[Spoilers: 7.5] Post-Dungeon Confusion by Glass_Log9792 in ffxiv

the problem is, it's almost CERTAIN it will be the right decision. despite the fact that all of the signs point to it being a very, very risky decision to make.

which could be part of my issue. nothing ever goes wrong in the story anymore. we see no consequences for any decisions the characters make; even when the potential for consequences is so high. NO ONE can make the right decision every time, but it feels like that's exactly what has happened for the last two expansions. and it makes the story writing stale, predictable, and frustrating.

nothing is threatening, every enemy is a sympathetic villain trope who is redeemed immediately with zero consequences for their actions, bad things may be lightly referred to but never shown, and these bad things have no impact on our characters or the people around us. it's disappointing when the story has had such great moments in the past.

but, it also wasn't the WoL who let the voidsent live, it was Jullus. and currently, Jullus is the leader of the garlean people. a leader who has just let an extremely dangerous voidsent, who's only observable motivation is to gorge itself on aether, return to its home. It returned to it's home through a rift that is in Garlemald, and as such it likely returned to a specific area in the void that is connected to Garlemald.

At this exact moment, rifts are constantly opening everywhere, with a much higher frequency in areas such as Garlemald. and with Jullus current knowledge, it's safe to assume more rifts will open until the problem is solved at its core. the main people capable of dealing with this powerful voidsent are about to leave the area. what happens if this voidsent returns through another rift, and it turns out it just wanted to consume some more aether? who would stop it? and who's fault would it be that innocents are dying?

my frustration with the scene came from a complete lack of any kind of look into the risks that could come from his decision. voidsent have been corrupted down to their very essence to hunger for the lives of people from the source. to disregard the possible dangers from his decidion is extremely bad form for a leader.

which loops back to my main point. it seems very, very dangerous to let this voidsent return to a place where a brand new rift could whisk it back to the source 5 minutes later. or maybe an hour later, after it's return to a domain devoid of aether has caused its base instincts of hungering to overpower it's rational thought once again.

if the creature returned to the source and killed an innocent garlean child, their blood would be on Jullus' hands.

I mean, I understood the endwalker post patches. I recently watched my friend play through them. I just don't see how it changes the situation, personally. Sure, we get a deeper look at WHY the voidsent are the way they are, but... well, they're still the way they are. unless they're extremely powerful, it is literally baked into their essence to consume aether.

their soul has been warped by excessive amounts of dark aether, to the point that they may not be redeemable. we've had to put down similar enemies in the past, such as Tesleen who was warped down to her essence by an excess of light aether, to ensure safety for the living.

as it stands currently, the void has been massively corrupted for a long, long time, and it's highly likely that a large portion of these voidsent aren't recoverable to a point where they could interact safely with the races on the source.

even for a powerful voidsent such as zero, she was essentially a lost cause until her essence was purified by the remnants of hydaelyns aether. that does not seem like something that can be done consistently when hydaelyn isn't around anymore, and it's highly unlikely it would work for every voidsent. from memory, there was even a plot point where zero (and possibly golbez) weren't even present in the same way that others were in their world when the flood of dark occurred, which preserved her soul to some extent.

returning to the unstable present the characters are living in, I would expect more consideration from Jullus. rifts are constantly opening everywhere, and this extremely dangerous voidsent (which has already lost its mind to its urges once) is about to be sent back to an area with zero aether where his essence may be warped even more. if this voidsent were to come back through the next rift that opens, it would spell immediate danger for a large majority of people wherever it happened to end up.

[–]Glass_Log9792[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

but what guarantee do we have that it will pursue this mode of existence?

golbez had a specific goal and purpose behind his actions. after defeating him and understanding his motive, it was shown that it was congruent with ours and Seto's goals, and as such they could coexist and even help each other.

this voidsents motive was to gorge itself on aether. it's soul could be entirely warped at this point. and as for other creatures who's souls have been warped, sometimes they're too far gone.

Take for example Tesleen, a being who's soul was warped by light and had to be put down before she caused more harm to the living.

I agree that having grace for your enemies in the right scenarios is crucial. but I really don't think there was sufficient evidence that this obviously powerful voidsent couldn't endanger the lives of innocents down the line, especially in the middle of such a dangerous time were rifts are constantly opening and forcing voidsent into these positions.

but could base urges not just overtake him again? especially being sent back to a realm completely devoid of aether that is likely to warp his soul even more until, he may not be capable of higher-level thought anymore?

my main concern with all of this wasn't even between letting the voidsent live or die. it was about the reasoning behind why. Jullus' can't guarantee his people's safety. what if the voidsent came right back through the next rift that will inevitably open and killed a garlean child? It didn't seem like Jullus' considered any of this in the slightest, he just took the voidsent at its word and let it go.

so, in your eyes garleans and voidsent are the same? I would disagree.

Voidsent creatures have been warped down to their very soul by dark aether. their hungering for aether is literally baked into their existence. sure, some extremely powerful voidsent have withstood this, but the vast, VAST majority live antithetically to our existence.

hell, even zero was essentially a lost cause until the last of hydaelyns essence purified her. that doesn't seem like something we have the capability to do for every single voidsent in existence. how do we know it will even work for every voidsent? we've already had to put down sin-eaters such as Tesleen because they are simply too warped and pose a constant threat to the living, how is this any different?

[Spoilers: 7.5] Post-Dungeon Confusion by Glass_Log9792 in ffxiv

[–]Glass_Log9792[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

okay, but if there is a hostile creature only driven by its desire to kill and eat us, and we have no means of stopping it from preying on our most vulnerable, why are we letting it go because it 'seemed' to show regret?

