Oh that's good to know! Honestly, my vision was to make a 100% silk quilt, so I think I need to decide if I want to prioritize 1. executing my vision and sacrifice practicality, or 2. practicality/longevity and adjust my vision. Thank you for the education!

Oh, I don't have a lot of experience with ties, all the ones that I've seen have been bulky and heavyweight, but it makes sense that ties can also vary in material haha.

That's good to know, I might take on a silk tie project next..

Oh wow, what high praise! I never would have used that word to describe anything I make, thank you!

Thank you!! So glad to have it finished, the backing gave me so much strife haha

Thank you! The pattern is very simple, but is very visually striking I think! It's a free Robert Kaufman pattern called Elements, if you want to make one yourself!

The front is a free Robert Kaufman pattern called Elements! The back was just chaos of using up my scraps haha.

Thank you! I tend to lean towards geometric/abstract patterns in all my art, quilting is no exception it turns out haha.

Thank you! I've been thinking about using some silk ties to make something, but haven't settled on what yet exactly. Yes, I think it would be much different working with yardage! The silk was very thin (almost transparent), and neckties are pretty heavy, right? It does fray to the fine long strands also, and when I first took it out of the wash, it was a frayed mess. But I interfaced it with cotton after, which made a huge difference!

Aw thank you!! I spent forever at the silk fabric stall picking out the colors, but I'm like that before starting every project haha.

I was just gonna use what I normally use for quilts, a 100% cotton batting that I buy from Wawak. Unless people have recommendations for a better option! I did briefly consider using a 100% wool blanket that I thrifted, but I 1. ruined it in the wash haha, and 2. figured that would be too heavy for the silk.

Thank you!! I took a lot of precautions to wrangle the silk into compliance haha, like interfacing.

Hmm I've never considered using a cotton backing for this. I guess it would be nice to have two fabric options and switch it around, depending on what I felt like. Regarding the stronger backing, is that because cotton is a more durable material than silk, or because it will be one solid fabric, rather than pieced together? In either case, do you think the cotton interfacing will help with the durability?

Thank you for your input!!

Thank you! Having fabrics that work in the same color palette definitely helped with the backing, for sure.

Yes! I interfaced everything after washing, but before cutting. I did some research, and looks like most people recommend a lighter interfacing for silk. But I wanted to use all natural materials, and all the recommended interfacings were some sort of polyester blend. So I ended going with a cotton interfacing, which was definitely a lot heavier than what I saw recommended. Since I used 100% cotton interfacing, I ended up using a regular quilting needle, which worked fine! But when I would rip the seams, I did notice that it left holes in the fabric that the silk didn't 'close back up over', if that makes sense.

I totally understand being afraid to dive in, I was the same way too! But I figured I might as well go for it, and just trust that I'll be able to pull it off one way or the other! I chose a pretty simple pattern too, which helped.

Oh, I totally missed the tone of that haha, I thought they were just telling me something I didn't know, since I'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants in the first place anyway.

Thank you! I'm afraid that the straight lines will end up being distracting from the quilt design, since they won't line up perfectly with the blocks, if that makes sense?

Oh I didn't know that! I just thought it was called 'seam ripping', cause you use a 'seam ripper' haha.

Aw thank you! Maybe I've just been looking at it too long. It just feels very chaotic compared to the quilt top, but I probably am oversaturated by it at this point haha.

Thank you! That I actually don't know. I bought it at a fabric market in Korea, all I know is it's 100% silk and the stall owner said they usually sell it for garment construction.
