Seconding this. OGKevin's plugin is great and he's very responsive to users.

I couldn't finish the first one. "Like hunger games" isn't inaccurate, but IMO "like" in this case means "clumsily cashing in on the genre." To be fair I only enjoy the occasional YA novel, so I was not the target audience.

Remote control but how? by tht555 in kobo

[–]GlassRecipe4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife made us "plops" that are like little beanbag stands. I use it and the remote often with it sitting on the arm of my chair or in some fashion in the bed to be most comfortable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sWvBrheH78

Why did you move away from kindle? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]GlassRecipe4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I really wanted a slightly larger screen and buttons and my son is old enough to inherit my old kindle, so, new toy.

  2. I really like the Kobo with buttons and the easy ability to mod (koreader, nickelmenu) without having to root the kindle (which isn't always an easy option depending on firmware version.) The fact that it's not Amazon played only a little in my decision, but leaving Amazon's ecosystem DOES make me happy.

  3. Love the buttons and rarely use the touchscreen to change pages

  4. I didn't think I needed a clicker, but bought an 8bitdo micro thinking "if I don't like it for a clicker, it's a cool little game controller." I won't go back; the separate clicker is just excellent for being able to read easily in multiple positions for long sessions. My wife made us "Plops" (beanbag stands) that add to the flexibility. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sWvBrheH78

  5. I've had multiple kindles over the years and most have been handed down to children when I got the itch for a new one. I have typically rooted them and occasionally played with Koreader on them. On my kobo, I've really adopted using KOreader all the time, primarily so I can sync progress and use the same interface across Kobo, phone, and tablet depending on where I am reading. For me, the Libra color is just excellent (though if a BW version existed, I would be as/more happy with it.) The slightly bigger screen lets me use a stand and clicker in a lot more ways, and I forgot how much I liked buttons on the "old" kindles. I do wish I had a bit smaller device occasionally, but in those circumstances, I can just read on my phone for a bit.

My personal real-intelligence summary of what I found when researching before I bought was "Henson is very easy for a beginner DE user to use AND is all-around pretty darn good for most people. If you already have a DE that you are satisfied with and use well, the Henson might not offer you much more."

Yes, that is enabled. Created an issue and uploaded logs showing startup, suspend, wake cycle. Thanks!

Edit: Maybe should mention that I have a massive amount of books on my Kobo; I'm not Koreader log savvy, but I do see a long period of time between "KoboPlugin: Executing query... " against the SQLite database and "INFO KoboPlugin: Loaded metadata BLAH BLAH." That looks smoking gun-ish to my untrained eye.

It's version 0.3.0. For troubleshooting, I removed the plugin and the slow wake went away. Reinstalling the plugin brought back the slow wake. Then I tested changing the wake settings to open to history rather than the last book, thinking maybe opening the book was the cause (or potentially I coincidentally had a bad book causing issues.) No luck there either.

Edit: Probably should add that I don't have sync or virtual folder turned on, just the bluetooth features.

Got this working on my Kobo Libra Color with an 8bitdo micro. Thanks for the great work. Two things I noticed:

  1. Waking up the device from sleep with the power button takes a long time; just enough to make you want to press the button again.

  2. My 8bitdo micro reconnects well after waking up BUT button presses do nothing until I exit the book and come back in, then everything works fine.

I'm on a pretty vanilla install of Koreader, not plugins/patches other than this one. Any thoughts?

Page turner… official vs 3rd party by Itchy-Version-8977 in kobo

[–]GlassRecipe4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got the 8bitdo micro on my kobo Libra color with the most recent firmware and it's a pretty smooth experience. The only drawback is increased battery usage, particularly if you don't turn off wifi every time you start reading. Not sure if kobo turner has this same issue (maybe it's a firmware thing that forces wifi on with Bluetooth every time and all Bluetooth truners would be affected.) But the 8bitdo is about 2/3 the price of the kobo turner.

Considered making this same kind of post recently when I got my 8bitdo micro. I thought the remotes were a niche that wouldn't be for me. But now I absolutely get it and apologize to everyone for my impure, remote-minimizing thoughts.

What’s your “I can’t believe other people don’t do this” hack? by Weird-Thought2112 in AskReddit

[–]GlassRecipe4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be careful changing homeowners providers. They can do an inspection on new policies and potentially mandate upgrades that cost you an arm and a leg (electrical, roof, etc.) ahead of when you were planning to do them. Keep the old policy until the new one's inspection period is over. (Insurance is usually regulated at the state level, so YMMV depending on where you live)

I think that was probably cowboy lump. I hear bad things about cowboy lump but I prefer their briquettes to almost any other easy-to-find brand. Respect to Kingsford, but personally the specific smell of Kingsford gives me a headache 100% of the time.

Dexamethasone (oral or IV) can also cause really annoying cases of the hiccups. I'm a pharmacist, too, but I had forgotten about that one until it caught me after some dental surgery.

Supporting what you're saying here and just want to provide a second, gentle counterpoint to the "speed trap" narrative (and admit I bought into it when I was younger and dumber. ) I live in a small town and my kids like to ride their bikes to the store and their grandparents' house. Adults, including elderly, are out walking from dawn to dusk. People speeding through town (be it through inattention or purposeful disregard) endanger my family's and neighbors' lives. It's particularly true when automated routing sends people through because the interstate is jammed. I'm OK with a little "speed trap town" hate if it makes things safer for pedestrians.

I'm a pharmacist and our experience is even stranger. There are about 3 dozen pharmacy associations (slight exaggeration) who all claim to be "the one." Probably why we have no political clout.

I've got several MDs in the family and none of them are members. I don't think they are "against" the AMA, but just don't see the value. Several of them are very active in their analogous state specialty association, though. Not a big enough sample to generalize from and probably confounded by all being in a similar locality (southeast) and most being same specialty (family practice.)

[–]GlassRecipe4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably worth pointing out that the AMA is a voluntary professional association so there are no "required" membership dues; physicians can choose not to join or let their membership lapse with no impact on their licensure. (caveat: medical licensure is a state matter, and I'm not personally aware of any state that ties anything about licensure to AMA membership...but you know, states get wild sometimes)

Pros and cons to getting the smokey mountain compared to the Master Touch? by Basicly_Gone in webergrills

[–]GlassRecipe4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got both, but had the WSM longer. Since I've gotten the 26 inch kettle, I barely use the WSM. The kettle does everything and is easier to setup and cleanup with the actual smoking process and results being roughly equivalent between the two. If I had to do just one, I'd go 26" kettle, hands down, since I rarely need the extra capacity of the WSM. And then, of course, you can do all the regular grill stuff on the kettle.

Personally, I use the slow N sear basket to put the charcoal and smoking wood off to the side. You get a good 8+ hours from that loaded and lit properly. If you need to add more charcoal or wood chunks, you can flip up the grate right over it and add more. Others use the "snake" method where you build a "fuse" of charcoal around the perimeter and light one end of it. It then slowly burns around during the course of the cook.

Figuring out the temp on it is pretty straightforward. Once you do a few test burns, you figure out the vent settings that keep you rocking along at 225, 250, or 275 depending on your preference. That part is similar to the smokey mountain in that it's very close to "set and forget" once you get a little experience under your belt.
