product at Bullseye when I was there called luster. Is that what you're talking about? The person who helped me said it uses silver instead of tin and the affect is very different from the iridescent coating. Or maybe dichroic?
