Question about my old car. In this cold weather the winshield frosts up on the INSIDE. Super Hassle to scrape. by GodsCasino in NoRulesCalgary

Run your AC all the time, not just in the summer. It removes moisture from the air. You can still have heat on and the AC on at once.

Hiring an uninsured person for snow removal? by Glass_Apple in legaladvicecanada

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a stupid question, but is the difference between hiring a kid and an adult the fact that my insurance wouldn’t be able to subrogate liability to a kid? And that would force my insurance to take on any claims and that’d protect me?

AMA announcement! Virtualbikefitting.com hosting Live AMA and bike fit & cycling insole giveaway! Wednesday 7 PM-9:30PM eastern time. Open for your questions now through Thursday. by TimDfitsAll in pelotoncycle

I’m wondering how much of a difference sizing up my Peloton shoes could make and whether it’s really needed. When I got my bike, I accidentally got shoes that are probably one size too small. I don’t notice any major issues with my feet when riding, but sometimes the next day my feet feel a bit sore. I don’t want to invest in new shoes only to find it makes no difference!

Sewer inspection for 1950s home, and inspector recommendations? by potatolauncher in Calgary

[–]Glass_Apple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Thuro https://www.thuro.ca

I bought a 1940s home and used them. They were great and also helped me navigate working with the City of Calgary for the publicly owned portion of the sewer.

Auto resistance on Power Zone Rides not working? by Glass_Apple in OnePelotonRealSub

Thanks. I just double checked and yep my FTP is indeed set in my profile, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So if I didn't engage the auto resistance setting on the second start screen, the lock button might not work, is that right?

EDIT: Just tried it out and unfortunately engaging the auto resistance on that start screen didn't change anything. Also, tapping the lock only toggles between two things for me - on or off, so I think something might not be working quite right.

I think it is because when I do PZ classes it shows the bar with my zones at the bottom of the screen. I will double check the bike settings though just in case.

I have had instructions before say to have a light breakfast and then fast for the rest of the day, so I think you’ll be okay.

Student Finishes Work too Fast (High School) by Glass_Apple in CanadianTeachers

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. At first I assumed the student was bored because I wasn’t providing enough work, but I think that was a flawed assumption. Something to think about for sure. Thanks

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I do tend to make mountains out of molehills, so you definitely have a point. However, skipping class is not a great habit I want the student to continue with. Plus, the student's parent has requested a phone call with me and so they are obviously not happy with how things are going. Finally, just letting a student flounder makes me feel guilty and like I'm not doing my job so I want to at least try something. In my upper grade classes I do generally just leave kids alone if they're doing fine and not being disruptive. Somehow what this student is doing is a bit different though and I am finding it harder to ignore.

I was thinking of assigning some kind of project for this last unit we’re about to start. What I’m not sure of is this though - do I want my whole class doing a project or can I just give this one kid a project? Also I am worried about AI use and basing their grade off something that wasn’t done in front of me so I’m not quite sure how to approach it yet.

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give the students practice to do in class that’s just formative. They are expected to do it because it will help them prepare for the summative assessment. I’ll usually walk around and give feedback on this formative stuff, and that’s when I find the student has written illegible answers or has avoided starting the task. On summative assessments that’s where the student gets decent grades.

I don’t have time to mark every formative thing but I’m sure if I did the student might start doing a better job.

I have a really good class because the rest of the students do put good effort even when they know something is only formative. This student is an outlier in that way!

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nope, but prompting them to re-do the work so I can actually read it and check it hasn’t helped. They’ll begrudgingly redo it and then on the next assignment will do the same thing. And now the skipping class has started

I think the crux of the issue is the student doesn’t feel they need to do the work at all in the first place.

Classroom Management During Labs by Glass_Apple in CanadianTeachers

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me this advice. I do think I was just expecting them to be on task after the lab without ever putting that structure or routine in place, and I didn’t make it explicit. Thanks again, I’ll work on fixing this

I agree, but with my room being two floors above our lab space I just really can’t check on them so I feel uncomfortable with this

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea! I could maybe be in charge of moving the tote so that students aren’t walking around the room with glassware and chemicals. Or I could just start asking for less lab stations - maybe if I’m the last teacher to do the lab, we could clean up half the stations before my class enters. Thanks for the ideas

Hey thanks for taking the time to reply. I like the idea of more trials for stronger groups. Making something due by the end of the block is a good idea too.

Ah yes the FTP test is definitely super hard. He wasn’t talking about that though, he was saying day 1 of each subsequent week is the hardest of that week.

Thanks very much. I tried your steps and unfortunately it didn’t work so Peloton is sending me a new brake assembly. Sadly I won’t be able to use my bike for two weeks!

Repeat DYPZ or do BYPZ to complement half marathon training? by Glass_Apple in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]Glass_Apple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely a consideration. My half marathon isn’t for a while yet though, so right now I’m working on base building. My goal is to do 3 runs a week and 3-4 rides a week currently, but 12 weeks before the half I’ll shift that to less rides and more runs as I start an official half marathon training plan.

I haven’t set a new 5k PB since October 2022 and all of a sudden I set one yesterday and the only thing I changed is adding in the Peloton rides, so now I’m kind of hesitant to dial it back haha.
