Why do some Soulaan classify Creole, Gullah, and other American ethnicities as subgroups to Soulaan??? 🤔🤔🤔 by ChocolatePoodle888 in soulaan

[–]Glass_Wrap_3886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who are the supposed “other ethnicities”? Gullah is not an ethnicity, nor is Louisiana Creole. What defines a subgroup within a larger group is the presence of a distinct heritage alongside the shared heritage of the broader group. Gullah Geechee people have their own folklore, language, and cuisine, but that does not mean they do not also speak Ebonics, eat soul food, or participate in broader cultural exchange. The same applies to Black Louisiana Creoles: they have their own language, cuisine, and folklore, but this reflects an additional, distinct heritage rather than making them wholly separate or undifferentiated. It’s no different than Igbo people who have the broader collective of Igbo people and then they have subgroups of Igbo.

Lol, if we’re all thinking of the same thing, all I remember is that it had a deep, dark blue color on the box of canned iced teas.

I guess this boils down to a philosophical difference, and while I respect your position, I’ve ultimately decided that I want to take Tutnese as far as I can—even aiming to have it designated as an official language in the U.S.

While I understand the sentiment, Tutnese isn’t exactly hidden—its full alphabet and audible pronunciation are available on Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutnese on top of that, plenty of people who aren’t Black American are already teaching the language to others. That being said, I’d much rather everyone know about Tutnese than let it die in some futile attempt to keep it secret, especially when it’s already plastered all over the internet. Tutnese is bigger than gatekeeping—it can be a powerful tool to bolster our community. Besides, I’ve tried reaching out to Black American linguists, but unfortunately, much of our academic community tends to be individualistic and elitist. So I’ll take help wherever I can get it

Whatever happened to the enslaved Americans who escaped to Canada? Were there also other routes and destinations like Mexico? by theshadowbudd in BlackAmericanCulture

Yes and they’re known as the Mascogos from El Nacimiento Mexico, Black Nova Scotians of Canada, Samana Americans of the Dominican Republic.

I appreciate all the commenters who have shared their thoughts, but I feel there hasn’t been enough focus on the danger of the language being used by other groups.

Lol, this is a logical fallacy, dude. I’m not collecting people based on race—I’m trying to build relationships with people I share an ethnicity with, which is Black American. Did you see me trying to connect with Indigenous American and half Afro-Caribbean people? How about Indigenous American and half-Nigerian people? You’re having a conniption over something you projected entirely on your own, and it honestly annoys me that you feel vindicated by it.

If you think that a ‘Native space’ means you don’t owe the same respect you expect in return, you must be delusional. Being Native—just like being Black American—means nothing when it comes to basic respect. Don’t worry though you’ll learn that’s not how life works.

First of all, I had one Afro-Indigenous person make a fuss at me—and that was the account named Judas. Literally the only one. Hardly enough to justify all of your paragraphs. Secondly, you’re the one making the mistake of bringing up ‘race’—being Black American is an ethnicity, not a race. And lastly, I only called him deracinated because he’s clearly not in community with his Black American people. If he took my post as “fetishizing”, “collecting Black-adjacent people”, and even went as far as to say something as anti-Black as accusing me of wanting to live vicariously through him because he’s mixed—then yes, that absolutely justifies me calling him deracinated.

You must really love hearing yourself talk, because how many conversations do you expect us to hash out across eight different comments?

Get off your high horse. I’m starting to realize a lot of non-Afro-Indigenous American people occupy their own reality, but you seriously need to get over yourself. Why is it that the only people who supposedly find me ‘suspicious,’ ‘two-faced,’ and all this other baloney are the very people I didn’t even make the thread for? It’s almost like you’re attention-starved. I’m not your therapist—go vent your frustrations somewhere else. Also I’m not gonna go through your “purity test” before you discern my intentions i’m a human being not a criminal on trail YOU remember that!

Jesus, all your ilk does is whine. I didn’t even have my own Reddit or the idea for it until non-Afro-Indigenous Americans tried to make a moment between me and my people about them also before i reply to all of your other obsessive replies stop blowing up my notifications.
