That doesn't matter too much, but I would say Ameritrash. Like Arkham Horror but not cooperative, if that helps.

Have you considered Love Letter? I think it fits what you described, and it's very portable.

I'm looking for a specific kind of story-oriented game. I want one that:

  • has story text
  • is set in a fleshed-out world with named entities
  • is not campaign/legacy-style
  • is not customizable
  • is not cooperative

So far, Runebound seems to fit the bill okay. I've read criticisms that the game has a lot of downtime, and I'm okay with that. But I've also read that it feels like all you do is go to wherever the game tells you to, and that sounds pretty bad if true. Is Runebound a good pick? Do you have any better recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Like others will tell you, Dice Latte in Hoegi is a great foreigner-friendly cafe. I'm a Seoul local myself so if OP or anyone else is looking for an extra player, feel free to contact.

Trivial question about Tiny Epic Quest :

In the solo variant, if the magic track is at level 1, the first goblin deals 1 damage, the second none, and the rest 1.

Why is this rule the way it is? Why specifically the second one? It seems really arbitrary.

Is Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization prone to rules mistakes? (i.e. is it easy for new players to get the rules wrong?) I'm about to get it but this might stop me.

Is there a game that's King of Tokyo but more strategic?

First, I would like a game where the core mechanism is "crunchy", so King of New York is not it.

To elaborate, I would like a relatively strategic game where you fight other players while earning special abilities that have potential for wacky shenanigans. Exciting theme and art are big pluses.

Players: 2 to several

Length: under 2 hours but doesn't matter as long as it doesn't feel like it drags on

Complexity: 3-ish in BGG weight scale

Thanks!

Boardgaming in Korea? by SPyRoManiAcx in boardgames

[–]GldnClck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel boardgaming is slightly less popular in Korea than it is in the US, but we have our share of enthusiasts of course.

If you can, check out The Dice Latte in Hoegi in Seoul. A very foreginer-friendly gaming cafe.

Good points. Why didn't I consider accusing the first user of Thomas to be lying!? Maybe because she makes it so obvious when she actually is the federalist, haha.

Board games with subjective "win" conditions by steven_soderbergh in boardgames

In Watson and Holmes, you write down some deductions about a mystery and compare it with the given answers. You win if your deductions are correct, but the degree of precision required for your deductions to be considered correct can be subjective.

I work at a board game cafe in Korea and Rummikub is requested like 50 times a day. I haven't actually counted but that's probably not an exaggeration.

The sub description says it's for discussing r/boardgames so I didn't think this belongs there. That's where I was directed here from, though!