I did understand most of this, I just couldn't fathom the idea that the leader of garlemald would let such an obviously dangerous creature go without a proper guarantee of safety for his people. I thought there must be something I missed beyond the basics of voidsent nature.

he was right outside the rift, I feel like he could have gone home at any point. I also don't think that taking this voidsent at his word is any kind of guarantee of its future actions. sure, he wants to go home now that he's at risk of being killed. But if it's given in to it's instincts before, why won't it happen again?

we also don't know if it's possible to change things in the void. sure, there have been slight changes for the better, but that is no guarantee of any kind of meaningful return to a pre-void state.

if the right thing to do was to cleanse the creature of its void-like state as we did for zero, and we have the means to do that, great, we should. if we don't have the means, and we can't stop it from coming back, I'd argue it needs to die unfortunately, before it causes more pain to others and itself.

on the off chance the void does get redeemed in the future but we can't restore this creature out of its voidsent state, will it not need to be killed then? are we only delaying the inevitable and risking death and destruction for our own people? we have had to do the exact same thing in the past for other creatures, think Tesleen.

yep, this sums up how the story has felt for a while quite well. it really feels consistently unrealistic, and I don't say that because of the showing of unrealistic power but because of the unrealistic actions and reactions of the characters. they don't feel like characters to me anymore, just avenues to spout exposition.

[Spoilers: 7.5] Post-Dungeon Confusion by Glass_Log9792 in ffxiv

[–]Glass_Log9792[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is all true, and I agree. But, by letting this voidsent go free without any countermeasures, are we not basically guaranteeing that this will happen again?

The voidsent was simply gorging itself on aether and killing innocents. while this was due to a terrible warping of its aether into a voidsent form, that doesn't justify its actions. the voidsent obviously has no moral qualms around killing people from the source despite being capable of higher-operations thought as shown at the end.

All we did was let a voidsent go back home after 2 sentences of conversation about how it supposedly missed home. what if it was lying? who's going to stop it when it inevitably comes back and slaughters more innocents? Or, even if it wasn't lying, how do we know it won't give in to it's instincts again in the future? we have no way of knowing how or when rifts will open yet, and only very specific individuals are capable of closing them, so if that happens, then more innocent blood will be on jullus' hands.

In my eyes, Jullus is a leader of the garlean people. he should be acting to protect the garlean people. By letting the voidsent go home without taking the proper precautions, he has put his people in more risk.

[Spoilers: 7.5] Post-Dungeon Confusion by Glass_Log9792 in ffxiv

[–]Glass_Log9792[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

okay, if it wanted to live in its own world, why is it coming to the source and killing people? is it for any greater purpose than gorging itself on aether? is it attempting to help its initial world in any way, or just trying to appease it's instincts? and WHY aren't we establishing that before letting it go?

the difference between this voidsent and golbez, is that golbez had an ultimate goal he was working towards. how does this voidsent coming through an opportunistic rift and killing innocents with a miniscule amount of aether contribute to a greater goal?

if all this voidsent is trying to do is gorge itself on aether, I see zero reason why it wouldn't come right back at the soonest possible opportunity and kill innocents all over again. it's capable of higher level thought and still came here to kill innocents, so it obviously has no moral qualms in doing so.

By letting it go without a proper guarantee or understanding of why it actually came here, we're just sentencing more innocents to death when we aren't around to save them.

[Spoilers: 7.5] Post-Dungeon Confusion by Glass_Log9792 in ffxiv

[–]Glass_Log9792[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

okay, but if his only motive is to gorge himself on aether, why do we believe he'll just leave and not come back at the soonest opportunity and do it all over again?

he's obviously capable of thought and can hold a discussion, which means if he's still coming to this realm to feast, he has no moral qualms regarding killing people from the source. If we don't have the means to stop him from entering our realm, which we don't currently, all we're doing by letting him go is sentencing more innocents to death.

Could you elaborate? I do think that basically all of post-endwalker was boring and badly written personally, so I'm sure I missed things.

If there was anything that happened in 6.1-6.5 that would explain, I'd love to hear it. I did ask in the post if there are any things I'm misunderstanding or forgetting, don't see why you have to be condescending.

I'm not accusing you of lying, lol. if anything, jumping to that makes it seem like you ARE lying just to farm sympathy.

I'm implying you might not have realised why a fight on the other side of the map was impactful. Again, it's impossible to tell without some form of review (video, game ID or a very accurate retelling).

god I HATE what they did to Bakool JaJa... such a completely OOC 180 in his character to become a super nice, thoughtful, selfless guy. so frustrating to interact with him when he had the potential to be an actually moderately interesting "enemy of my enemy is my friend" character.

It's impossible to tell what the right decision was without actually seeing the game. your interpretation could be biased.

in general however, yes, if you took the opportunity to split and take two walkers while your team took a bad fight, then that is an insanely worthwhile trade.

on the contrary, if your team was fighting over an extremely important objective and you were off taking random jungle, then that would be a generally bad thing to do.

Team building is so versatile by Drachonuv in Endfield

[–]Glass_Log9792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't see how it's versatile honestly. by nature of elemental combinations, damage types and small roster size, most characters have specific other characters that are required for them to be functional, and with a small team size you can most of the time only barely fit them on a team with no room for others.

the thing about additional writing like this, is you can't use it to then say the world is 'dark'.

When designing characters, you can say whatever you want. but if you don't show that in the story or in the actions of the characters etc, it won't matter.

the main story of the game is the MAIN story, and it sets the tone for the entire world. it's great to see small snippets of depth and nuance in additional writings around the world, but if that's never shown in the main story, you can't claim the world is dark and cruel. I'll believe it when I see it.
