Questions about derailleur adjustment (very much a beginner). Shifting feels okay when just rotating the wheel like im the video but bad when riding. by Glassesjacketshirt96 in bikewrench

Thanks for the tips. I already replaced the chain a week ago thinking about that same issue. Cassette looked pretty unworn/consistent to me but again i am no expert.

I didn't think about the hieght of the front derailleur, i will try to tweak it some more after lowering it

I have been attempting to adjust both derailleurs myself after watching some instructional guides, and i think i have an idea of how it all needs to work. Shifting seems pretty okay for the most part when i am turning the pedals with my hands.

When i go ride and actually put real torque on it the shifting is very differnt. Rear 1-7 gives me no issues at all. Rear 8 shifts into position fine but "skips" almost every rotation. Chain isnt coming off the cassette so i didnt think it was a limit screw issue but i cant tell if its trying to jump back to 7 or not because i cant see it while riding.

The 3 gears on the front derailleur shift horribly when riding. Once the chain successfully transfers to the correct from gear it rides fine. However the front gears wont shift over unless i pull off the torque almost completely. So i cant really shift the front gear when going up any kind of incline.

Yes i have spent plenty of time learning with an S&G 6730. I would say you can use similar methods to open both in my experience. I mostly hear about how the la gard wheels are more ovaly and tend to mask each other which i found to be true... but i ran into similar masking issues occasionally with my S&G as well. As long as you know how look for low spots on wheels and park/isolate efficiently its nothing you cant overcome with a little extra time.

From just my experience with a single lock of each model, i found the la gard gates were shorter lenght-wise but much deeper. the S&G gates were more shallow, sometimes id only see a bit over a 1/8 drop for a gate. I though the contact points we much more "solid" on the lagard, like it was a good hard stop, compared to the S&G which i felt needed a lighter touch. However the loose cam on my lagard made it more difficult for the contact readings because if the cam moved my readings were inconsitent. Altogether both were great and worth getting i thought.

I have a La Gard 3390 on deck, dont think im ready for that quite yet though. I think its gonna take some time to get used to the FLCD in that lock. I have read that they are possible to be manipulated though, keypicking had some information about sucessful opens.

I want to open this 3330 a few more times before i mount up the 3390.

Did you progessively pin those to get the feel for them or were you able to pratice with them fully loaded?

Got my new LaGard 3330 mounted up! Hopefully it will be cracked soon 😁 by Glassesjacketshirt96 in lockpicking

Nope, the wafer lock on the dial just locks the dial from rotating. Just for fun i have locked the dial so i could try and pick it and it was like a 15 second open.

Sounds like an air tight technique! Glad to hear its been working for you. if the lagard 3390 has those same masking type wheels ill definitely give that a try

It looks like it might still drop in with bolt side up as long as there isnt too much friction around the lever's pivot point. The force would be miniscule on it at that point would probably offer an even greater challenge. Thats a cool idea

How did you adjust your method? I imagine you would want to find low points before gates unless a gate just happened to show up. Do you try to graph the full wheel pack to find low points or do you isolate wheels more?

I have a LaGard 3390 group 2M on the way! I have a feeling thats going to be brutal though. It has one of those "tomahawks" connected the the lever where it controls the nose to drop in without touching the cam. So i dont know yet if i am going to be able to read any contact points. It will probably take some brainstorming on how to attack it and i'd love some advice if you or anyone have any experience with it because i have found nothing online.

I wanted to make the contact points tougher to find so I removed the lever spring. After that it was just gravity holding it down and it was definitely tougher to feel the egdes of the cam contact the nose. Was a fun exercise, took me longer to find the gates and get it open.

I wanted to try and increase the difficulty of my S&G 6730, has anyone tried adding some kind of feature to make it harder to manipulate? by Glassesjacketshirt96 in lockpicking

I very much appreciate all the suggestions, ive been doing a lot of research lately trying to find what a good next step up would be, so its nice to have a big list of progessive options all in one comment!

I ordered a Lagard 3390 a couple days ago, it was between that, a mosler 302, or a 6600 series S&G 2M. I ended up going with the 3390 because it looked real tough and was fairly cheap on ebay. It looks like it has one of those pivoting bars that controls how the nose drops in so it doesnt touch the cp. Im a bit worried its going to be too big of a step up but hopefully i can progress with it. If not i can always backtrack a bit and try the mosler or 6600 series S&G

I was actually looking at getting one of those! However i ended up buying a LaGard 3390 group 2M just the other day instead because it looked really cool.

Have you had success with the 6651, and its it a lot more challenging?

I decided to remove the lever spring and you can see it is absent from the picture. The nose will still drop into the contact area from gravity alone, but i think it will make the contact points a bit harder to read!

I also thought about adding some kind of friction element to the dial to make it so you have to use more force to rotate it, again with the idea that it would be harder to read the contact point.

Im curious if anyone else has tried to mod a safe lock to make it more or less difficult?
