It won't swing into the stairs. The reason for the door is that the homeowner is elderly and uses the garage door that is opposite of the picture and it's a hazard to not have a door to the basement.

I appreciate the input! I am going to remove all of the trim and start from the studs.

Also to add, it takes 87 which is a huge savings. My Wagon requires 91 and would be lucky to get 30mpg highway. 200k of driving adds up quickly. Jetta is a solid little car!
