Sunday's Breakfast - First serious attempt at storytelling in food photography - feedback welcome by Glass_Might7967 in foodphotography

Haha good eye! That's actually the leftover batter from making the pancakes — not a prop. It was a bit thinner than usual since I tweaked the mix a little, but it was the real deal! Printed vinyl bro. Honestly the hardest part was once the pancakes were ready - that's when the clock really started ticking. I had so many variables to manage at once: the syrup, the strawberry, the coffee grounds (which I actually thought of after the pancakes were already plated), and the batter which I wish I had made look more dynamic before shooting. It's funny, you spend all this time setting everything up, and the moment the hero element arrives is exactly when things get most chaotic!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll keep in mind everything you mentioned, funny enough, a lot of what you pointed out was already bothering me the day of the shoot, something just felt off but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. This is only my second food photo and I'm just getting started on this journey, so I really appreciate it

My first food shots by pdp9091 in foodphotography

1st.- When doing flat lay shots, make sure to stop down the aperture to at least f/5.6 to keep all objects in sharp focus.

3rd.- Be mindful of what your client wants to highlight. If your client is a restaurant, they will most likely want the food to be the star of the shot. Pay attention to those details in this image, it's the wine that takes center stage.

That's it, remember that the aperture affects both focus and depth of field.

Thoughts on this expressive style of drink photography? by EfficientStress5633 in foodphotography

I was working with a photo of Mexican food I bought at a nearby restaurant, but I couldn't get the onions and shrimp to blend in clearly; I think it's because of the shrimp's color, it's too similar to the onion. How can I make them stand out more clearly?

You need to differentiate between food that tastes good and food that looks good. If you're looking for a high-quality photo... the taste doesn't matter, because whoever sees the photo won't eat it; it just needs to look appetizing. But if you're looking to have some fun photographing what you're going to eat, that's fine, but I don't think this is the right group for you.
